Tony Northrup brings you the latest photography & camera industry news. This week, he's covering the law that US President Biden just signed that will shut down TikTok in the US if they don't end their Chinese ownership. He speculates what will happen, including legal challenges and delay tactics, rather than actually selling to a US-owned entity.
Next, he talks about the US threat to allowing the import and use of Chinese DJI drones. Will it happen, or will DJI also be able to avoid shut down?
Finally, Tony covers two leaked cameras: a Panasonic Lumix full-frame fixed-lens camera that will take on the Leica Q3-series of cameras. He speculates about the possible price, lens, megapixels, and more. Then he updates the leaked information about the upcoming Fujifilm GFX100S II, including the price.

The concerns about TikTok influencing voters could easily be said in other countries about U.S based social media.
Should Germany, Turkey, Hungary, Japan, Russia, Azerbaijan etc. all demand that RUclips/Facebook/Instagram/Twitter(X)/LinkedIn/Pintrest shut down or are split into wholly nationalised companies in each country?
yes
We have a big Propaganda Problem with TikTok here in Germany, a lot of N and Islamist stuff here.
@@Dummmmmmdiduummyes, we need to fix the euro propaganda stuff in Africa too: block some propaganda radio stations and websites etc. Let us all live in our bubbles, ja!
The US government does not order social media companies to take down any posts which make the US look poorly. The US government does not force companies to give up 20% of shares to 5 random people belonging to the ruling party. It can be easily said, but it would be easily wrong.
@@Carthodon True, U.S social media censors well without government interference even. And they certainly affect elections by their policies of what can be said and what can't be said.
I am thinking that if Lumix wants to compete directly against the X100vi they will need to keep the price close to that of the X100vi i.e. $2,000,00 or less. I suspect the potential market for this kind of camera is, on average, more interested in the looks and ergonomics of the camera than they are in APSC vs Full frame. Also, if they stray too far from the price of a premium cell phone they will limit the market to professionals and serious camera enthusiasts with deep pockets rather than luring some people from the cell phone camera using demographic. Profits from this type of "standalone" camera are entirely based on camera sales (volume sold) , unlike ILC-s where potential secondary profit from lens sales is a factor.
Good point. Although if they wanted to reach out to the majority of customers then why go full frame? The bigger the sensor, the bigger the cost. But you are right about luring people from the cell phone camera using demographics.
@@Ydkoll I think Lumix is going full frame because there is a segment of the potential market which will be swayed by it (people who already have ILC-s and have been bombarded by marketing on social media pushing full frame). Similar to the marketing "megapixel wars" some years back, there is something of a "sensor size" war going on now. Remember when Sony launched the NEX line of mirrorless cameras, the main thrust of their marketing was that that APS-C sensor was big compared to other consumer cameras ? If the price remains close to the Fuji X100vi, Lumix can make "full frame" a selling point to those wanting to move into the "real camera" realm and increase sales volume. If they price it too high they are limiting the market for it (but will make more money per camera). Time will tell ....
Pana should get their act together and release a new SMALL MFT in the GF1/2, GX1 form factor. No wonder nobody wanted the later models as Pana stripped functions and the click-wheel away... . A b/w version would sell like hot cakes, maybe even more if the sensor would lean into Phase One territory by capturing some of the UV spectrum...
I think it will be cheaper than the s5ii which retails for like $1600-1800 to pit it more as a fixed lens r8 competitor. If they can give you a x100vi full frame for less money and more features, it might drag more people into the brand.
You cannot fight city hall, but you CAN buy it.
There is also something dji is doing to avoid the ban, they are making clones of their drones under a different brand-name, maybe by a company "owned in the us" or something
Yeah, I saw that happening with one of their commercial products, and I started to research it and found it legally complex enough that I wasn't confident it could be a viable strategy for their consumer products.
Audio equivalent of a typo - at 10:16 you passingly describe the Hasselblad X2D 100C as "another full frame camera", in the context of other *medium format* cameras. I looked up the sensor size on bhphoto and it is 43.8 x 33mm, making it a medium format instead of a full frame.
Sorry for mis-speaking, it's definitely a medium format camera.
A first for medium format cameras, the X2D 100C features a built-in 1TB SSD with a write speed up to 2370MB/s, and a read speed up to 2850MB/s.
But there is already report the internal SSD failure with that camera.
@@jliang70 I could only find one time this was reported and it turned out to be the owner's computer having problems,
The biggest problem with built in SSD is bit rot. Unless there is an easy way to replace the SSD at some point, the drive will suffer from bit rot. Of course saving the files to another source will minimize a catastrophic failure.
@@bngr_bngr a decent SSD can last about 10 million write operations,
@@craigbrowne8563 you think they put a decent SSD in this camera? It’s all about cost minimizing each component that goes into a camera. But that many operations probably equal five years. The more pictures that are kept on the SSD the more fragmented the drive becomes. An average consumer might deal with a dozen files per month but a photographer can be creating thousands of files each month.
Definitely excited for the GFX100s ii - the pic quality coming out of that camera is beyond gorgeous.
I'd love a compact FF camera with a collapsible 28-50mm f2.8 or f 3.5 manual zoom, similar to the Contax TVS II.
OMG - Panasonic thinks it has a chance against Fuji in that market? When does a product manager look at the used market prices of the great MFTs like the GM1, GF1/2 and GX1? THOSE were SMALL MFT - nothing comes close... . b/w model too ! Will sell like hot cakes. Even more so if the sensor would have some Phase One tricks like capturing some of the UV spectrum to have more dynamics and being able to have more difference using colour filters. Weather sealing in THAT form factor would be nice too..
I would say that if Fuji could keep up with demand you’d have a point…
Sony RX1Rii
How about a Xiaomi 14 Pro - a 1" sensor camera phone- review or thoughts 🤞
Man I wish Fuji would get sync speed up so you could use it outdoors with flash 😢
Fingers crossed on the Lumix FF compact. I think with the Real Time LUT function in the s5ii/s5iix it gives the options that people love in fuji, with the bonus of adding your favourite looks, either created or bought. I also think, in typical Lumix fashion, it will be a very affordable camera. People have been asking for a new GX/ GM for a while and if its FF, then this will go off the charts. Might also be a zoom, like the LX series, and if it was fixed aperture I think would CRUSH. At least I would love a zoom
So when LUMIX S5ii comes out on sale bundle with 50mm or 85mm f1.8 for around $1650 to $1750 range that is definitely when you go and buy during the sale. It’s one heck of a deal.
I would love a new LUMIX G100 with phase detect. It is such a nice design. I’m a sucker for a central EVF.
I'm very interested in the rumor of a new Sigma 24-70mm zoomlens. I'm planning a big summer holiday and would like to have a versatile zoom that's not too heavy as I always travel with just 1 carry on backpack.
The US government has had way too much access to big corporations, behind the scenes... to consider this in anything other a disingenuous act by the US government...
(I'm not talking conspiracy, I'm talking all the backdoors the NSA has had that the snowdon leaks exposed)
That can be true and it can also be simultaneously true that Tik Tock is cancer to young minds and a potential Chinese government psy op.
Would love for lumix to release two compacts - each with a 28mm field of view and f2 or 2.8, but one full frame (something like the leica) and a smaller m43 version that has the same sensor as the g9 mark ii, less bells and whistles and a 14mm f2 lens. Tiny and fast and fun. Starting with a 35mm sensor will really disrupt things if they do it well!
Fuji should be making one with a fixed lens medium format camera with either a new and faster 45mm or 55mm f1.7 lens (45mm will be close to 35mm full frame, 55 will be close to 44mm), I am interested to see the new Fuji MF 100Sii, but I really need to see the spec of it, does the new one carry through with better auto focus, sensor with better readout speed, and improve burst rate.?
Product Placement : Is marketing or advertising that involves putting a specific product (a brand) in a scene.
I’d really like to see Sony release a killer 28mm or 35mm f/2 pancake lens to mount on the A7CII or A7CR to compete with the rumored LUMIX or maybe a 23/2 pancake for the A6700 APSC. These would all be the right price range and be interchangeable. These new lenses would be snapped up in a second I think. Take care.
A good 23 m F2 pancake would be great for the a6700, or any of the a6000 series cameras for that matter. A good alternative to the old Zeiss 24mm F 1.8 is overdue.
Sony a7C I think is also a better option as a range finder type camrera plus you can change lenses if you want
Would love lumix to make range finder with m mount, and this fixed lens option. For the full frame fixed lens camera, make 28 mm lens with optional adapters for wide or télé like Fuji. Use a higher megapixel say 50 ish for crop purposes.
The audio gain of your videos are a little bit low, comparared to other videos I watch. In my system I have to put volume on 100%. Don't know if it just for me.
I hope the lumix is a 40mm f2. I think they are going to compete with the x100, a little more expensive, full frame, x100. It might have a leica lens like the lx100.
That would be interesting as the Panasonic would be competing with their partner’s Q3.

Tech guy monitored TT on his phone and was convinced it watched your activities on other apps not related to it.
Oddly as a tech person myself, TT hasn’t showed me anything related to tech fix (or coding)/ mobile communications that I uses the most… it showed mostly weird games (and I don’t game on my phone)… RUclips, FB, Disney (any other apps) pushes things I didn’t view and totally off topic as well… however once I search for it, only TT showed future recommends asked on my search history… RUclips pushes political topics (which I did not search) as it was the “talk of the day” in the news.
Can, or is, a 40 megapixel Fuji apsc be better than a 24 megapixel Lumix full frame? 7:09 Fuji, "but they are just apsc" as a reason for a more expensive Lumix full frame.
Is stacking a sensor, making for a worse image? How big is the downside of stacking a sensor?
It depends on the lens, but people generally pay more for a full-frame camera (even if it doesn't produce better results).
@@TonyAndChelseaGood to know. Thanks!
A fixed 24mm full frame camera sounds too niche for the mass market but it’s right up my alleyway! Maybe if it had enough megapixels for a 35mm crop mode it’ll be easier to swing photography enthusiasts
No HDR anymore?
If Lumix dropped a FF around 2k it would fly - and if it comes with a Leica lens - then it will be decent seller. And I agree with the 35mm lens - purely as that is a big criticism of the Q.
5:15 -> LOL!
I would buy a 24mm or 40mm Pana rangefinder. Would pass on a 28mm or 35mm. 📷📷
Will LUMIX be able to build in good stabilisation? That would make it worthwhile.
Why don’t they offer a small range of fixed lens cameras with different (fast)focal lengths? How about a 24mm f1.4 a 35mm f1.4 and a 50mm f1.4? Let people decide what focal length they need or perhaps pick up more than one?
I’m just waiting for the Nikon P1000 medium format upgrade camera of some 50MP. Also a small upgrade to this camera’s zoom from 24- 4000 mm optical zoom *4 digital would be pretty handy. While we’re at it a software upgrade equivalent to the Z6 wouldn’t go astray either all powered on an in camera dual en-el15c battery setup. Dreams can go wild, cheers
Nikon Z50 ii when?
Im most excited about the next generation of fujifilm cameras...XT6, Xpro4, GFX rangefinder style and the X100VII...in this order.
So lumix answer to people wanting less expensive compact cameras is to make a FF that can’t be either?
R3 on sale at my local shop 3500 us this weekend
I was really hoping that the LUMIX would be ILC, I’d love to see a smaller L mount camera that isn’t the awful FP2
Internal raw bet
Fujifilm GFX100S II gets my vote!
Panasonic Lumix sounds interesting for street photography.
I had no idea that TT was that big of a deal.. myself don't mess with it. As with DJI the Govt has been talking about this for a while now.
They've been a bit of a sleeping giant in lens manufacture...
I was surprised that the concern about TikTok was addressed so quickly while the possibility of DJI crowdsourcing gathering intelligence seemed to be ignored.
@@yajt6651 because if that large scale data collection were happening it would be trivial for network traffic to show it.
China has the best drone manufacturer in the world, bringing in 3.83 billion dollars last year… why would they risk that for some paltry intelligence that they could gather from a hundred open source sources…
Looking forward to the Panasonic RF style body. If as you suggest the lens is 24mm I’ll pass. Same for 28mm. Both focal lengths are too wide for me. That is why the Ricoh GRiii is a pass for me. Plus the GRs have no EVF. Leica and Panasonic are partners and a 28mm field of view would directly compete with the Leica Q3. At least the Q3 has the benefit of the 60MP sensor so you can crop in to 35 or 50mm. I’m hoping for a 35, 40, or 50mm lens and PDAF.
Monday I’m canceling my X100VI preorder. I preordered on the 1st day. Tried canceling today at 3:15 EST but the store is closed. Will attempt again Monday. I don’t want to wait one or two years for this camera. I just bought an used Sony A7C with the Sony 35/2.8. Close enough and cheaper than the VI. Life is two short for such a long wait.

I hope you’re wrong about the lens. I’d like to see someone launch a 50mm fixed lens and definitely something faster than f2.8.
Given Leica has a history of re-badging Panasonic cameras wont be surprised to find the Panasonic camera with Leica label on it in few months time.
which Leica models are re badged panos?

@@ChaitanyaShukla2503 Hello,
Thank you for the reply... I thought you were gonna say something else!
legal process only works when item is not considered as "national security issue".
which is to say, if you want to bypass the U.S. Bipartisan circle, or public opinion all together, just frame something "national security" around. that's how you got laws like Patriot Act or things like PRISM Project to pass in as short as a week.
that's how TT ban was done in an unprecedented speed, somehow put in the same bill as passing military aids... (i mean seriously)
I am expecting the true AI camera setting that picks the composition, removes the power lines, replaces the sky, and adds the Aliens all into your photo/video while live streaming. You know it is coming, probably to phones first. I hope all cameras get "authentication signatures" before this happens though.
I don't understand Fujifilm's philosophy. They are making medium format cameras priced as low as a full frame cameras. It just seems like they would do better if they entered the FF market and compete with Canon Sony and Nikon. Personally if you ask me I think they would come in third place knocking back Nikon into fourth. Its just that medium format cameras are too bulky, heavy and take up way too much memory. They should just leave it to Hassleblahhbahh
I think the main problem diving into FF for Fuji would be the need to develop FF lenses as well. Not that they couldn't do it, it would just be costly. Do you think that is the main reason they haven't done it?
@@charliejg Lenses? I doubt it. All they would need to do is just alter the mount. The tech is already there.
@@Ydkoll Of course they would have to develop a whole new lineup of lenses for full frame. Just change the mount so only 3rd party lenses would be used with a Fuji FF camera? That would not be sustainable financially. The Fuji aps-c lenses don't have a big enough image circle to cover a FF sensor. You can always use the slow, bulky, 2500 USD, MF Fuji lenses with a FF camera...but then..what's the point? Creating a FF camera is developing a whole system from scratch. That would take years and millions of dollars. To what? To compete in an overcrowded market? Fuji staying in Crop+Medium Format is smart as hell.
Medium format camera like GFX100S are about the same weight as Nikon Z8 around 900Grams but the MF lens are big, their 45-100 F4 zoom is about 1kg. The lens can certainly be smaller. To be competitive I think Fuji needs to open up their mount for third party lens makers, if you look at Sigma, they can make Sony E mount lenses for about 2/3 the price of Sony G master lenses with similar sometimes better performance. There is very problem for Sigma making Fuji G mount lenses. Most of Sigma HSM lenses above 50mm can be easily adapt to Fuji GFX with a number of adapter rings. Memory size is not often an issue for Fuji shooters. I have the GFX system and seldom find myself running out of space on memory cards.
@@jliang70 I doubt they would open their system to 3rd party lenses as it would be a huge hit financially. But I agree that it's possible to make smaller lenses. I shoot GFX but I really envy Hasselblad the new 38 and 55 which are f2.5 and a lot smaller (although they even fit in the leaf shutter). I'd love to see compact lenses like this in the GFX.
I wonder if Canon will ever join the fixed-lens compact camera trend. Their discontinued M100/M200 shows that they can make an APS-C camera with an extremely compact body.
Cool
I can't wait to see the new Lumix camera. I think if Panasonic includes hybrid autofocus in their new cameras they'll be immensely popular. They've always been good at design but their old autofocus let them down.
Similarly I'm excited to see the see X-T50. My X-T20 is still going strong but a better sensor and/or IBIS would definitely make me want to upgrade. In 2024 there isn't an excuse for not including IBIS.
I can't wait to see a real small MFT again. GF1/GF2 and GX1 had the perfect form factor...
Cant believe Panasonic are going to set out to undermine business partner Leica's sales, so I would expect it to be distinctive somehow from the Q and M series, something Leica might rebrand with a Leica interface. Not sure what that would look and smell like, Not 60MP and /or Not 28mm I expect. My Guess is S5 sensor hardware, sans, cooling and complex video modes, with a 35mm 2.8 pancake lens.
"Medium format Sony killer", NOT, Sony makes the sensor for Fuji and Hasselblad 😉
When gov starts prohibiting stuff, thats a power trip slippery slope!
$1.6K for crop sensor and fix lens, why ?
Can’t believe the outrageous film sim dial didn’t get a mention. Biggest fuji design scandal since the barebones x-t4 disaster.
Replacing the drive dial with a film sim dial makes this a beginner camera priced so high you could get a full frame canon with kit lens. It’s turning off a lot of people who were going to buy this camera (such as myself)
I suspect many, if not most of the buyers of the X100vi will be shooting JPEG with a view of doing minimal post processing. The film simulation feature will be interesting to folks used to using pre-set effects on their cell phones. Of course you can get more capable cameras for the price if the style, simplicity and JPEG-centric aspects of the X100vi don't have an appeal. Given the sales success of this line of cameras though, Fuji seems to have a winning formula which I suspect Panasonic/Lumix is hoping to emulate.
@@gabithemagyar The rumor is about the X-T50 ILC, not the X100VI fixed-lens camera, FWIW (X100 series never had a drive dial in the first place)
So maybe your suspicion was about the X-100 and not the X-Txx series, but I think you're definitely wrong about X-Txx users. It's an advanced camera that is equal to the X-T5 in almost all ways aside from those that make the camera cheaper and lighter. Surely there are lots of users who don't use RAW, but there are a LOT that do, and a lot who think the dial is a terrible idea.
Fuji seems to be trying to grow their audience by attracting people new to big cameras with the film simulations, but they are doing so at the expense of alienating their enthusiast users that was the camera to work well.
Clearly you can have fun with the film sims without putting them on a physical dial, or they wouldn't be so popular already.
24mm dear God I hope not.
LUMIX 28mm would be nice
Maybe most excited about a price reduction in the current function 100MP bodies. But photographs being what it is...might not happen.
It would be realy realy awesome if that Sony fixed lens camera was fullframe sensor size but four third, or 4x5, sensor proportions! That would be a real alternative, something missing in the camera market. And don't forget OIS. I would buy it at day one.
And if is to be ideal, instead of a fixed focal lens, a fixed dual focal lens, something like 24 + 55 mm. Woooow!!!
I’ve heard the tik-tok bill will give the government far reaching powers well beyond tik-tok.

24mm is too wide for a fixed lens. 28 or 35 is better.
I WAS excited about the XT50 with the same 40mp sensor and new processor + IBIS etc as it's bg brother the XT5.....but then they dropped the bombshell that they are replacinhg the drive dial with a........wait for it..... a dedicated none re-assignable FILM SIM DIAL - Fuji, what are you doing? This otherwise seriously specced camera is now aimed at SOOC jpeg shooters who want presets and processing done in camera!!! You don't need those serious hobbyist spces or the other great features for that. What a dumbing down move. They will lost sales to RAW shooters without a doubt

Oh, this All American national safety concerns? Under these allegations, all countries should be able to own and control their own portions of American-based social platforms. This is just pure BS!
I switched from Canon r5 to gfx 100s. I don't mind the bad af, mostly shooting landscapes. But the menus are absolutely terrible coming from canon. Nothing is simple and in one place. Settings don't do what you expect, and settings you want don't exist. Fuji needs to start from a clean table...
I did not switch, I just keep two camera systems, if I need something fast I just use my sony full frame, and use fuji for something else. I do like the PQ, the menu is bad, there is also lack of glasses ( fast prime, long super zoom, tele zoom). But I just adapt different EF lenses to fuji. Fuji really should have approach third party lens makers chipping in with third party lenses.

The Lumix should be 35mm f/2 because the Leica is occupying the wide angle market with the Q2 and is avoiding 35mm to avoid cannibalising the M range. 35mm would mop up all of the Leica customers who would prefer an old style Leica/Minolta CL compact of which I suspect there are many. It would also take X100 customers who would like some more bokeh.
Lumix full frame like S5ii is not a bad alternative to Leica, I think most of the electronics in Lumix and Leica are shared (much like shared platform) .
