I love how we were introduced to Dakota as the supposedly naive newcomer to the city, but her being like “what the fuck are you doing?!”, asserting herself as being uncomfortable, came as a big moment. A wake up call for Bertie, as well, to see that what she experienced was not okay.
If you've been a victim before or had an abnormal childhood, you're prone to being victimized again because of how skewed your sense of normal is. That's perhaps why Dakota recognized the behaviour as wrong and Bertie didn't.
You can really see Bertie’s trauma response here. Often times, victims of abuse, especially sexual abuse, will defend their abusers and not understand what’s wrong. Usually abusers will lure their victims by being overly sweet. Bertie looked up to Pastry Pete, the same way she looked up to her abuser. In a way, they shared similar roles. Her abuser was a swimming coach and Pete was a baker. They both trained her and aided her with her goals. She confided in both of them. When a victim is attached to their abuser, they can’t fathom the idea of them being bad people. She even says she doesn’t know why she’s defending pastry Pete. Plus, in her head, she’s already normalized his mistreatment. This scene was a trauma response.
it's very fitting that Dakota is a canary. coal miners used to bring canaries with them into the tunnels. if there were toxic gases present, the canaries would faint and let the miners know that they were in danger. so, Dakota was alerting Bertie to a toxic presence

Her character is riddled with anxiety and shame, even though it wasn’t her fault I realistically still see her blaming herself and carrying the weight of that shame. Shame for not being strong enough to stand up for herself when it happened to her and shame for standing by and watching as it happened to another. No one will blame her for it, but herself. Birty repeatedly shames herself for traumas she’s gone through in her life.

Honestly anyone grabbing you and pushing you around is harassment. If you get into a pool and someone keeps dunking your head underwater that is similar to this. They’re physically forcing you to do something you don’t want to do. Even apply it to other things like a random salesmen grabs your arm and pulling you to their shop. Sure it isn’t sexual and they’re not hitting you or anything but they’re still forcing you to do something you don’t want to do. It’s harassment and it’s sad so many people don’t see it that way.

Tbh this is kind of copium. Bocchi the rock came out, that had a very similar character. I think the biggest problem this show has is it doesn't have any stand out plot that draws attention. Bojacks first season starts out really mid but it's good enough at the end to make people recommend it. This show always felt like there wasn't that much going on. Like, they would explore controversial topics but then they'd do it as safely as possible like it was an educational PSA. Just, not really much crazy going on. And I mean I really appreciate some of the scenes of this show too, but I don't even know how or why I'd recommend it to someone else that's the problem

I’m glad that there are people to give others a reality check like that. Specifically ones that remind you of what you shouldn’t let others get away with.
Theres a guy I work with that acts like this. Constantly forcing his actions on women, then acting like they can't "handle the job" when they protest. He invites female coworkers to the beach 🤢 and invites people to nights out for a drink in order to dig up secrets about them or worse. I understand that you can make friends at work, but this guy wants to know your life and everything about you. He is just creepy. I myself stick to myself, I talk to people only when they seem interested and never try to hang out with coworkers outside of work. Or even go to there house. There's a line between being friendly and being creepy and this guy just crosses it all the time. We constantly lose good employees because of this guys behavior and its really pissing me off. Worst part is that guys like this play innocent. They never do anything that has any type of evidence and always play the blame game. Last month he quit and it was the best month of my life to finally have a stable work environment where everyone was happy and showed up for work. But he recently came begging for his job back. It's been hell as usually and we lost 3 of our newest employees. I lagitametly wish i could just snap my finger and have him arrested. But everyone he assaults leaves and never comes back. I wish just once they would get the courts involved. Cause I'm tired of this guy getting away with this shit.
Honestly, this storyline made me feel like a bad person. I am very VERY bad at understanding sexual innuendo and subtext. Even though I'm a grown woman, I'm 23. So, when Pete do this to Bertie, I was just perplexed and asked myself: "Is this normal? People do this?" because I think about it every time something strange happens. I didn’t immediately understand that his actions were bad (except for the moment with the pan, but I only thought “Damn, this is dangerous, the oil could shoot in her face...”). I don't know, maybe I'm too stupid for this world😑😑😑
I completely understand. I was confused the first time of this showing and shocked at Bertie’s response to that in the bathroom. Kind of scary I couldn’t piece together what it meant till this scene, Although I wouldn’t say this should make us feel bad, just more aware there are things we need to be cautious and understanding could be a subtext

That's exactly how abusers want their victims, tethered to their side no matter what heinous things they do.

It was a boundary test for him he wanted to see how far he could go the gets girls who look up to him and takes advantage of them she set the boundary and he still crossed it
