The reason the first chain lift runs so slowly is to give its riders enough time to think about all the regrets they had about their lives, before THE Beast proceeds to tear them apart!! At least that's how I felt the first time I rode it...
I've been to Kings Island so many times since 1987, I was never able to secure my own Beast footage. I'm happy when I see anyone's version.. thanks. Best memory, 10th anniversary 1989. Anyone have footage from that event!
I have been to the park three times now...this was the most recent, from 2017. My first time was 1999 (with the RCCGB) which was the 20 year anniversary - my favourite memory was riding it at night on that first visit, a fantastic experience!
Easily my favorite thing about this coaster is that it was made by the staff of Kings Island. Not GCI, CCI, RCCA… none of that. This was all an inside job, and I love it. Dying art nowadays. At least with Cannibal and Primordial, Lagoon is keeping that tradition alive.
A lot of people don't know this, but from the top of the first lift hill to the lowest point of the coaster there is an elevation difference of 201 ft (61 m)... That means if you were to build The Beast completely above level ground, you'd have to make the thing 201 feet tall!
I greatly enjoyed The Beast when I had visited Kings Island for a second time in June 2016. It was a fun terrain wooden roller coaster, that I found to be smooth. Too bad I didn't ride it during my first visit to the park in July 2014 as it would have been neat to compare the ride experience, but at least I got to ride it for the first time last year. Thanks for the great video, David! :-)
I had ridden it 1999 (fast but rough) and 2006 (heavily braked and dull) but in 2017 it was my best experience on this coaster and it has certainly jumped up my top coaster lists.
I rode it right as a thunderstorm was moving in one time. We got stopped on the second lift hill for an extended period. As you know, you are several feet above the trees back there so with lightning flashing around us,it made for some tense moments waiting for them to start us up again. Probably my most memorable ride on The Beast.
I go back and forth between the two because I love the twisting first drop that throws you around and I love all the airtime moments. And I LOVE the shed. I think it is a lot more entertaining than a regular brake run. I know most people were disappointed with the shed, but I think it is really fun and unique.
If you need a holding brake-run on a coaster, then having a shed is a nice way to do it...becomes part of the ride instead of that wasted bit of track before returning to the station...loved the Man-eater clip too :-)
Wait, if I read the description right, THIS is the longest wooden coaster in the world? Wow, seeing so many worlds ____ coasters on here, glad I came back to see them.
When The Beast first opened in 1979,it was the tallest, longest and fastest wooden roller coaster in the world. Still the longest wooden coaster,I think.
It's not really an airtime coaster...really about the speed and tunnels. In the past the ride has been either over-braked and dull or unbraked and rough, but was really impressed with this ride, superb speed and although a little bumpy was not rough at all.
Glad I've ridden it, but unfortunately not even in my top 10. Rode it in 2010, and the trims were so powerful in that first brake shed, we lost so much speed. Found it boring. Best bit was the helix off the 2nd lift.
I have ridden it in 1999 and again in 2006 and then a decade later. The first ride I had at night on it was wonderful, although I have also ridden it when it was over-braked and it was rather unspectacular. However the ride I shot this POV on was a really good one...nice speed and pretty exciting. Love that helix at the end though!
The ride was a lot faster in 2017 than the previous ride I had in 2006 - a so much better ride experience, so they must have eased off some of the braking!
I don't think they messed with the brakes, The Beast is just super temperamental. Most times it gives you awesome rides that you'll always remember, but sometimes it'll give you supper dull disappointing rides you'll instantly forget. I'm glad you were able to get a good ride on it! That 2006 ride must've been disappointing.
"Son of Beast" was only up for 9 years, the last year (2009) the loop was taken out because of a 'catastrophic failure' and continued to have problems for the remainder of the year. The station still stands but the "Banshee" now sits where the "Son of Beast" sat, in the action sector of the park near the front. The "Beast" is on river town, behind the Eiffel tower. The beast is now 40 years old and the park expects to keep it for many more years to come. sorry for the nerding, Kings island is my favorite parking and i love taking about it.
I know its not a popular opinion, but I honestly feel like the Beast needs to get the RMC topper track installed. Its not about spicing up the ride, but preserving it. No inversions or overbanking or anything, just add the topper and keep the track layout the same. At this point, I don't know if the Beast will last long enough to show my kids or their kids.
Hey, so in the below POV of testing footage for the Beast from 1979, the first lift hill almost "runs backwards", in that it goes fast at first, then slow as molasses at the end, rather than the opposite as it does today. Does anyone remember this happening when they rode it in its early years, or was this only in the testing phase? Thanks. ruclips.net/video/qxuso8McOcY/видео.html
The first lift hill is paced so tht the train won't crest until the train thts already on the course clears the second lift hill...they are separated by dividing the course into 3 different sections I believe..maybe 4 but I think 3...I believe in testing phase they were still working out timing trains as they ddnt hv computers running things bk then..as a matterr of fact beast was built in house by the original owner of the park and his genius partner using old school surveying and at times it was only going feet at a time building it as they measured....what an accomplishment...like the freaking Egyptians if roller coasters...nice
Hi Millie - thanks for your comment. This wooden coaster is a lot bigger 'beast' than Wicker Man, but it's great to finally see a new wooden coaster in the UK...first one for 22 years, so well done Alton Towers for finally seeing sense. Have you ridden Wicker man yet...I will wait until later in the season and visit with the European Coaster Club :-)
If you look closely at the end of the long straight section where that trim is, you will see that they are removing trees there. I rode this coaster a lot in 2017 and saw it for myself. I wonder what is going on. Giga?????
Delaney-Elizabeth Hetzer no it wasn't. That's on the clear other side of Mystic Timbers. You know that this video was filmed the year Mystic Timbers came out.
Of course...Timbers was already there...so no idea why they have cleared some trees...might just be landscape management? I have certainly not heard any rumours in respect of The Beast...and I can't imagine the park changing it as it's a classic.
Actually, they have set it up so that the train on the first rise will not go over the hill until the train on the second rise passes a censer on the downward slop of the second hill, thats why at the bottom of the first rise, the chain was moving so slow, it speeds up after the train ahead passes the censer. If the train ahead does not pass the censer by the time the the train behind hits the top of the hill at the slow pace, the whole ride E-stops. Its fascinating
I understand what you mean, but making a ride taller doesn't make it better...Son of Beast was huge and was a pile of ****. Some of the finest coasters in the world are mid-sized rides that hold no world records.
It offered a pretty good ride when I did it in 2017...has its better years and worse years I think. It's still an iconic coaster (and far better than Son of Beast ever was)
That was my previous opinion of the ride...but I was blown away by how much better it was this year...was not rough and was pretty fast...almost a different ride experience to my previous rides
It 'crawls' at 65mph...which is pretty fast for a wooden coaster. To be fair you cannot judge a coaster from watching a video...it's a very exciting coaster when you ride it.
In my opinion it isn't too rough...been on many much rougher coasters than the beast...it's not glassy smooth, but given how fast it travels then you should expect to feel that movement - and some of the RMC conversions have not led to smoother rides, indeed some of the airtime moments on the RMC rides are painful.
The sound of the wooden roller coaster is amazing
The reason the first chain lift runs so slowly is to give its riders enough time to think about all the regrets they had about their lives, before THE Beast proceeds to tear them apart!! At least that's how I felt the first time I rode it...
LOL - I think you are right!
Haha! 😂 but I’m pretty sure the real reason is it’s waiting for the coaster ahead of you to finish the second hill I think.
Hilarious. They should put up a sign saying that. 😂
What a blast !! Have always loved roller coasters. Wish I could still ride them. Thanks for video - makes you feel you are really riding
🤗🤗
Sorry that you can't still ride, but so pleased you enjoyed the video :-)
FANTASTIC!
Now, that's a righteous ride, as it has speed and a generous amount of ride time.
It was really flying, but not in an uncomfortable way
I've been to Kings Island so many times since 1987, I was never able to secure my own Beast footage. I'm happy when I see anyone's version.. thanks. Best memory, 10th anniversary 1989. Anyone have footage from that event!

I love this one and the one in chicago it has a bunny hop where it comes off track for a sec.
The start of the first chain lift makes TOGO lifts seem like a fighter jet.
Best coaster ever!! Night rides during Halloween with fog machines is fantastic!
It's a classic - really enjoyed it the last time I rode
A lot of people don't know this, but from the top of the first lift hill to the lowest point of the coaster there is an elevation difference of 201 ft (61 m)... That means if you were to build The Beast completely above level ground, you'd have to make the thing 201 feet tall!
where does it get to that deepness in elevation? the helix?
@@KoenMayra I believe the lowest point is right before the second lift hill. The bottom of helix is also pretty low in elevation.
This looks really cool
I greatly enjoyed The Beast when I had visited Kings Island for a second time in June 2016. It was a fun terrain wooden roller coaster, that I found to be smooth. Too bad I didn't ride it during my first visit to the park in July 2014 as it would have been neat to compare the ride experience, but at least I got to ride it for the first time last year. It's great to see Kings Island keeping up on such an awesome wooden roller coaster. I can't wait to ride it again! :-)
Was very impressed by my ride this year - good to see they are willing to maintain it after all these years
That surprise hill at the end is everything
Personally I love the beast, it's a little jerky but it's not bad. I like how it goes through the woods
It's amazing at night!
This hit me right in the childhood.
That was one of the best night rides I’ve ever been on.
I agree - it's excellent in the dark!
The Beast isn't a coaster it is a wooden journey!
Indeed - a wonderful terrain trip!
High speed forest bathing.
Or Voyage
Best time to ride it is at night! After drinking a few beers at that! Great ride! Can't see much of shit but feels it bigtime!
I have ridden it at night (sober) and it's a great dark ride!
I rode it right as a thunderstorm was moving in one time. We got stopped on the second lift hill for an extended period. As you know, you are several feet above the trees back there so with lightning flashing around us,it made for some tense moments waiting for them to start us up again. Probably my most memorable ride on The Beast.
This is my favorite ride hands up lol
Yup the goat
The Beast is easily my favorite wooden coaster. And it is probably tied for my number one roller coaster with Storm Chaser.
I never rated it as my previous experiences were far from excellent - I have since changed my mind!
Which do you prefer? Mystic Timbers or the Beast?
Great question...they are very different rides so hard to compare really, but I guess Mystic Timbers just gets my vote of the two!
I go back and forth between the two because I love the twisting first drop that throws you around and I love all the airtime moments. And I LOVE the shed. I think it is a lot more entertaining than a regular brake run. I know most people were disappointed with the shed, but I think it is really fun and unique.

Took my 10 yr old on it front and back seat it’s the bomb kids! He loves it!
Great stuff!
Wonder why they never added any sound effects?. Hearing the beast chasing you through the woods in the pitch black would be scary as hell!
I went on in it yesterday for the first time and I was SCREAMING and Crying that shit hella scary
My God
The first drop I would have done peed myself 😂 the highest ride I’ve road was the vortex
Vortex was pretty scary :-)
Omg we are going next week so scared
This ride hurt every bone and muscle in my body yesterday 🤦🏾♀️🗣
Actually I found this ride to be pretty smooth and it’s my 4th favorite coaster at kings island
What a great coaster. Legendary. Any good airtime on this one? Thanks for filming this one David. ~
Rob/Boston
It's not really an airtime coaster...really about the speed and tunnels. In the past the ride has been either over-braked and dull or unbraked and rough, but was really impressed with this ride, superb speed and although a little bumpy was not rough at all.
are there any stomach drops on the beast? it looks like the 2 hills might have drops but i’ve never been on this ride
It's not really an airtime machine, just relentless speed and more of a terrain coaster really
So you know how many trains 5is can run at maximum?
what's 5is?
This*
Glad I've ridden it, but unfortunately not even in my top 10. Rode it in 2010, and the trims were so powerful in that first brake shed, we lost so much speed. Found it boring. Best bit was the helix off the 2nd lift.

Wow you are very brave
I don't think it's brave...coasters are a lot of fun for me, so I don't consider riding them as bravery :-)
If I had to make a POV, I would just strap the camera to the cart and run away and wait for the cart to come back 😂😂
LOL - I think some POVs are made that way :-)
Superb😍😍
No, freaking way! The Beast is still open?! I thought it was demolished for the now defunct Son of Beast?
Yes, the Beast still operates :-)
Son of Beast was in a different part of the park
"Son of Beast" was only up for 9 years, the last year (2009) the loop was taken out because of a 'catastrophic failure' and continued to have problems for the remainder of the year. The station still stands but the "Banshee" now sits where the "Son of Beast" sat, in the action sector of the park near the front. The "Beast" is on river town, behind the Eiffel tower. GTA Cleveland I agree if kings island doesn't get a giga coaster RMC the Beast make the first lift hill taller, add inversions and airtime

This ride is kinda like the wicker man at Alton towers and btw I loved the video it would make my day if you reply
Hi Millie - thanks for your comment. I'm in fact game for brutally rough coasters like SOB would be one of my favorites if Kings Island didn't build Banshee! x'D
I liked Banshee - very powerful ride though!
^ I also love high g's felt on an Inverted! :-)
Gravity Group should have retrack Son of Beast
If you look closely at the end of the long straight section where that trim is, you will see that they are removing trees there. I rode this coaster a lot in 2017 and saw it for myself. I wonder what is going on. Giga?????
Hadn't spotted that - an interesting observation!
PS - Curious re your user name...I know there are no coasters in Hawaii...but are you from there? Just come back from a Hawaii vacation :-)
Delaney-Elizabeth Hetzer no it wasn't. That's on the clear other side of Mystic Timbers. You know that this video was filmed the year Mystic Timbers came out.
davidjellis my user name is that because my dream is to build an amusement park in Hawaii (which I most likely won't be doing)
Of course...Timbers was already there...so no idea why they have cleared some trees...might just be landscape management? I have certainly not heard any rumours in respect of The Beast...and I can't imagine the park changing it as it's a classic.
Forever Cincinnati
The hill at the beginning takes so long, i could have had 2 drinks of water, come back and it wouldnt be at the top yet
That's why I had to cut some out of the video...it took AGES to climb it!
Cpr1234 lol. Gp
I wen’t on this with my older brother and I’m only eight so I freaked out. It’s extremely jerky. But fun. I do recommend it for teens.
Panda Express I’m 11 everyone’s telling me to go on it I’m too scared is the drops big?
Unrivaled helix
At night that helix is just something else!
Oh that’s not so bad I gotta Ride it
How was it
this ride is so creepy but I will try it
What's creepy about it?
I went on this ride
What did you think of it? For enthusiasts it really has quite a mixed view - some love it, others not so much
I liked the double rise it just seems like they are asking for a accident if the electric motor failed the other cars would crash in to the stoped one
Change the name of the park it spelled WRONG it's kings doimoin
Firstly, the Beast is at Kings Island in Ohio. Secondly, Kings Dominion is a separate park in Virginia. Thirdly, learn how to spell Dominion :-)
freddy bonnie and chica ITS ME roasted
The Beast Kings Island
Too crazy
Theres a ride in the PNE of Canada thats called the beast not a coaster.
I rode this in 1990
Cincinnati!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jesus loves you guys
RMC the Beast
No need - it's not a lost cause, and I loved the ride I had on it last year
davidjellis I want the Beast RMCed because it too rough, if the beast was RMCed they could make the first lift hill taller
I understand what you mean, but making a ride taller doesn't make it better...Son of Beast was huge and was a pile of ****. Some of the finest coasters in the world are mid-sized rides that hold no world records.
I'm all about fun rides but the Beast is DONE. It's Dangerous.
It offered a pretty good ride when I did it in 2017...has its better years and worse years I think. It's still an iconic coaster (and far better than Son of Beast ever was)
I know that woodprix has the best woodworking plans ever.
Slowest chain lift ever
Believe me, I have seen slower ones :-)
Its slower in real life, trust me :P
@@davidjellis *cough* *cough* Goliath at Magic Mountain! *cough* *cough*
the have sped it up in the last two years, and it is now slow until the train ahead paces a designated point, then goes quite fast
Not a big fan of this coaster. Rough and doesn't do anything at all aside from the final helix.
That was my previous opinion of the ride...but I was blown away by how much better it was this year...was not rough and was pretty fast...almost a different ride experience to my previous rides
The Beast is rough
Lamest ride I ever watched what dose it even do but crawl. And make some turns and slow dips.
It 'crawls' at 65mph...which is pretty fast for a wooden coaster. To be fair you cannot judge a coaster from watching a video...it's a very exciting coaster when you ride it.
No the Beast is too rough RMC the Beast
Quinton Parchment obviously lol 😂
In my opinion it isn't too rough...been on many much rougher coasters than the beast...it's not glassy smooth, but given how fast it travels then you should expect to feel that movement - and some of the RMC conversions have not led to smoother rides, indeed some of the airtime moments on the RMC rides are painful.
davidjellis only painful if your tongue over weight or wasn’t restrained right.
