  • This is a fast-paced tutorial for replacing (removing and installing) the side mirror assembly (a.k.a. door mirror, wing mirror) on a 2014 Mazda 3. This video should be applicable to Mazda 3's from model years 2014, 2015, and 2016 and it might even work for 2017 and 2018. This video will also be useful if you need to remove the door panel of your Mazda 3.
This Mazda 3 is equipped with blind spot monitoring. When the mirror glass was removed it triggered the BMS (Blind Spot Monitoring) warning light on the dash.
The mirror assembly I install in this video is an aftermarket replacement made by "Kool Vue" part # BJD669181E.
I always perform repairs according the factory service manual. You need to have all the information (toque specs, testing procedures and schematics) to insure you've pinpointed the actual problem and to insure your vehicle is safe after you've completed your repairs. You download high quality factory service manuals here: shrsl.com/1llp5-11y0-aya4
The tools I use in this video are (In the order they appear): A curved pick tool, #2 Phillips screwdriver, Flat-blade screwdriver, Electric impact driver, 10mm socket, a standard coat hanger, and electricians tape.
Lightning Fix is a fast-paced DIY repair series meant to guide people though repairs in a quick and effective manner.

Really helpful vid! I would suggest removing the door speaker rather then the coat hanger trick to snake the mirror wiring around the window frame. I tried it your way and found it was still quite a bit difficult to maneuver the hanger. Removing the speaker is very easy, just 4 bolts and unplug the connector. Once the speaker is out you have a lot better access and can snake the wire around the window frame. Make sure to test the replacement mirror before you put everything back in (I got mine off a scrapped car). Also, the white plastic piece behind the door cover that is covering the 3 mirror bolts was a pain to remove. I found the best way to take it out was to use a very thin flathead screwdriver and work my way around starting from the bottom. Hope that helps anyone else.

Great video. I do have a good tip I wish I had thought of earlier... Attach a wire or a string to the clip end of the damaged mirror so that it will get pulled through during removal. Attach the wire/ string to the clip end of the new mirror to feed it around the window guide and avoid all of the frustration and curse words ! Much easier than trying to snake a hanger around the post.

Great Video. I just finished installing the passenger side mirror assembly. I might suggest, instead of using coat hanger to pull through pigtail, instead taping cord to exsisting
pigtail and pulling it to the outside, leaving cord in door. Then tape cord to new pigtail and pull it through. It worked great. I hope that makes sense.

I think you mean that when you remove the mirror assembly, just cut the old cord off close to the old mirror assembly, outside the car. And tape the new cord and to that end. Pull the new cord into the car and around the window housing, etc from there.

You just saved me so much on a crazy quote to replace my mirror! Just did it myself with your video and I want to point out to those reading the comments, the coat hanger is a suggestion. I didn’t have to do that at all. It’s not hard to feed the cable through on its own. Granted, I do have small hands (female, 5’5”) so I didn’t have any trouble there. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

You don't want to use a screwdriver on the door frame, as you can see it'll remove the paint. The doors aren't water proof at all and will rust without the paint to protect it. Plastic pry tools are better. If you have to use a screwdriver, wrap it with some kind of tape.

Instead of a coat hanger I used heavy gauge insulated stranded wire to help snake the cable around the window track. I fed the insulated wire through first and then taped it to the mirror connector. This made it much easier to snake the wire through.

Great video - very helpful. REALLY appreciate the fact that you show how to remove the interior door panel. Another video I watched started with that part already done and they didn't cover that. I am about to order the mirror for my son's 2016 Mazda 3, but I have a question for you: Once you put the new mirror on and plug the wiring back together, will the Blind Spot Monitoring work or is there some sort of calibration that needs to be done? I ask because I just helped my other son buy a 2019 Hyundai Sonata and the BSD was showing an error message. The dealer - not a Hyundai dealer - told me that it took them a while but they determined the source of the error was that at some point the mirror had been unplugged - possibly to replace, but they couldn't determine that. The unplugging and replugging caused an error code in the system. Therefore, they had to recalibrate the mirror in order to clear the error. Of course, this deflated my confidence that I could, on my own, replace the side mirror on the Mazda without professional mechanic help. Thoughts? I know different manufacturers put different safeguard in place in terms of what causes an error code. Just curious to know if you have encountered this "recalibration" situation and whether it might be an issue since the Mazda I would be working on is a couple years newer than the one you used for the demo. Thank you.

Hi, sorry for the stupid question. I have a 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback. I don't have the blind spot detection mirrors installed on it. Bought it that way. I bought the mirrors that work with my car, and have the bsm detectors installed. Will the bsm dash light work automatically, or is there more I need to have the bsm system? Thank you!

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question. Your car has BSM equipped but someone else put non-BSM mirrors on it?

@@Scooter_911 It is BSM equipped, but the dealership had non-BSM mirrors on it. Sorry, I hope that helps.

@@jadeanszombie7 oh I see! Well then installing the mirrors should be all you have to worry about. They do not have to be programmed to the BSM module. Was the light always illuminated on the dash? If not they might have changed some programming parameter to turn the light off. These would then have to be returned to factory settings.

@@Scooter_911 Thank you. No, The light has always been off. I figured I could go into the Dash display settings and restore factory settings?

Fair warning to all: to replace the back cover you normally pull on the mirror slowly to pop it off and then reveal the clips for the back cover. kool Vues are not built the same as OEM mirrors but function just as well. As a result, I snapped my mirror in half because I was unaware that they do not disassemble as the OEM. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Just used this video and installed Kool Vue. I didn’t snap a thing in half. All is well! Just have to be careful

Run a drag string with the old wire so it’s already prepped 🤷‍♂️

Can I just buy a Mazda 3 mirror without the blindspot detection? Those things are way more expensive. Unless somebody knows where I can get one for like 60 bucks.

    • @Scooter_911

The Kool Vue mirror I installed was only $100. If the car has a blind spot monitoring system and the mirror you install does not the BSM light will always be illuminated. You might also be able to find a good deal at a local salvage yard or eBay. Good luck!

My mechanic told me they can do this without removing the door panel. Are they full of shit?

@@Scooter_911 thanks for the reply! That’s basically my position too. If they CAN do without removing the door panel it shouldn’t be more than 0.5hrs labor, and that’s certainly worth my money.
