Boy did I need this video Father. It came at a perfect time when I needed to be humbled. Don't let the anti-Mother Teresa trolls get you down. They're always spewing the same, tired "Gospel of Hitchens" or other hater garbage about Mother that they find on the internet. Of course, we know the REAL force behind the attacks. God bless!

Where can I find Joy? "Be careful of climbing the ladder of success. You might get to the top and find that it is leaning on the wrong wall." Bishop has painted a vivid picture with the lessons of St. Mother Teresa to help us choose, wisely, the foundation to anchor our "ladders". Understandable that so many would lash out in disgust when they discover and admit that they (we) were foolish for how we have spent our life's efforts. God grant us humility and the courage to get started up the ladder for which we were made. Thank you for sharing, Bishop
Oh Bishop! You are annointed! I have discovered the joy of Mother Theresa who I wanted to be like! Jesus has taken all that I thought would make me happy, away, & filled me with more knowledge of Him & the awareness of His presence! And my hope is to share this understanding from the Holy Spirit, this Wisdom, Who is Jesus, explaining this joy and peace, that answers Theodicy, as I focus on Him, despite the pain and sorrows of my life, so that all will come to intimately know Our Papa God, Who is Grace, Who is Love, Our Jesus, Who is Mercy, Who is Love, & Our Holy Spirit Who is Compassion, Who is Love. The Ultimate Truth that I sought was to know that I am loved & Jesus has proven it by suffering, separating from the Father, from Papa, so that I wouldn't have to, as I chose by God's Permissive Will& Grace to listen & suffer believing lies of the devil, not understanding pain that God allowed to direct & draw me into my closer & more intimate relationship with Jesus where there is such peace & perfect love where nothing else matters... except that I have this burning passion to confess with my mouth to the world about His Perfect Love... I want to confess that I have repented of my doubt because He has healed my broken heart, mind, body & spirit & I have such gratitude to share my testimony & understanding so that every knee shall bow & every tongue confess, in reverance & gratitude, that Jesus is Lord!
@mjduke27 It seems to me that both are good things. The reason Mother Teresa's order is well known is the documentary that Malcolm Muggeridge did in 1970: "Something Beautiful For God."
I often remember vividly the photo of Princess Diana who embodied a similar likeness to Mother Theresa by her desire to touch the "unloveables" in society. I dare say, outside the time she spent with her boys, those vulnerable moments of truly serving another, may have been the only time she experienced the wealth of her state in life!!! In the photo, Mother Theresa appeared quite comfortable serving both "the best definition of a princess" and the deep poverty that her role as a princess provided her. The stark duality of the circumstance was definitely not lost on Mother Theresa!!!
@n3hemiah Numbering them has not made them less erroneous! The donations that Mother Teresa's order has taken in over the years (which certainly do not even come close to a billion dollars) have been used for a wide variety of purposes, but mostly to establish centers for her work all over the world. Her sisters, furthermore, are all trained nurses and they use all the modern medicines appropriate to their level of training. I guess you're a "glass is half empty" kind of guy!
Bishop Barron, how often do you visit the Sisters here in Los Angeles? As a weekly volunteer with them I, too, found the great JOY in them and the people we serve. Hope to meet you there one day.
It would be wonderful if you could send a film crew to Missionaries of The Poor started by Fr. Richard HoLung. (or Good Counsel Homes or Sisters of Life) He could have been a Jesuit Professor of Theology. He is extremely intelligent and accomplished Priest. His Preaching is phenomenal. His humility is extraordinary. He gave his life completely for The Gospel and helping the poor.
It is only Christian to do all we can to help people in parts of the world like Calcutta. The world always needs people like Mother Teresa. What troubles me is that many Catholics are going out of their way to ignore the principle of Subsidiarity to advocate for statist regimes mandating a redistribution of wealth. Defeating these arguments will be quite the battle in coming years, as TRUE human charity cannot flourish in such a society. (*Catechism #1882-1883*)
Out of curiosity, I know you read a lot of Christopher Hitchens' work and talked about him a lot. What specifically do you think of "The Missionary Position" and his criticism of Mother Teresa? Obviously you disagree with the thesis of the book, but going deeper is there anything in particular?
BloggerMusicMan hitchens makes the same mistake that many critics make of Mother Teresa's order in india. He assumes that she and the sisters are operating hospitals or some such, when in truth, they are offering care within their role as sisters. This means that while they do offer simple cares, they are not going to build surgery suits and emergency rooms with donations. They took vows of poverty. As of Mother Teresa's time in leadership, it was deemed those were not their calling or mission. much of their donations eventually went back to the church at the vatican.

+BloggerMusicMan Hitchens was a provocateur who made his fame by attacking religion and slandering symbols of faith. I can imagine that for Hitchens, attacking mother Teresa, who was a symbol of Christian charity and subject of respect by Christians and non Christians alike, he was saying that nothing is sacred to him. His criticism and insults were designed to provoke (and making money in the process), not to promote human justice. Using twisted facts like:... she preached suffering, dealt with dictators, mismanaged fonds.... are dishonest at best. Hitchens was not interested in truth, he was interested in impressing his growing anti-religious gang of followers. As if saying, no one dares to touch Mother Teresa? I dare.
The needs and relationship was less than should be 1970. The told story of who should control finance and the request meetings to talk. I watched her through war torn areas..with less than needed. The male counterparts at some place in the nightmare said no.
I have. Have you? I think the extent of your research doesn't go beyond what Hitchen wrote about her, which is 99% wrong. He has no footnote, no site references to his books. He used Sister Virgin as a source and she was never a nun and an arrogant doctor who wants to charge the people that MT cared for. I highly recommend you volunteer in Calcutta just for 2 weeks and see what they do with the money, instead of reading on it from a guy who has never met her or been to her facilities.

What have you done for the poor and then compare that to Mother Teresa. Point anyone who has helped or so-called helped the poor (nothing more than a photo op. for celebrities, which is only a day or 2 at most) and compare that to Mother Teresa's work.
In order to believe that Mother Teresa was not a saintly woman, one must only see that she accepted hundreds of millions (or billions) of dollars with the understanding that she would use it for health care, and spent nary a fraction of it on those in her care. Even assuming the truth of Catholicism, and that conversion is the highest goal, she inexcusably allowed unspeakable suffering to continue when relieving it would come at no real cost to her other goals, including spiritual ones.
@wordonfirevideo My apologies, I should’ve viewed more of your Catholicism project vids. My wish is that your project (or any other projects like this) becomes well known to people as Penn& Teller’s BS or Hitchens’ channel. But as of now many people in the internet are still only familiar with these biased videos.
@wordonfirevideo I thought I was quite clear. I'll put my propositions in numbered form. 1. Mother Teresa accepted billions of dollars in donations with the understanding that she'd help the poor. 2. This money could have built many good hospitals, even after fulfilling spiritual purposes. 3. Her centers currently crowd people onto adjacent cots with little to no modern health care (medications, painkillers, etc.) 4. People suffer brutally as a result. 5. Sins of inaction are still sins.
It could be argued that by staying in that hotel on that thicker mattress that you too were spending some time achieving a state of happiness. If you stayed on Mother Teresa's "thinner" bed at 114 degrees I'm sure you too would be saying "I'm missing something here that would bring me happiness" ? and rapidly head back to that thicker mattress in that nice hotel where air con is, (mostly), available. You too needed and wanted the benefits that money brings and were happy to indulge. I'm sure you were made happy in that privileged place! I'm not sating that it was a requirement of the title you hold or the words you breach that you were obliged to seek more humble conditions merely that their is much more to be added to your argument. Did you consider donating your your hotel room to a less fortunate person at any time? did it cross your mind?
a pestilent fellow in India, I've heard that it is common for people to look rich, like wearing and buying expensive things, in order not to look poor. Even the most destitute and poor do this. It may also explain, to some degree, the extreme poverty in most places in India

@n3hemiah I'll say that you have likely made 1 significant error (though it could be argued to be semantical)- it is quite unlikely that she took in donations that reached "billions of dollars," (plural)...though this itself raises interesting concerns...(how many millions was it?) I think that it takes an abundance of ignorance, confirmation bias, and cognitive dissonance to have any serious knowledge of Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and conclude that she was mostly good, let alone a "saint."
I'm a fan of Bishop Barron and appreciate his content on theological points, but as an Indian his Western gaze of a developed country is annoying. Yes, some cities do have visible filth - but such broad brushstrokes are strange - like there's a rush to paint a picture of abject destitution in everything about the East. Indian cities can be gentrified or visibly dysfunctional - but the malaise is always just below the surface\. Same for the US. There would be some alley in NYC with addicts shouting in despair writhing in a river of stench - it's everywhere you want to see it. Be cognizant that you are reaching an international audience and be aware of how you see; that there isn't that 'poor other' complex creeping in whenever you're talking of colored people in other places. For all you know, the conditions in which Jesus and his disciples lived and what they thought normal, would probably appall you. Get over being squeamish and don't be so obsessed with visual contrast. So the nun smiled, it's was another moment of connection with her favourite child, I'm sure many people in the US also smile in what may seem like a trying situation to an outsider.

With all the money the catholic church has they can afford to make a real change to the lives of all people not just in India but throughout the world. But it seems that is too easy. They will just keep perpetuating the suffering of these poor people because it suits the church to keep them so, just like this woman did. Also, why is this guy smiling as he relates such terrible stories of human suffering? They don't need bibles, they just need clean water
