What made be happy today is the beauty of the little things. After 3 months of quarantine in Milan, now I am in the countryside with my family and today it was a simple day that I spent with my little cousins (which I hadn’t seen since Christmas) and I studied a bit and played the violin. This was a simple day which reminded how important it is to appreciate the little things we have in life.

Greetings Ms Studer. I am a 70-year-old beginner, about one year on-off, Fiddlerman $700 violin and intermediate pianist, self-taught 12 years ago. Of all the YT videos I have watched, your videos target students like myself. No-nonsense, practical information regarding skills, scales, and maintenance. I like the way you share the pros and cons including your own experiences. Thank you for taking the time to assemble so many valuable resources!

I’m a violinist playing for around 5 years and don’t have an extra set of strings at home so I would really like the strings. I’m just so happy that during quarantine I’ve finally finish learning and performing Mozart’s fourth violin concerto in D Major. It’s been my dream piece to play ever since 3 years after starting violin from twoset.

I'm happy today, because I'm glad my mum made me pick up the violin when I was 14 years old. Initially I hated the violin and questioned why I should learn a 2nd instrument when I already play the piano! Fast forward to today, I can easily bring my violin with me wherever I go and play it whenever I feel bored or just need some music to lift me up! Whereas a piano, I can't possible bring it with me in a suitcase. I moved to a different location due to COVID-19 where there is no piano. So I'm happy at least I still have my violin with me :)

What made me happy today was this video, I’ve been changing my strings for years and this is the first time I’ve gone with only 1 fine tuner and didn’t know about peg wax, so that’ll be my next purchase when I get new strings! I’ll also send this to my friend who hasn’t changed their strings yet because they are scared of it, so I plan to help them out, but this could give them some insight about what to get and how to prepare for it! I've been changing strings every few months for more years than I care to think about but still found this tutorial really helpful. Here's a couple of further comments that I hope will be useful. (1) New strings take a few days to stretch out, which makes it difficult to tune four new strings all at once. Change strings in pairs. Start with the E and D, give them a couple of days to stabilize, then do the A and G. This gives you a stabilized, adjacent string to help you tune each new string. (2) Especially in warm, humid weather, the pegs can get very stiff and hard to adjust. One way to help this is to wind the strings so that the wound strings don't crowd up against the wall of the peg box and create extra friction. After you've passed the string through the hole in the peg, pull the peg out a little ways and take a couple of turns to the inside of the peg box. Then cross the string over the hole and take up the remaining turns toward the outside of the peg box. See if this doesn't leave a little space between the wound string and the peg box wall. (3) Strings age slowly but pretty steadily, so it's easy to forget how new strings sound. I play an hour or two nearly every day; I've settled on a scheduled change around every six months, When the time comes round, I'm still always surprised at how the new strings brighten up the sound of the instrument. (4) Modern strings are pretty hardy, but I still like to keep a set of used strings in the case for when I or someone in the group breaks a string: it happens. Thanks, Sumina: your videos are a help and an inspiration!

Hi! Sumina! What made me happy today is that I realized that having a great mindset and determination can’t stop a person from doing the things that he is truly passionate for. No one can stumble upon you when you believe in yourself and trusting the things that you have worked hard for. Those hours of practice will surely payoff oneday. During this pandemic, I have come to my personal realizations and this is just one of those, today😄. I have been a fan of yours for a quite a time and you have never failed to give me such great amount of motivation! I looked back at some videos from two years ago of me playing the first song I learned by ear. I started crying because I realized that even though it was tough, I improved a lot since when I first picked up the violin and when I filmed the video. Even though I am by no means a "great" player in everyone's eyes, I was able to look past the hateful words of strangers who heard me play, and I improved. Now I can play more of my favorite music by ear and I just use the criticism to work on my weaknesses! My violin lifts my mood everyday!

What made me happy today was to find someone who finally explains clearly everything that has to do with changing your strings. About a year ago I changed all my strings - I had never replaced them before they snapped. The thing was that I took off all of the strings at the same time. The bridge came off the violin because there was no pressure holding it. It was a nightmare to put the new strings on. Luckily, two empty spots in a thin layer of dust indicated where the bridge was supposed to go. I'm also glad that used strings have a second life rather than just throwing them away! 😁

What made me happy today is I'm improving a lot and following my violin teacher's instructions and suggestions especially on difficult finger positions really helps. Though they're not always easy for me since I have short fingers with a full size violin haha but step by step I manage to do it despite my violin sounding groggy at times. But with proper practice it sounds better haha.

Last year shortly after I started at uni, I started to experience shoulder pain and this last year has been a roller coaster with ups and downs. During (the kind of) lockdown in my country, I moved back home which meant that I stopped getting the treatment that I was getting, so the pain and discomfort kind of came back. I have used my quarantine time to learn more about my body and how I use it in order to increase my practicing-time. So what made me happy today was that I was able to practice and play more than I have been able to play in several weeks. (Loved this video by the way:)

@@victoriale6619 first of all you are a twoset fan😂
Second of all do you play piano because it helps at learning theory and violin
I am a beginner at violin
I picked it up 4 and a half months ago and I learned kinda good tunes (in my opinion but I get shaky bow a lot) like air by gottfried finger and Coleg y prifysgol Abertawe
These are trinity grade 2 pieces (yes i skipped grade 1 and initial grade)
      Hope you have fun
Also squeaking is probably from pressing to hard with the bow
Try to like apply a bit of pressure as a beginner because I believe you do not take dynamics as a beginner
Play a bit further from the bridge (for now that is what my teacher told me) and not on the fingerboard
      Play between them.
      Have fun

hi sumina!! first of all thank you for posting videos like these. it is really insightful and helpful especially the practice video you posted recently. what made me happy today or just these few months is that i’ve taken violin and music more seriously as i have more time to practice and spend time playing music now because of lockdown. i’ve never really been that interested in violin as i’m a student and have always been prioritising my studies over other things and was never disciplined in my practice but i’ve been finding a greater interest in violin and that makes me rlly glad and happy:). thanks sumina!!

Today I was super happy because I finally got to meet with my string quartet to rehearse for 3 hours. Literally today and it was the first time since the pandemic hit. And big congratulations on 100k! I noticed that when I clicked!

I have this summer job where I do yard work and pick up garbage from around the town, together with four other people my age. This is our last week at work and today I felt I was really able to talk to them and have fun while we were cleaning up some plantings. I feel like I’ve learned a lot from these people, and that maybe they have learned something from me too. I’m happy about the conversations about big and small things that I’ve had with them. I’m happy to see people of my generation care about the world and the people of this planet. These co-workers have in different ways made me feel hopeful and I’m happy for that too. Maybe I’ll never meet these four people again but I’m happy I took my time to listen to them and talk to them. It’s actually a little sad there’s only three days left of us working together :’)

What made me happy today is I just performed the Bach Double Concerto, a piece I've worked for 6 months, live with my son and wife with my family, teacher and friends watching ;). BTW, loved this video, it's incredibly information especially the part about the wool and peg wax...I can't believe I have never used either of them.

What made me happy today is finding this little gem that I will send to my students so they can also learn the techniques and methods used in changing strings. I sometimes use gut strings(I play the Baroque Violin) and I also note down when I attached that particular string. Nice to know I'm not alone! Cheers Sumina and all the best!

What made me happy today was practising my violin properly for the first time in months. Since the beginning of the lockdown I’ve gotten into slouchy habits of playing and haven’t been taking proper care, as here in the UK live orchestral concerts realistically won’t be reopening until 1st October. I didn’t feel like I had much to work towards as performing in orchestras is what I LIVE to do, but today started working on old excerpts and remembered why I fell in love with the violin in the first place. I hope everyone is coping well and continuing through these uncertain times!

What made me happy today was learning where to donate my old strings. This is such a great idea, and I'm happy to know that there are organizations out there helping out string players that may not have access to strings. Thanks for including this advice!

What made me happy today is that I have practiced and improved a little bit. As a violinplayer who started very late, I know that I would never be a professional violinist. But still I am having fun and I know someday I could be able to be like a pro.

My country doesn't motivate the teaching of classical instruments, it's extremely difficult and expensive to maintain a violin and find a teacher. So what made me happy today is finally being able to overcome fear, panic and anxiety and record again for my channel! I've been trying to learn to play for 4 years, and I feel frustrated and sad at times. I think most of the time. But I love to play and I wanted to meet more people who play and share what I find out. So I find motivation to continue, even when I'm desperate.

Hi! This pandemic is surely one of the biggest thing in our life now.. as an international student, i can’t even go back home to see my fam or even going out with a friend.. i’m feeling quite lonely as i live alone in a foreign country.. during these past few months, my violin and piano are my savior! I’m really thankful that i have my piano and violin that can at least brighten up my day whenever i’m feeling down like today ☺️
    Super love your videos!! ❤️

Something REALLY makes happy is that before this video, I thought changing a string is just "changing strings"😂 but many little tips like using the " wool" thing to wipe the fingerboard and the pencil to make the points where the strings make contact with the Violin smooth are learned( I cracked countless strings because of the rough contact points before😂)
    Cheers! Thanks a lot!!🎶🎻
( BTW, great video editing there! Neat & Clear)

Ah! Thank you very much for these variant tips miss! I learned a lot. I am a beginner by the way! Despite the pandemic, It was nice to be with my family and I was able to stay connected With my friends on social media. Practicing violin was a lot more easy during lockdown. A A lot of people aren't really have the luck to be with their love ones. And extroverts have the hard time to have something entertaining while lockdowns. I really hope this pandemic would be over.

What made me happy about this Covid time is that I have the chance to comeback to practice violin. When my mother died I lost the spirit to play the violin that she gave me as a gifts. However, during this time I realize that she can hear me wherever she is in heaven and play again the violin is way to remember her and made a tribute to her with my effort and passion and share that talent with my beloved ones. Love your channel! Thank you for posting those videos! Hi from Mexico!🇲🇽

What made me happy today is I'm finally making some headway into learning upbow staccato. My practice hasn't been so consistent since I finished undergrad and stopped having regular lessons three years ago, and throughout that time I've been stuck at 60 bpm and my arm would get way too tight, but I think I'm finally starting to grasp how to achieve the sound with a more relaxed bowhold.
