They had height advantage on the mountain & were able to see all the roads & Indian army installments which put us in disadvantage. They were also giving this important information of Indian positions to Pak Army since they were sitting on a mountain & could see everything below. So they could have done way more damage in long run if we allowed them to spy on us & occupy our strategic location like this. Also your suggestion sends a message to international community that India is weak. A country just came & occupied our land & we are not even fighting but waiting for them to leave on their own. India army in 1999 had very poor armaments as well so once element of surprise was lost there was going to be even larger loss of our soldier or that would have become the new LOC. Vajpayee leadership was foresighted and he took this hard decision after evaluating all possibilities.
It's not about doubting. It's seeking clarity. That's why we never lost a war where military was given a free hand. On the 2 occasions where political leadership poked their noses we suffered set back - like in 1948, 1962. But that doesn't mean that military leadership is beyond questioning. possession is 9/10th of law. We had to get it back before the west forces cease fire down our throats. Also remember the vehicles that were going towards siachen glacier were being shot using artillery. As the people sitting on top of kargil hills had a good view of the highway that goes towards Kargil they were directing Artillery fire on the lorries that moved stuff to Siachen glacier. .

The hurry was because of multiple reasons: 1. National highway 1A was being targeted to stop supply to Leh and Siachen. 2. They had come in Indian territory by crossing the LOC and once the winter sets in and ceasefire declared under UN and world pressure they would occupy height positions and more territory. 3. Reply had to be given to the occupiers by taking back the mountains. Question should be why not cross LoC and take POK and capture strategic places. In any conflict collateral damage is always there, one must think why we did not have laser guided artillery and missiles instead of fighting on mountains.

The reason to go up as soon as possible was to prevent Pakistan internationalizing this position and start to claim it as its own - remember, Kashmir is still seen as a disputed region and UN would have voted for a ceasefire with status quo positions thereby letting Pak maintain its positions on Kargil hills -- the same that we did to them in Siachen. It is the same mistake what Nehru did -- which was wait till Pakistan was halfway into Kashmir and then not pushing them back all the way before the issue got internationalized in UN. Also, from Kargil, they could have choked off the only highway connecting that region to rest of India.

The hurry was because of multiple reasons: 1. National highway 1A was being targeted to stop supply to Leh and Siachen. 2. They had come in Indian territory by crossing the LOC and once the winter sets in and ceasefire declared under UN and world pressure they would occupy height positions and more territory. 3. Reply had to be given to the occupiers by taking back the mountains. Question should be why not cross LoC and take POK and capture strategic places. In any conflict collateral damage is always there, one must think why we did not have laser guided artillery and missiles instead of fighting on mountains.

1. उन को पहाड़ के दूसरी तरफ से Supply भेजी जा सकती थी
2. उन लोगों ने श्रीनगर-लेह हाइवे को खतरें में डाल दिया था. इससे लेह-चीन बार्डर भी खतरे में था.
3. कुछ महीनों बाद बर्फबारी हो जाती. इससे पाकिस्तान को फायदा पहुंचता.

Agar Pakistan wale upar rahte aur ceasefire ho jata to use coti per kabja Pakistan ka hota aur usmein negotiation mein Pakistan ke pass ek point hota.

Pakistan wanted a ceasefire at earliest using international intervention and that would have redefined the LOC. So it was super important to win over the lost strategic peaks.

It is very easy to criticize past decisions, rather we should leave this debate.
We were in hurry bcoz vo NH1 ko target kr rhe the and supply to Shiachin was blocked during that time.
कोई इसको जल, वायु और थल सेना अध्यक्ष बनाओ रे।
Terrorist were targeting NH1 from those heights. This resulted in difficulty for supplying provisions and ammunition for military positions in northern Kashmir.
Therefore it was important to get those heights under control.
You were the commander sir, in the very early stage of the battle, you could have displayed generalship.

Humans do mistakes and we need to learn from mistakes.
The reason to go up as soon as possible was to prevent Pakistan internationalizing this position and start to claim it as its own - remember, Kashmir is still seen as a disputed region and UN would have voted for a ceasefire with status quo positions thereby letting Pak maintain its positions on Kargil hills -- the same that we did to them in Siachen. It is the same mistake what Nehru did -- which was wait till Pakistan was halfway into Kashmir and then not pushing them back all the way before the issue got internationalized in UN. Also, from Kargil, they could have choked off the only highway connecting that region to rest of India.
