It’s unbelievable what you two were experiencing- especially the part where Esther told that the professors ripped their paintings. I went to drama school and it was really harsh too - sometimes I think they are all traumatized by their own experiences back there. Hurt people hurt people. I am so glad Elli opened a revolutionary art school were we all get empowered and that the movement slowly is changing status quo! 💫
Schools aren’t supposed cuddle you, but rather give you a glance at the reality. You need to be competitive and strive for perfection. Put effort in! These folks on this channel clearly want to sell their own program, so they 💩 all over art schools. But art is a hobby, not a profession. If you’re not interested to be an art TEACHER or a RUclipsR like them, you’re in the wrong place. They do NOT earn living wages by PAINTING. They earn it through RUclips influencing and selling surface level courses to learn this hobby.
I showed a few photos of some art I had done to my oil painting professor, and he seemed almost offended that I would presume he'd ever want to see any of my work. I attended a gallery showing he had at the end of that semester, and his art was the most boring, unoriginal, unimpressive, and non-courageous I ever could have expected. The friends I had brought with me, and I were speechless
Part 2 please! I had an elementary art teacher that sounds like Elli’s professor 🙈 It only took me a couple decades after that to own the fact that I wanted to become an artist. I’m finishing Part 1 of the Mastery Program this week - so grateful for what you all share with the world!
Part 2 please!! This was incredibly eye opening. Many times in my life I’ve wondered if I missed out since I did not pursue an art degree. It seems like this will clear it up for me for good!! Thank you for everything you are doing for the community!
I got into foundational art college after leaving school at 18 (this was in the late 80's UK). Back then in UK University education was free (if it's possible to believe that nowadays) and so I got a grant, but my dad would not let me go and made me get a job instead. Hearing this I know I would not have survived, I'm far too sensitive, I would have had to give up and it would probably have destroyed my creativity. Now I just do art for myself and that makes me happy.
Art is a hobby, doesn’t need a degree, dear. But! These folks on this channel clearly want to sell their own program, so they 💩 all over art schools. But art is a hobby, not a profession. If you’re not interested to be an art TEACHER or a RUclipsR like them, you’re in the wrong place. They do NOT earn living wages by PAINTING. I finished art college last year. Like Elli I was able to take courses in multiple art streams, including printmaking, jewellery, photography, painting, sculpture, art history, etc. I decided to do a double specialisation in jewellery and painting. My experience was exactly the same as Elli's in that the art streams other than painting actually did teach techniques, and I did learn in these classes. However, in painting classes, we were taught nothing and received only highly subjective and pointless feedback. I had one teacher who was so terrible at grading that when I asked for my completed written criteria sheet, he quickly created a dodgy, invalid version overnight that did not equate to any of his original feedback and did not even add up to the grade he had awarded. In my opinion, he had no clue how to actually use the criteria sheet to grade as he felt it was his role to subjectively award grades based on his own personal artistic likes and dislikes despite the art college having a strict requirement that grading should be objectively based on the provided criteria. A year after finishing art college, I am still trying to recover my confidence in painting from this experience. Despite this horrible and completely unsatisfactory experience in the painting stream of my degree, I did enjoy all the other art streams and am glad I persisted in completing the four years. The art theory was particularly useful and that within itself was worth the degree.
Had the same kind of experience as a dancer in the Opéra de Paris as a child... high value teaching though but high mental health cost too. Thanks so much for your whole work and powerful mission Milan Art !! 💛💫🙏🏼
I went for an associates in graphic design online. Now, many years later, still no job in graphic design (low market for it in my area), owe over $40k, and have nothing to show for it. Now I'm trying to chase my childhood dream of being an artist, but I'm rusty! My husband is supportive and works hard for our family so I can build my dream business. I do have a goal to join your mastery program one day soon I hope!
@Arjay I wanted an in-house job. Tried the freelance, online, bid wars and hated it. Technically, if I'm honest with myself, the path I should have chose was illustrator, not graphic designer.
Art is a hobby. Why would you expect to earn from it? There are no jobs! Get a marketable skill and get a real job, so you fund your art hobby. Don’t ruin your life listening to these fakers, who can’t sell art, but stuck teaching some mediocre things and talk ВS non stop.
Thanks for this Episode...it was very interesting...i was born in Russia and even if i didnt go to an art school, i feel Esther 100%.. so many traumatic memories from the school...thank God, we can heal it and send instead of fear or pain: love to this world❤
This episode was so interesting! I did not go to art school (or college at all, actually) and have always wondered if it was a mistake. I opted instead to try to just start a photography business which has largely been unsuccessful, for a number of reasons. One being that I haven't figured out how to monetize the kind of photography that I enjoy the most: storytelling self portraits. Or if I even want to. Your channel has made me want to dig into the artist side of myself more, thank you!
I'm lucky in that I haven't had traumatic art school experiences such as these, my trauma instead comes from the small-sighted and ego-critical people around me
You guys are amazing! It is so touching and inspiring! I have not been in Art School and I did not know its that bad. I am missing on the basic skills of drawing though. Anyway, you are very inspiring and made me feel better and more hopeful about my future. 😁❤️❤️❤️🎨
That was an interesting conversation about how her art teachers only wanted her to achieve enough so that they did not surpass them with her success. I had an art teacher rip off one of my watercolor paintings back in college. She painted a very very similar painting to one that I had turned in, in my final portfolio one semester. I saw it in a faculty art show right after my class ended. I was pretty shocked. The teacher gave me a B-, by the way. :/
Ha, Savanna, I got that scholarship too around the same time, and 10 grand from Carnegie Mellon. But went to Tyler/Temple cause it was way cheaper. Scholarships sound great, but a lot of time they're to offset the high cost of expensive schools. Shop around. Accreditations? Wasn't sure if Tyler had one, but the school was good and didn't need it. Ironically I teach at one in the south that prides themselves on their Acc, but they only have it because they push to do the bare minimum to keep it.

Yes please to a part 2, we need to hear more!
You should PAINT more, not listen this ВS.
Please part 2! I have art school horror stories of my own and enjoy knowing I’m not alone 😂

Why are you restricting yourself to just your area? Go global!

I did an Art A level. Was not taught anything, no techniques, nothing, just given an assignment and told to do it.

Where is part 2?
