Who hikes with a fucking axe? An axe is fine if you're at a National Park campsite, or in your backyard. But I've never heard of anybody doing the PCT with an axe in his pack. Axes are way too heavy and bulky. Now, you have to sometimes hike or scramble with an ICE axe, but that's a different thing.

You guys are so funny and have taught me so much about bushcraft and have shown me knives that are really worth the money thank you so much for the amazing videos 😁
You have a saw to cut down the tree. The saw vastly outperforms the axe, and is much safer to use. Then you can have a saw for felling and cutting down logs, a billhook for delimbing and batonning, and a small knife for carving and bushcraft. Each tool is optimized for its use: the saw is the best solution if you need to rapidly part wood across the fibers. The billhook (rather Italian style: roncola bergamo for exemple) is best for medium chopping, batoning, and handling logs around. The knife can be kept as sharp as one wants since it will be kept only for light duties and won't hit any rock, and it's small size and specific use allows to make it quite light.
Axe for me, i don't like battening with a knife but i know its a bushcraft/survival skill if you do not have an Axe with you. But i am a knife nut haha ATB Del

I figured I might add my opinion on using a fire steel. I find pulling the steel back and holding the blade or striker stationary to be more controllable and in some situations when using small light tinder you stand a much less of a chance of pushing it away or spreading it across the ground. Just a little tip no one asked for 😂

This is why you should carry an axe with a small knife, like a puukko. Axe can handle a lot of situations and for survival situation where you could choose only one, it would be my pick. As long as you don't have to do any fine carving, you can do with an axe. I do my fires almost exclusively on an axe and only use a knife if that's all I have on me. The ultimate combo for the boreal forests here in Finland is a medium axe, a puukko and a blade for a bucksaw. One could build a whole log house with those tools if needed.
If I had to choose one? Knife. Preferably something like a BK7. But, given my druthers, I’m definitely in the “both” camp. As someone else on here has already said, the complement each other perfectly.
Im a Massive knife fan but the axe has its place in the camp for me but i agree what martin says in the dark you really dont want to be swinging an axe around great video boys
Totally agree fellas but where this falls down is where you have majority hardwoods (Australia for example) then an axe becomes more important. It is still a pain to carry it just saves you a lot more work at the other end and is therefore more worth while.
I'll take a well made Kukri, like a ZT Vakra. It's the best of both worlds. It's large belly, recurve, and weight make it chop as good as a hatchet, but the recurve can be used like a smaller knife. It's not as effective as either tool, but can be used in both roles.
I always carry a hatchet, 2 knives and a folding saw when I go bush. Never have too many cutting tools and with this I always have the right tool for the job. You guys know that you can split wood with a wooden wedge if you make one. Start a groove with your knife then use the baton and a wedge to save your knife.
I forged a knife that can chop down a 20 cm tree as well as do fine work like carving notches ;) That being said, always use the proper tool for the job you want to do, so I carry both knives and my ax into the forest...

+Zebulon! Oust! Thanks a lot!
I know that it wouldnt make a lot of sense but could you please do a Knife vs Saw or Axe vs Saw Video?
You Guys are doing a great job!

I love how much fun you guys have in your videos! Keep up the good work! With love from Canada!
In Maine we just use a ton of different tools. Machetes, axes, chainsaws, splitting mauls, and can't forget shotguns for limb removal
Axe always. Capable for much more and you can do a lot of precise work with it just like with knife.
If I had to choose one? Knife. Preferably something like a BK7. But, given my druthers, I’m definitely in the “both” camp. As someone else on here has already said, the complement each other perfectly.
I love axes so yea when I can use one I do. Also the music you guys have is amazing. Please keep the music
Im a Massive knife fan but the axe has its place in the camp for me but i agree what martin says in the dark you really dont want to be swinging an axe around great video boys

OMG. Almost 50,000. That calls for a free giveaway trip to the Netherlands to hang out with you guys.

All the best to you!
Totally agree fellas but where this falls down is where you have majority hardwoods (Australia for example) then an axe becomes more important. It is still a pain to carry it just saves you a lot more work at the other end and is therefore more worth while.
+Justin Bennetts thanks Justin! I completely understand
I'll take a well made Kukri, like a ZT Vakra. It's the best of both worlds. It's large belly, recurve, and weight make it chop as good as a hatchet, but the recurve can be used like a smaller knife. It's not as effective as either tool, but can be used in both roles.
I learned a lot from this video. Most importantly to start using the expression "pooping without force". Thanks DBK!
hahahaha! thanks joe!
+Buddha Mack yes we know that trick! You save the knife but might waste time. We rather save time haha! Only if the knife can handle it.
Keep up the good work! Always enjoy your videos. Really liked the slow motion splitting shots with the snow, well done!
Y'all's channel is growing insanely fast! That's, what, 20k just this month?

All the best to you!
I like using my Cold Steel Viking Hand Axe! Light and fast with a long handle!
I would suggest that for axe carving you keep the axe firm and move the wood stick on the axe's blade
The firemaking was oddly satisfying to watch :D
I forged a knife that can chop down a 20 cm tree as well as do fine work like carving notches ;)
That being said, always use the proper tool for the job you want to do, so I carry both knives and my ax into the forest...
