    People! There might be an uncertainty regarding the Fällkniven bolster issue. It was only a problem with their first production run and has been solved now. If anyone has a problem with their knife they can send the knife to Fällkniven and get a new and fixed knife which will not have this problem. Chapeu to Fällkniven for the good customer service. Everyone makes mistakes, it's all about how you solve them!

    You have a saw to cut down the tree. The saw vastly outperforms the axe, and is much safer to use. Then you can have a saw for felling and cutting down logs, a billhook for delimbing and batonning, and a small knife for carving and bushcraft. Each tool is optimized for its use: the saw is the best solution if you need to rapidly part wood across the fibers. The billhook (rather Italian style: roncola bergamo for exemple) is best for medium chopping, batoning, and handling logs around. The knife can be kept as sharp as one wants since it will be kept only for light duties and won't hit any rock, and it's small size and specific use allows to make it quite light.

      A point they made in this video is that they wanted one tool that's able to do it all even if its not the best and most optimised for the job.

      Who hikes with a fucking axe? An axe is fine if you're at a National Park campsite, or in your backyard. But I've never heard of anybody doing the PCT with an axe in his pack. Axes are way too heavy and bulky. Now, you have to sometimes hike or scramble with an ICE axe, but that's a different thing.

    I figured I might add my opinion on using a fire steel. I find pulling the steel back and holding the blade or striker stationary to be more controllable and in some situations when using small light tinder you stand a much less of a chance of pushing it away or spreading it across the ground. Just a little tip no one asked for 😂

      ^ haha true. I never had wrists hurting by using an axe all day. I dont know how he uses an axe but my wrists stay straight using them. Its like using a hammer. A long and/or heavy machette you use more as that as well but giving a bit of wrist action to it. A med. sized machette is just like kitchen knives, you use the wrists almost only. having a wife dont help... those wrists dont get no action no more as the wife does all the action now hahaha

      Or you could carry this amazing new invention they call a “lighter”. And if it were a true emergency (sure still carry a ferro rod too, why not?) you’ll use either your axe edge at the tip (you’ll still have a sharp belly)... or you’re hyper smart and carry a file too and have flatted one of the thin edges... (that’s what I do). Totally violates the ‘one tool’ philosophy - but working smarter means realizing you bring the right tools for the right jobs. Like lighters.

A true 'woodcraft' ax would fare much better in tests such as these as well. Granted, making spoons and things aren't going to be as easy but, a lot of the deficits shown by the DBK boys where the knife prevailed would turn out different with a more specialized ax.

    You can definitely use an axe to start a fire and splitting with a knife that size would be nearly impossible without the use of a baton which usually isn't too much of a problem. I'd just pick up a suitable stick but the fancy mallet style baton you use would obliviously have to be crafted before being able to chop down a small tree such as the ones you were. So that's something to take into consideration. But loved the video! :)

    Like you say batoning is a great way to maintain control of what you are doing, however you can baton an axe just aswell as a knife so "safety" isnt really a valid reason reason to baton a knife in my opinion. That being said I baton knives all the time. It's simple and fast and saves my axe from hitting dirt potentially damaging the edge. Its also by far the easiest way to break up wood in to splinters for firestarting. Oh and lets not forget "fun". I think its alot of fun to experiment with various loadouts for my excursions. Practical or not.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  7 лет назад

      +TheKimjoh560 fun is the most important part of it all!
      Grsnsfors does recommend not to hit the back of the axe as it could deform the eye where the handle is fitted. I used mine as a hammer multiple times though haha.

    Here is the thing, just use both. Just strap whatever fixed blade knife you have to your hip and strap your axe or hatchet to your pack or just hold it. Its not such a hassle to have both.

    actualy you can scrape a fire steel with an axe. use the the edge on the corners to scrape the fire stick. fire steel will dull the axe a little but not that mutch and in the corners it's not as important to keep it sharp. you still have the rest of the edge for your precision cutting and for chopping well it's an axe it don't have to be sharp to actualy chop anything becaus of the mass and the long handle wich converts little power in to a fuck ton of force on a small edge

    Wonderful vid!
    I was wondering if you folks have experimented with kukri's or bolo's? They have the quality of being both a serviceable knife and a hatchet in one tool. I have the Becker BK21, which is a very modernized kukri and it's pretty versatile. I also have a Tops Bushcrafter Kukuri which is smaller and more manageable for smaller stuff. I think you guys might get a kick trying them out. :-)
    Regardless, thanks for the vid. You guys are on my "stuff to do on Thursdays" list. :-)
