    I've been blessed to own quite a few really nice knives (*some even quite expensive for me), and the TOPS 107 ("C" or "E") is still one of my absolute favorites. In my humble experience, so many large "wilderness"-style blades are decent at axe-type stuff, but atrocious at actual "knife" chores. The 107 is definitely the exception. It'll split wood like a splitting axe, and then prep your camp food with the same ease. I try to tuck mine at the bottom of my knife cabinet, because if I didn't I probably wouldn't use any of my other knives.

    I have the 107C Steel Eagle. It is awesome. Large enough to chop, slash, chop branches and small trees. Large enough to dig and saw. Baton it to make firewood. Make fuzz sticks with it. Splinter down wood for kindling. I keep it under the rear seat compartment of my truck along with my tomahawks, space blanket, light sticks, kukri, shovels, and other survival equipment.

    Look after hundreds of hours in the bush I can tell you I never feel like those big survival knives are enough. They always seem to fall in this zone of not big enough or too big for the task I'm trying to do. Couple years ago I switched to a small machete, a Condor Village Parang and have absolutely zero regrets. These days the parang, silky saw and a good multi-tool cover the vast majority of my tool needs in the bush; If I don't have the tool I need I can probably make it.
    Mind you the village parang isn't perfect, but it has the weight and the size to fill the roll of a small axe or hatchet. There are some changes i would make if I had the skills to make my own, but in general the village parang is my go to for many bushcraft tasks.

      I contend that there is essentially no such thing as a "combat" knife. Knives aren't really used in combat and going by their use as weapons, in real life the kitchen butcher knife or cheap gas station turds have stacked the most kills or wounds (aka crimes). There are a few features that are better for worse for killing but most any knife is about the same level of "combat" as another. A Mora Basic 511 is only slightly worse than a Ka Bar and any circumstance that a Ka Bar would work, any knife probably would as well. It's mostly marketing and fantasy. Knives are tools. A piece of metal with a sharp side. If it's good for one knife task it's probably decent at all knife tasks. Every real-life survival scenario that involved a knife at all (and many don't) it was probably a low quality knife by modern standards. Has a knife in 3V ever been used as a weapon against a human or act as the deciding factor in a human's survival?

    • @arielgarcia5065
      @arielgarcia5065 2 года назад

      @@DL-ij7tf if there's no such thing as a combat knife then explain this: ruclips.net/video/AguH99wkX8I/видео.html
      Ok that was clearly a joke, now seriously:
      What's the difference between a mauser kar98k and a Winchester model 70? It's purpose. One is for hunting ("tool") and the other was created with the purpose of war. Everything is about propose. That analogy work as well with knives but in an opposite way. Most knives are tools and not weaponsbut there are also knives that were created to fight, to defend yourself from an animal in a hunting situation or from a human. Bayonets are combat knives (most of them are not even sharp by bushcraft standards). Kabar USMC is a combat and utility knife, being utility it's main function. The question is: will you ever have the necessity to defend yourself with a knife? Probably not. Would a knife made any difference in a modern war? Absolutely not, but I'd carry it anyway.
      About super steels like cpm3v, idk, I'm not into fancy steels. I just use regular good quality steels that work and it's fine for me.

    Tops gets a bad rap sometimes I think, because of some of their weird designs, but I think they are seriously the toughest 1095 knives out there, while still having impressive edge stability (due to the differential heat treat). I'd take them over the Beckers or Esee because I've seen those sheer and chip more, and you don't get a knife like this unless toughness is key.

    I'm alittle late but, did you try to use the bottom of the knife on the fire rod? It looked like it had a nice flat surface.

    Serious question...Getting ready for a camping trip. I'm setting up my big, small, and medium knives to include. For the "big" should I include the Tops Steel Eagle or the Extrema Ratio? I have both and am happy with both, but I have not field tested both. I would like your honest opinion.
