Peonies are beautiful. I just wish that they'd bloom for longer. They were my mum's favourite flowers and dad and I always take some to the crem for her when they're in flower. Happy Birthday to Richard!
I totally agree Wendy. Wish they'd bloom for longer but I think it makes them a little more precious that they are only around for a month or 2. I've tried to stretch the bloom time in the garden by choosing early and late season varieties. Fingers crossed that it works!
Yes I adore them and have about 13 Itohs, herbaceous and tree peonies in my small garden. It is true their moment of glory is somewhat brief, but oh my word.
happy Birthday Richard.I hope you are having a wonderful day. Peonies are my passion. I bought lots when we moved in here, but sadly , although my garden faces South, my neighbours trees have grown so tall that they now shade my garden and they are no longer doing very well. I am quite sad. I have Alexander Fleming, Bouquet perfect and Kansas. I also have quite a few Sarah Bernhardt, (4). which i absolutely adore, She's beautiful, the heads are heavy and they need a lot of supporting. I also have Shirley temple, Eden's perfume, Bowl of beauty, Coral Beauty and many otehre, whose names escape me- good job I hav e them labelled in the garden. I love the look of your new Peony, Angel Cheeks- gorgeous! Happy gardening. Thank you Annette 😃x
Thanks Be. Trees on other people's gardens can be such a nightmare. I feel your pain. We, also, have a similar problem in one corner at the bottom of our garden - I've decided to make it the composting area. Good to know we have similar tastes in peonies! Have just looked up Eden's Perfume - one to add to my list I think!
Sadly the trees go all along the fence line in my garden and some are over 40ft high. A Gledista, a magnolia, a Norwegian Maple, a Copper Birch and a forest birch. Completely wrecked my peonies and iris sadly :-( Sorry I am making you spend more but they are so moreish, ha ha @@cottoverdi
We have very similar taste as I grow 6 or 7 of the varieties you feature, and I've only purchased 12 or so varieties apart from a couple of mixes where I lost track of the types included. They are one of my favorite perennials, and I wish I had acres of space to grow them in! I'm looking forward to seeing yours blooming in future videos.
Wow! That's so fun Linda. It took me ages to decide which ones to order - my cart was full and I had to whittle it down to just these. I know I may have to wait a year or two but it'd be nice if I got some flowers this spring.
@cottoverdi The roots you showed on camera looked very healthy with quite a few nice eyes on them, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them produce a bloom or two each in their first year. Narrowing it down is hard but the loveliest gardens I see are the curated ones, not the ones that look like garden centers with some of absolutely everything thrown in and the choices we each make are what make our gardens so personal and unique. That's at least what I tell myself when i'm having to take items out of my cart. :)
Ah, thanks Linda. Good to know they looked good. I was quite pleased to see all the buds. Yes, I'm trying so hard NOT to buy every flower I love because I feel the garden doesn't have any rhythm if there is too much variety and insufficient repetition. Our eyes need a rest occasionally!
PS. Used to have Dr. Alexander Fleming too but I ran out of room and ended up giving it to a friend. It was an early season variety in my garden here in the South East, and did remarkably well in what used to be heavy clay in some shade, so really tolerant. I've had my Molly the Witch peony (P. Mlokosewitschii AGM) for 25 years, it flowers very very early in part shade and it's single yellow bowl shaped flowers are a wonderful sight, but blink and it's gone. The foliage though offers great border interest throughout Summer.
That's so good to know, thank you Laurel. I'm really looking forward to watching each one bloom. I'm so tempted to buy more - after making this video yesterday, it got me all excited about peonies and I can't wait! 🤣
There can be done good deals at the end of the bare root season for Itohs. They don't need any support and have a slightly longer flowering season. There are about 3 or 4 with AGMs
Yesterday's peony planting was cancelled. Back in Oct Lidl had bare roots for £1.99 but I hesitated. By the time I decided t get some they had sold out, but the had a few other varieties at £2.49, so I but 2 pink and 1white. To avoid the drooping (just as I did with the drooping Obdam) I have huge pots only 2/3 full of soil so that the edges prop them up. As part of my lasange pot planting, to go with the white one with the yellow centre, I'm under/overplanting them with my Narcissus Sun Disc, and to go with the pink ones I've bought Negrita and Shirley tulips as they come back ever year.
Sounds wonderful - loads of great ideas there, thank you. I think I'll try to get hold of some Shirley tulips next year - they sound like they'll be tall enough for my beds. Do you have any problems with badgers digging up your tulips?
Ah. We're surrounded by some open land, even though we aren't that rural. We've had loads of problems with badgers in the past but I'm hoping that the deer fence might have solved that!.
I've grown peonies for many years and are my favourite flower besides roses. I grow Itoh, herbaceous and tree peonies. I know I can always depend on my peonies for a great June display. I find that the Itoh and tree peonies don't need staking. I grow Dr. Alexander Fleming, Duchess de Nemours, Felix Crousse, Festiva Maxima, Kansas, Bowl of Beauty (no staking needed) and others I don't know that were given to me. Bartzella ( yellow, first itoh I grew and most favourite) and Scarlet Heaven and other Itohs. Bonny
Hi Bonny, we have some of the same peonies! Scarlet Heaven sounds fab - looks to be a lovely deep red. Some of my tree peonies need a bit of propping up - I'm tempted to prune the leaning branches so that they grow more upright - do you ever prune yours?
Hi Annette. Happy birthday Richard. I hope he had a fab day. Lovely video and i am enjoying the vlogmas. i love love peonies. i also got a delivery of them from farmer gracy today...9 of them so enjoyed your video. where did you get yours if you don't mind. interesting types and would love to order them as well. Thanks. Rose 💕
Thank you for your support. Sounds like you got a nice haul from Farmer Gracy. I've ordered from various places but the majority were from Claire Austin - she has the national collection of herbaceous peonies.
Your choices are exceptional! I ordered GARDENIA and it never bloomed nor grew any foliage...didn't look healthy when it arrived. Where did you order your bare roots from, if I may ask?
Thanks Teresa. Shame about your Gardenia. It sounds like the quality wasn't too good - I hope you contacted your supplier for a refund. I ordered most of mine from Claire Austin - I know she's expensive but they're an investment and I wanted to make sure they'd be good quality with lots of buds.

Wishing him a wonderful birthday

Excited just bought 9 not planted any yet ❤. David Austin’s daughter has a Peony company , some are so very expensive.

Ah, that's a great idea. Thanks Bonny.
I love peonies but my hubby calls them ‘pointless roses’ as they don’t rebloom and he thinks they are too fussy 😂
Oh no! what a shame - they are so blousy and delicious! 🌸

Various places to be honest. Try to look for a supplier that promises 5 buds and then you'll know you're getting good quality.
