When To BLOCK BET In POKER

  • Stephen Chidwick is one of the most feared high stakes poker tournament crushers in the world. He has amassed over $38,000,000 in live tournament winnings that puts him 6th on the all time money list.
To earn this much money through poker he has consistently put his opponents in tough spots by pulling huge bluffs in big poker tournaments. In this high stakes poker hand you will get to witness why other poker professionals never enjoy playing hands against him!
This hand takes place during the PokerGo cup in the PokerGo studio in Las Vegas. On the turn Stephen Chidwick breaks the mold and decides to opt for a min-bet (block bet), with his opponent deciding to call.
When you decide to min bet it can often confuse your opponents as it is such a rare bet size that people will often make big mistakes as they are not comfortable with how to proceed. Generally facing a min-bet you should not be folding much of your range as you are getting such good pot odds and your hand should have the right equity to call on most boards.
On the river Chidwick finds himself with just six high and no chance of winning the pot unless he pulls the trigger and attempts to bluff Dylan Destefano off the pot. Will he take it?
Thank you to PokerGO for allowing me to use this footage, check out this hand and many more on their RUclips channel here:

How would you rate (1-10) the min bet bluff on the turn by Stephen Chidwick? With 1 being terrible and 10 being GTO wizard like! Let me know!

The problem is that making that kind of small size block bet is screaming : I have a weak hand , pls bluff me !

Correct me if I’m wrong (good possibility I am) but wasn’t Chidwick seeing where he stands? Small min bet to kind of get a read? I’m still learning here & feel I’m getting better. On another note, glad I ran aross this channel on Spotify, listen to it often. Truly enjoy & appreciate then content being put out as it is helping me tremendously!

Well from my micro stakes games I know that line by most opponents, but in their case you mostly win the pot by 3-betting the turn, because if they bet small they usually just try to steal the pot as cheap as possible - given my extreme experience on high stakes poker as you can see....I dont even want to rate this play, but I think check raising the flop had narrowed his range down to an Open ended draw or a somewhat decent T, so in retrospective, to keep his head low made it much more believable to have hit trip 2 on the river - then again, would he had lead out the turn for 40K with a 2? What 2/3 would be in his range? some suited A2/3, K2/3, Q2/3 maybe J2/3? Would a doyle Brunson T2 be in his range? I probably had taken a slightly bigger stab at the Turn, like 100/120K (and most likely burned money with it like fishes do) OR in the position of destafano raised it up to such amount - I think destefano gives up too much info by just calling such a small bet...either he has thin air or if he somewhat wants a pot to play for he should have shown some strength - I think at that point you can be sure that chidwick wont go check check on the river. Its not really a board thats up for explosive Rivers (yes, destefano could have taken a lead by Q, 9 or J - but then he could have at least thought about thin value or check behind if the chance appears, or if chidwick still decided to bet into him having a clear(er) call). I guess I just had lost more money than necessary stuck in my fish logic - always difficult to see plays that work on expert level when stuck on stakes where some people act like they barely know what a full house is.

these guys are on the 7th level of thinking :) To me, it felt like Chidwicks line was floating the flop, min bet easily could be suckering his opponent in, and river feels like value...1 tough call with Q high there...great betting line...the other thing that poker on tv (while great) can't possibly capture the history of these 2...Chidwick may just "know" that for that hand, that was the perfect betting line to go at him with...

5:00 These guys are a bit beyond my capacity to rate, but I do like this. 1) That 8 looks like a better card for the BB's range than the Button's range, on a board that already looks better for the BB. 2) He's OOP so putting in a tiny bet doesn't reopen the betting for his opponent. 3) You might get a reaction that you wouldn't get if you checked. 4) Setting up a more credible bluff on the river.
All super cheap! I'll give it an 8.

I like his donk mini bet because I feel like the opponent thinks he’s trying to induce a check raise so overall a really strong line

I guess he has studied GTO and knows that turn cards and boards like this give him a range advantage? Pretty surprised at this play TBH, was expecting a check-raise. I guess he figures it allows him to take the initiative cheeply and sets up loads of nice spots on the river.
I can only score it if I know what range he's doing this with!

I think the key to this video is... Body language. Destefano doesn't look confident ... at all ^^ I think that's helpful for Chidwick. Just like people like Davidi Kitai or Daniel Negreanu, he's just reading this body language easily. In live poker, when I'm in my comfort zone, I also have this reading ability

8:50 I was thinking ace-high has to strongly consider a call here. I wouldn't or couldn't call with K high, and certainly not Q high. Tip your cap, on to the next hand.

Honestly, I find these tiny block bets can be super problematic-in the hands of a known top player-very hard to diagnose what is going on… I am also surprised Chidwick didn’t checkraise the flop though…
The deuce river is clearly a great card for Chidwick’s range and I think a big bluff is justified…

If you break it down by what the line cost you against a made hand, a gut shot, or two high cards(bluff catcher), you will see this line costs less when failed compared to cr the turn. If he checks turn and get checked back, and he fires river over pot, he might be called by some random bluff catchers. I am not saying he should do this every time, but I definitely see how there’s a lot of merit in mixing this on top of cr on turn

With the lead like that you can explore tendencies of the opponent.
However, it may open you up for a slow playing opponent. Especially if they know you're going to keep betting.
Judging one hand in isolation is really difficult. Playing at the table gives you an infinite amount of information by comparison.

10 because it's Chidwick and everything he does is great LOL. I assume he's studied and this is a line that is taken sometimes when the turn doesn't change tooo much on these types of boards. Villain had the small range advantage which is why he stabbed flop, but after we call we constrict our range and actually now it is us on the turn with a range advantage sometimes in these scenarios.

Just want to let you know I greatly appreciate your videos and content. I am beginning to really start grinding poker from the very microstakes and while I wish I could purchase Pokercoaching premium unfortunately I just had to empty my bank account on a surgery :SSS. Going to keep enjoying these vids in the meantime. Thanks for your work for the community.

Lead on the turn is interesting. I don't know how to rate it. I assume this bluff is just to setup a bigger bluff on the river. I think I'd rate it a 7.

I cannot explain this lead. normally you should lead with cards that give you nuts advantage like pairing board, or a lot of draws coming in on a low card board, like 4, 5,8 6. This kind of a blank. I assumed he would check raise the turn and win the pot. I give him an 1.. buts its probably perfect GTO

I'm with you on that, I think it's only because the villain completely bricked the river and had zero showdown value that it got through, imo doing that into a player with any kind of showdown value is getting called most the time.

I think choosing the bet small on the turn was a good move ;but I think I would have went with a bet of 80-90k instead as from my perspective a less than 10% of pot bet on the turn seems too low to tell a convincing story on the river that the 2 filled up your hand to a boat. I think this hand worked out because the villain missed completely and had no showdown value ;but I think A10 and maybe even K10 is finding a call there for less than 500,000 on the river. 40k bet to me seems like an open ended draw or maybe A8 or a stab with air, none of which are improved by the river card to justify a pot sized bet for value. The story being told imo (unless the villain completely misses and has zero showdown value) just doesn't make sense ;but I'm not a pro player...........yet.
