I don’t think people understand just how incredibly talented this woman is. She was absolutely perfect for the role of Persephone; she was born to play that role.
She has played this role since the musical was just being introduced in 2009, she has absolutely tweaked her character to perfection, she is such a talent.
I was so sad I missed her as Persephone, saw the show last March with Lana Gordon (who was fantastic as well, but can't hold a candle to Ms Gray) however I will be seeing her at 54 Below this summer, so hopefully she'll crack out a tune or two from HT!
In the hadestown universe she canonically takes drugs and alcohol down into hadestown so she doesn't have to deal with hades sober which then makes hades worse as all he really wants is recognition and not to loose everything he loves but I won't go to deep.
It's 100% deliberate. This version of Persephone is a drunk, and has been for a *long* time. Her first moment in the show where she's actually properly awake is the song that basically starts with Hades calling her out for it - "Have another drink, why don't ya?"
one of my favourite things about hadestown is how unique and striking all the voices are. not a whole lot of shows have parts written for a bass (hades), a countertenor (orpheus), or a contra alto (jewelle's fate), let alone all three. eva is a mezzo, but eurydice can be played by a mezzo or an alto, which is semi unusual for a lead female role. persephone's grit, the fates and hermes' edgier jazz sound. some of the best voices on broadway right now.
what i liked about this one is that it's a "find your seat" song and ushers will still seat people during the song. The story doesn't start back up until the next song.

D'Arcy Williams .....absolutely. I thought that way back when she was in Great Comet. But she brings so much of her own unique incredible talent and spirit to whatever she does.
Friend sent me this cuz I always send her metalcore. Was pleasantly surprised by her vocal ability. Insane cleans as I would expect, but with some super good screams (fry screams I think). Especially does well in the whole putting a bit of it into the vocals without sounding too hardcore. I believe this is what we call an amazing vocalist.
bucket list is to see her perform. she's one of those people who's still pretty early in her career but as soon as you see her you know she's one of the greats. been obsessed with her since pre-broadway great comet. swings this song so fucking hard, building the momentum and diffusing tension just so incredibly masterfully, with great ease and playfulness. blows me away every time
Saw her live on Broadway and she had that unhinged attitude dialed up to 11 lol, it was incredible. Stumbling around the stage as if half-drunk while still somehow graceful and totally in-control.
This song was a highlight of reopening night. Amber Gray absolutely KILLED IT and the entire audience was cheering her along throughout the whole song, giving her a big standing ovation at the end. It's obvious she loves this character and loves this song.
I love how Persephone, in just about any portrayal, is just a badass mom-energy type person who just hates her husband. And Amber portrays her probably my absolute favorite way ever!
