Notes:
was working on other things and artfight! in between hence I don't really know how long this took
probably should have boarded a second pass before stating it as final, missing the process of asking "why" a certain shot exists
used a raster canvas with a lot larger overflows, which was pretty freeing (maybe too much cam moves actually)
RAM wasn't big enough to render this baby as a movie from csp probably the gradient's fault
suffers from no idea where people are oriented disease - should have layed out the motions on an actual floorplan, not just with general direction based on memory but here we are
I see a lot of places where I could have done more action-wise, but this was supposed to fulfill my go with the flow of the music needs so deal with it uwu

Ive never thought that the line "there's a crack in the wall" refered to persephone seeing Orpheus getting through it! This has so much personality I'm glad someone animated this song

*_RIGHT?_* I guess I see what he means but at the same time this is gneuinely one of my favourite songs from the soundtrack omg... It has an entire song of just Persephone enjoying herself, what more could you want?

And I actually think this song provides important lore for Persephone's role in the Underworld - she may be sequestered to the sidelines (by both Hades and by herself because she hates what it has become) but this song shows that she finds small ways to interfere with Hades's rule. It provides lore as to what Persephone does behind Hades's back, which is try and get the workers to feel something again, to break out of their catatonic state of nothingness and own their souls once more. But inevitably, it isn't enough - Hades's control is too strong. So we get some look at Persephone's secret dealings (I honestly don't know for certain the nature of said dealings - is it literally paying to see the sky? Is it smexy times [given the vibe of the song and dance]? It's ambiguous but the lore is still there)
@@moist_spinachi can say for certain that in old productions, the speakeasy did have an actual viewfinder pointed at a crack in Hadestown’s walls. The choreography was for the workers to line up and look through one at a time. That was eventually tossed in favor of the show’s more generic and abstract set.
So yes, once it was literally going to see the sky!
Things I LOVED:
- The shades appearing as shadows when Seph turned the light on
- Persephone KICKING that poor faucet
- The facial expression on "THERE'S A CRACK IN THE WAAAAAALL"
- Poor disgruntled Hermes

oh joy to the world !!! i really like how persephone's hair is followed by little petals. hermes being a spotter while persephone deals is just a really funny concept. also the crack in the wall coinciding with orpheus getting into hadestown in wait for me. very good animatic i enjoy this greatly
Oh my god… This is the first animatic I’ve seen that shows the same mental image I had when first listening to the concept album years ago-Orpheus breaking through the wall in a pool of golden light as Persephone sings “There’s a crack in the wall!” And then the band intros! Iconic. (Although I’m pretty sure Robinson Morse plays the upright bass, not bass guitar.)
OH THAT MAKES MORE SENSE OOPS not enough research lol (regarding the bass thing)
In the show he plays upright bass (which is his main instrument; he’s played it for Hadestown since 2006 and it’s also his go-to for non-HT projects), but I have seen him play the bass guitar! He moves his right hand in a very distinct way when he plays standing bass and it carries over to bass guitar and looks really interesting. He plays with two fingers fully extended and all others tucked in, and when he has to pluck a far string it looks like his hand is lunging. It’s interesting to watch.
Honestly, my favorite song from the whole musical and definitely my most loved performance was of Persephone's. I really admire your depiction of her. And the way you don't really care about how neat your storyboards are and just depict the movement that's still readable Never Fails to surprise me! One of my favorite pieces of yours!

something i love about your animatics is that many people will straight up the instrumental intro when animating because its easier to just interpet the lyrics literally, but you do a great job of using the intro to set up the atmosphere of the song

OOOO the expression at the the was captivating!! seph's expressions the entire time were great. good forshadowing for later with giving us shots of the instruments at the beginning. I loved hermes throughout the whole thing, in his disaproval and slight worry.
RLLY loved the shots using the lighting to illuminate the spirits. and mmmmm the intro where we get to see the crack was super good. i enjoyed your choice to have the drinks be one of the few light things. almost as if it's one of the few things that brings light to the workers lives.

oh this is amazing I literally looked up ur channel bc I felt like rewatching a couple of ur old hadestown animatics and imagine my surprise when I found a whole new hadestown animatic posted just a couple days ago!!! love the design of the bar with light coming from the huge crack in the wall and flowers growing over machines!! love the persephone poses!! LOVE the dance break!! this is amazing!
