If you use air breathing rapier engines you can probably go a little bit faster. They take a lot longer to accelerate, and properly start outputting thrust at ~450m/s. I have often found it best to climb to a high altitude at subsonic speeds, then dive to unlock the increased thrust, and then you can accelerate to 1600m/s or more.
