They need to have access to food within 6-8 hours of hatching. Small piles of food scattered around helps them find it. They should have a full crop in 12 hours. 3 days later give chick grit.
The best way to handle a weak chick is personal choice, but I recommend never breeding it. I have noticed far too much weakness being bread into chickens lately; they are lighter, smaller bone structure, prone to illness, and lay smaller eggs. These larger hatcheries do not give a crap about bloodlines and the volume breeding weakens the entire species over time. I'm working on fixing the Buff Orpington in the US, which is a pale shadow of what it once was. These birds should be 6 to 8lbs for hens and 10+ for roos but they are HALF that weight in the US. It's no longer a dual purpose bird here.
One of our chicks keeps getting pasty butt. I have been removing it each day (two days now in a row). We are doing electrolytes in there water since day one. Hoping ours turns the corner . I have a full red lamp heater and have heard this can make the problem worse so we also have a radiant heater coming in. Fingers are crossed!
One of my chicks are very weak, cant walk properly cause of strength and keeps closing its eyes for some reason. Its had two days of rest, but still the same. Its clearly been eating, i even fed it myself and it also pooped. Idk what to do now.
Thank you for watching and for mentioning this important handling tip! You can flip the birds when checking them over or providing care, but they should not be laid on their back or held on their back for an extended amount of time. If you need to flip the bird over, you should work quickly to help minimize any stress to the bird.💖
