This was not composed for cinema. There was no cinema when this song came about. It is an ancient Hungarian folk song. It survived because an ethnographer travelled in search of intangible heritage and picked this up somewhere in Hungary in the 1960s.
It caused me to travel the deserts across Egypt and close to the Libyan desert just to see the Gilf Kebir...and led me to many more adventures in the desert. Amazing movie. I was only around 15-16 yrs old when I saw it. While I was analysing and enjoying the whole movie, my peers were too busy watching tv shows like Jerry Springer.
trixcentrix What total idiots your friends were! 😡😆 Hope you’ve found some new, decent and interesting ones now(?) You did SO well to travel like that! 😆😆😆🙏🏻🙏🏻🥰🇬🇧
yup. i flew across the gobi desert and thought of this movie. I always loved this part of the world. something ancient. the music is beautiful and thereafter kept finding other music like it.
Yes. Only those who have lived the desert knows what you are talking about. I miss the desert of Egypt very much and now, with the war and all turmoil in Europe, I think about it and I dream to go back and stay there....❤🙏💞💞
The singer is hungarian, her name is Sebestyén Márta. She sings and collects folks songs. This song is from a little village called Magyarszovát which is located in Romania. But a huge part of Romania used to be Hungary this village also used to be hungarian. See the name Magyarszovát (magyar=hungarian). So this is a hungarian folksong, in hungarian language from Márta who is a real hungarian treasure.
I remain damaged still by this movie; and has been on my mind for days. While searching for the soundtrack, came upon this RUclips video and thought I'd comment in kind.
This theme is so haunting that even after all of these years I seem to be spellbound by the song as well as the images on screen. Breathtaking, and HAUNTING. PERIOD.
this song, and this movie still affects me... one of the most beautiful movies ever to seen in my life. I praise the director, actors and all the people (stuff?) who helped to create it. Beautiful Art.
This is beyond beautiful, I've no words to describe it... "Love, love, you wretched agony, why didn't you bloom on top of every tree? On top of every tree, on a leaf of a chestnut tree, so that every girl and boy could have picked thee? For I picked once, but let it slip away,I picked once and let is slip away. I would pick again if I found a good one,a good and nice one,if I found my past love. What wouldn't I do for my past love? I’d spoon the water from the sea, I’d pick the pearls from down beneath to bind a pearl wreath my past love, for thee."

I was given this song in an online course at HarvardX as an example of a lament. It is of Transylvanian origin. The translation is as follows: "Oh love, oh love... Accursed torture. Why did you not blossom in every treetop? On the top of every tree, on the leaf of a walnut tree, so it would have been plucked by every maiden and unmarried young man"
No, you are wrong. It is a traditional hungarian song sang by Sebestyèn Marta, who was born in Budapest. It has nothing to do with Transylvania nor Romania...
It's not wrong saying Transilvanian, but you have to know, that Transilvania is the geografical name of that beautiful and big part of Hungary, wich in 1920 was cut and taken away from Hungary and given to Romania.
