I feel like this isn't a song about depression. It's a song about a man realizing the causes of his depression and upon coming to this realization he conquers it and passes on his story to others so they can live their lives and "don't waste it" like he had for so long. So cheer up peoples
At 34 I didn't I think I could discover a new band that would become my new favorite. My previous favorite was the Rolling Stones, but man, Cage the Elephant just pulls my heart strings. This song, Rubber Ball, and so many others. Simply GENIUS. Unpeeled is my favorite album of theirs, it's simply incredible from start to end. I saw them live for the first time in December, it was insane, I've seen a ton of shows, but this was one of the top ones for me. Long live these bastards!
Well they can't all just be screaming their lungs out, because these recordings are going to be on their live "Unpeeled" album. If this was just a regular concert I'm sure it would be much more upbeat and noisy.
Crank that Nipple Clamp. Also, some of the vocals seem to be from a recording. So even if they were screaming, you probably wouldn't hear it in most of the song.
Crank that Nipple Clamp. That's what I would think except that on some of the songs i think it looks like he's kind of yelling and the audio is quiet. I'm not really sure if they only took audio from the live or if they recorded it though
They were probably told beforehand that they were recording. I've been to a cage the elephant show and they go into the crowd and hype everybody the fuck out. Best performance I've seen
Two years ago I decided to tattoo part of this song, during what it's been now a 4 year battle against depression. “Time is like a leaf in the wind”, so I could remember to live in the present, to enjoy simple things and that time passes so fast. I'm doing better now, but today is a particular bad day and I remembered of this song. It makes me feel sad but mostly hopeful, 'cause when I listen it I know I'm not the only person who feels this way and that I'm not alone. So grateful for what Cage songs represented to me through the years ❤️

This brings me to senior year of highschool, few months before the pandemic. I miss those days and I am really sour that I didn't get to experience senior year to its fullest because of the lockdown and everything.
I'm 3 years late to this but, this song is so beautiful, the lyrics have so much meaning and such power to them, and the music is just wonderful. And the whole Unpeeled thing makes it even better. My favourite part is "Clearing my mind, losing my friends, following my fears, do it again. You say how do you do, man how 'bout you? man how 'bout you". Cage The Elephant are the best band out there and might just be the only good one too.
I used to love listening to this song when depression had really began to sink its teeth in. That was a year ago. Im even worse now. I feel so much nostalgia listening to this
It's rare to find a band that captures you with their sound and lyrical style as soon as you start listening, but I have another favourite band. I enjoyed all the styles covered on different albums, unusual for a band to make such contrasting albums, bands usually stick with their recognisable sounds once they get a big fan base but these fellas are pixies/placebo punk then trip rock on another, but as soon as I heard this track I found the music outstanding, then as I listened to the lyrics they began to upset me feeling like it was written about my life at the moment sounds dramatic I know but i've been at low point for a while the last few weeks. These lyrics seem to be about somebody hiding away from everything and not living.which is currently my life at this point. and when somebody says the words that explain it you feel like somebody knows the lows and you don't feel quite as isolated because you realise you're not the only person who goes through shit like this. Emotional blog over!
this describes perfectly how depression feels like(at least for me cause it’s subjective) especially the bridge “here in my mind losing my friends” “you say how do you do? Man how about you?to be free to be sold to be killed to be saved” “ In my head I’m alone” “I’m not dead I’m ashamed” “I’ve been trying to scape in my bones, I feel cold” “industry, industry” “let me go let me be” “Im alone can’t you see”

One of my favorite songs, great live recording. The fact that this only has 335k views says a lot about what music people listen too. I've seen a lot of live shows, very few have blown my socks off like Cage the Elephant.
what a great summary of wanting to be young and wanting to start growing up all over again. thanks for sharing it! i hope you’re doing great, happy new year!
guys i have a question, is the lyrics "to terrify, to find a thing" or "too terrified to find a thing" ?? I've always heard too terrified to find a thing and it always made the perfect sense, but yesterday i was looking at the Spotify lyrics and saw it says "to terrify"and then i checked other lyrics on Google and most of them says the same. but i thought too terrified to find made more sense following "afraid of what the truth might bring... desperately searching for signs" :/

So its not about depression but its about the causes of his depression, which is still about depression, nice dude
Dan Knapp existentialism perhaps

I really love how so many old people are enjoying this song in the front row. It's amazing how every age group connects.
Yes!!!
I noticed that too. It really is.
One of my top 3 favorite cage the elephant songs. I clicked on this so fast.
Same its my favorite

"Telescope"
In a far and distant galaxy
Inside my telescope I see
A pair of eyes peer back at me
He walks and talks and looks like me
He sits around inside his house
From room to room, he moves about
Fills his life with pointless things
And wonders how it is all about
Do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do
It's safe to say that
I don't think you understand
Nowhere left to turn
The walls keep breaking
Time is like a leaf in the wind
Either it's time well spent or time I've wasted
Don't waste it
Afraid of what the truth might bring
He locks his doors and never leaves
Desperately searching for signs
Too terrified to find a thing
He battens all the hatches down
And wonders why he hears no sounds
Frantically searching his dreams
He wonders what it's all about
Do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do
It's safe to say that
I don't think you understand
Nowhere left to turn
The walls keep breaking

Here in my mind, losing my friends
Fall on my face, do it again
You say, "How do you do?"
Man, how 'bout you? Man, how 'bout you?
To be free, to be sold
To be killed, to be safe
In my head, I'm alone
I'm OK, I'm ashamed
Just like you, I've been trying to escape
In my bones, I feel cold
I give thanks to the Lord

Let me go, let me be
I don't need to be here
I'm alone, can't you see? Can't you see?

Time is like a leaf in the wind

Those are my favorite lyrics from the song
I relate to "telescope" because it reminds me of myself going thru deep depression. The orchestra is impeccable & violins go straight thru my heart.

i pray to be able to go to their concert and sing this song at the top of my lungs

Saw these guys last Tuesday...what a great live band. Best show I've seen in years
Saw them a few weeks ago in CT. Best show I've seen in years also! Absolutely amazing live! Brilliant band!

This song is genuine heartfelt poetry. Just amazing of how most of us feel in the real world

Unpeeled just might be the best live album in the history of Rock and Roll. Up there with Frampton Comes Alive, and Allman Brothers at Fillmore East.
You don’t know how much I love this song.
Still to this day my favorite song, I’ve cried all three times I saw this performed live..
This song touched me greatly I cried the first time I heard this song
If Cage The Elephant stays a functional band through the next 20 years at least, I'll be able to survive this century of madness and misinformation.
So proud when social cues won best rock album. Cage the elephant is the only band that brings me happiness and joy in this shitty generation
The chorus and bridge make me cry for some reason and I can’t control it like it literally just happens
