I had a Tarantula about 30 years ago.., yes, I’m THAT old. 🤦‍♀️ This was before the internet even. I remember keeping him in a 10 gallon with no substrate or hide (yes, I was extremely naive and dumb). With all the care guides out now, I’ve learned a lot about the keeping of these beautiful animals. . . But I think back to that poor Tarantula 30+ years ago and I feel awful. If only I’d of known. ☹️ I don’t even know what kind it was. 😩

Same here. I had couple of tarantulas about 15 years ago. There was much less information available back then, even with the Internet. Now that I look back, their conditions weren't that good. They were on par with instructions online back then, but not even close to modern instructions. Poor things, I'm sorry I didn't know better :(

For me it was a gerbil, I had one when I was like 6 (I didn't even want it my sister got it for me) and back then not much was known about rodents,
He was kept in a tiny tails cage (very small cages that are not big enough for any rodent) and he didn't have a friend (gerbils are social) I'm pretty sure he got eaten by my dog too because my sister let him out and lost him.

Honestly seems to me your terrariums should have not one big door like this, but two smaller flaps that open vertically. That way you can open both to have the same access as you do now, but can also open only the top one to drop prey in. It would be WAY less faffy than what you're doing now that the last accident left you so paranoid.
