The replaced the timestamps in the comments, now they are in the timeline, it divides the video in sections.
@@LyricsFred but that doesn't exist anymore. They don't actually provide the segment in the videos. The playbar has nothing

"When is Wi-Fi NOT the answer?"
Playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online
Lmao I understand the pain. Although I played Super Smash Bros Brawl for Wii, my router was upstairs but my Wii was downstairs😅 lagged quite a bit lol
Hahaha this hurts my soul
or playing any competitive games
Playing literally any game sensitive to latency or latency variance.
ACTUALLY TRUEEE
Literally everyone who commented something about Ethernet completely missed the point of this video.
Yup. That's what I was thinking. The video is about home automation solution. You don't want your house to be filled with dangling "ethernet" cables.
Exactly.. Their brain need to be grown
That's the result of intentionally vague titles, because most people think of either wifi or ethernet. Also smart home stuff besides adjustable light is stupid
@@anirudhpuranik5222 I mean if they're in the walls then it's okay
@@nootics Nothing wrong with the title.. When WiFi isn't the answer means when wifi isn't recommend or needed.. Where the ethernet come from? Lol.. And those stuffs don't come with ethernet mostly for sure..
LoRa is the way forward for smart devices. Low power, low bandwidth, not in the already cluttered 2.4Ghz radio spectrum, running in the ISM band - around 433Mhz - 868Mhz & just a few milliwatts can reach an insanly, humongous range!
Been running multiple LoRa devices, each having a single 18650 battery & they've been going for about 18 months now & they've still got over 80% charge.
It would be the business if phones incorporated LoRa.
...Oh, did I mention that the range is insanly humongous?!
😉👌🏼
Linus's ad playing on linus's video, while he is earning from that ad being played, while he got paid while working on that ad.
Guys HE SMORT.Genius
Linus: and thats SMART not SMORT
I always mistake that pulseway ad for an actual video so I always get confused why I click on a bitwit video and get an ltt one
I guess the thing with not using Bluetooth for home automation is that you also don't really want the world's least secured protocol controlling your door's lock.
These videos are amazing for learning how to dumb down things for your relatives. Thank you so much for these ❤️
it’s not like they’re doing it for public service there’s an ad at the end of each one
The point of WiFi is when you need to use a wireless device like a phone or laptop the stopping point is when you have a device that never moves or is low power or low data rate. Also I can say that Insteon is actually cool and works well if would be cool if they did a video on that
Nah. I'm watching this over DSL that's connected to my phone.
Daamn
DSL SQUAD! My dad has basically THE WORST plan you could get (25Mbps dsl) and we have 6 people...
OOF!
@@collinschofield808 25 isn't so bad, if you actually get 25.
@@collinschofield808 Bruh, 25mb down/5mb up ADSL is the best plan my ISP provides in this area. It's pretty decent compared to some people who still get 3mb down/1mb up, or less.
My sister has a custom home that wasn’t built as part of a plant community but was their own design in an area in the desert with many of those homes. Although it’s in far North Phoenix that little pocket does not have cable pre-wired or DSL fiber-optic because it’s not a planned community built all at once. She only gets anywhere from 500 kbps to 1.5 mbps down. Hasn’t changed for 11 years. Even 4G is faster than that.
Naaa, I'm gonna try mechanical home automation using STEAM POWER! 😤
3:59 I am sure James can do a really nice Kermit the Frog impression :)
came down here to see if anyone caught that
I can't unhear that
James tries to continue on seriously after that, but still pronounces "longer" the same way which makes it even funnier. Got stuck in Kermit mode :D
2:23 James cut the video to fix his hair 😂.
Curb your hairspray
i really liked the new editing on these videos, it keeps me more engaged than listening to it as a podcast
Can highly recommend Hubitat as a home automation hub. It's rules engine is fantastic and easy to use. Supports both zigbee and zwave devices, and works with things like Hue lights and switches, even Sonos speakers. Solid product, and doesn't spam you or try to mine your data.
Z Wave always eradicates all evil in the galaxy. Power Ranger fans will get that reference.
Although a lot of that evil came back since then.
"Salad shooter" sounds like a trendy and disappointing hors d'oeuvre.
Just got a Linus pulseway ad before this 😂😂🤯

After so long an actual informative video on this channel
Got and extra dose of James today. Feeling pretty good 😊
Title: When is Wi-Fi not the answer
Me, with gigabit ethernet: *iT nEveR wAs*
Routers with these technologies enabled with them could prove to be good selling points for the home enthusiast that wants alot of IOT devices
It's low frequency in comparison. Mesh has very little to do with it. My Simplisafe home security system has eight year old batteries which are still going. It runs around 430MHz as opposed to 2,400MHz like Bluetooth or WiFi. The lower frequency allows the RF to penetrate walls and such more easily and it goes farther with less wattage. As a ham radio operator we can talk 15mi on 146Mhz with a mere 5W of power from a tiny, hand-held radio. We have guys with mobile rigs talking 50mi or more with better antennas mounted to their vehicles. Either way the big advantage here for power and range is the lower frequency. Going back to my Simplisafe system, I have sensors on my detached garage/workshop in the back and it talks to the base station in my house with no issues, but again, it is on something like 430MHz. It's all about the wavelength...
Interesting, thanks, James!!
Please make a video with a graphic to condense the pros and cons of Insteon, Bluetooth mesh, Zigby, and Zwave. Hearing the differences sprinkled randomly around the video made it hard for the information to stick, because by the time James reached Pro/Con number 3, pro/Con 2 has been long forgotten due to a relevant yet distracting information blast inbetween the two topics.
You can visit silabs.com to get a more comprehensive information. James did give good information though.
Each of those pros and cons have a different weight, so it's not a good idea to just add them up.
If you go to the site of the owner of a protocol, such as Silicon Labs, you're going to get biased information that makes their protocol look perfect in every way. RUclips videos are not the best things to base life decisions. There is a lot of text info on the web. Let google or another search engine lead the way.
When "the smartphone you're using right now" packs a Ryzen 3800X and a GTX 1080Ti 🤔
Bluetooth 5 Low Energy actually introduced meshing, however like Z-Wave, and Zigbee transfer speeds are extremely low.
Damn...........I had no idea, interesting stuff, and makes a lot of sense. Thanks James!!
Great distillation of info!
I love the face in the thumbnail
Very well explained! Thank you.
I love these videos so much
Jokes on you. I'm watching this video on my Desktop!!
thanks, love that
"Salad shooter" sounds like a drink from a vegan hipster bar

I find that choosing Zigbee means you can buy a greater variety of products at lower prices. Z-wave might be technically superior, but Zigbee ends up being more practical.
Great video...... Z-Wave and Zigbee are a must controlling Home Automation systems using HomeAssistant to integrate all. I use a Nortek HUSBZB-1 Zigbee & Z-Wave Plus USB Interface that has both radios in one USB.
I love techquickie!
superb bro 👍
All The Best bro 👏
Thread is basically Zigbee but without the standard device types and with IPv6 as the protocol, so in theory it might be easier to interface to the net.
When u want a good connection
nice tips for IOT to know about , thanks
Z-wave exists:
My 15 lever locks: interesting
Hey Techquickie team! Please double-check standards: "This standard specifies operation in the unlicensed 2.4 to 2.4835 [29]GHz (worldwide), 902 to 928 MHz (Americas and Australia) and 868 to 868.6 MHz (Europe) ISM bands." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigbee
The only video I have found that it's cleat 😅 Thanks!
"They aren't much faster than an old dial up phone". Oh you young un. Going from 56K to ISDN 128K was immense speed increase when I was a teen 😂
Right? I was like how is 300k anywhere near what dial up was? 300k was closer to my first cable internet connection!
Hello from a Smarthome DIY user!
#Sonoff forever!
Having different ecosystems can be frustrating. I feel as if home automation won’t ever really take off till there is some type of industry standards. Having a passion for tech I don’t mind, and I love finding solutions. But it limits the customer base to the techies.
This is my first time hearing these names and they're funny.
"Electric locks" have I been living under a rock 3:43
dont run out of power
i literally just had to write a paper on Zigbee. the timing dude. the freaking timing.
I would be interested to read that paper.
I just came here to say “ohh the Zigbee, oooh the zigbee!”
whats that sound oh its the zigbee again
Yeah WiFi absolutely would not handle fully blown smarthome installations. Our house has something like 80 different light switches, control panels, remotes, locks, motion sensors, etc. One consumer WiFi network would be overwhelmed, but the ZigBee network has been great (we've had this system since at least 2010).
Very interesting topic
Zigbee can operate in lower frequencies as well. I own Zigbee 900 MHz tx/rx interfaces I use with Arduino !
one good topic would be the different color settings on tv's and/or monitors and how to properly set those up. Like sRGB, ycr...something.
Appreciate this. I always thought of smart device hubs as kind of a rip off when wifi-connected smart devices exist.
Have you thought about the security implications of making your IoT devices accessible to the internet at large?
WiFi consumes a lot of power, which is a big issue for battery-powered devices.
@@Johnny.Fedora the odds of actually getting hacked are laughable, my friend. Although i'm sure the few rare cases have gone viral. You're far more likely to hear about it than experience it. I could spot bigfoot and the lockness monster before you got hacked on one of these smart home devices. Lol. 😂😂😂
@@legalize420, you have no idea what you are talking about. Google this phrase:

Love his voice.
You guys should do a "roast my rig" series, where we send you the details of our daily rigs and.. well.. you roast them 😅

Yes He is , he have a channel called Unbox Therapy , thank me later 🤗

Um, they both are completely different person. This guy in this video works for LinusTechtips
This is literally how SONOS works. I love it.
z-wave is awsome i can say as a developer of a smart home hub
this white background has blinded me
what about the Hidden side of the IOTs? the one honey farmers hope it stays that way.
Is this video a “what if I told you” meme
I use zigbee module in my project ..3 year a go .. it's easy to use 🙂
1:51 german quality of mobile data in villages 🙃
As ordering stuff for my smart home this pops up
Also u didn't tell about the fact that many devices in a single wifi router can make it slow down or have spikes in latency if the router you got isn't the expensive latest models.
How does the security of these protocols compare? That's especially important for connected home devices.
Does lightning fast internet speed make difference when entering to traffic jammed site or server.
i think philips hue had a similar thing, cause you need the expencive transmiter center to controll them all
4:26 When you're vegan and your iSalad shoots salad through your house via it's ZuperZiZiZeee connection^^
Which is more secure? The thing about wireless home electronics is the security. You don't want someone being able to break into your house simply by hacking into your electronic lock on your door.
When u can't afford a WiFi router
Thread is a great network as well. i have Thread & Zigbee products, both work great.
*But you didn't talked about the security aspect of these protocols.*
Living that Hubitat life.
No mention of LoRa 😢
1) Chunky walls
2) Other Wi-Fi
3) Maybe you're going from A to B over a 300m long straight corridor, a wi-fi solution would be really stupid.
@3:24 Note the “typical routers.” Some routers do. If this is important to you, look for the zigbee and z-wave Support.
Is that you Kermit?!?! 3:59

But zigbee IS bad in congested WiFi areas, hence the desire for enthusiasts to go with Zwave
