LJY08 To be fair "squidgery-didge" does sounds like it could be related to the word "squiz" (which means have a look), but to a degree I think you are right. I think being able to decipher context (what word/meaning should be there) matters more than the actual words used.

Because they're ears aren't familiar enough with the accents to differentiate. Just like many Aussies might not be able to tell the difference between some American accents and Canadian accents (me inlcuding). What I don't get is when it bothers people.
The problem with that last joke is that the audience knows what the punchline is going to be as soon as he finishes his set-up. The concept is funny, but as an audience, we're done being amused by the time he finishes the joke...
