As a Citroen owner and lover it is a great pleasure to be reading all those negative comments. The big picture is being missed here. First of all, Citroen/DS never wanted to be understood or appreciated. The car is French - it is arrogant, it doesn't care about the billions of foolish comments about the rear windows (like who gives a damn, you are riding an awesome French lady, man) and it shouts wilderness. Thank God, Citroen is unordinary. The car is not tempted by "correctness" of shapes or whatever from other brands. Yes, the rear windows don't open & yes, you can't find the "correct" rear visibility. It is like that. We can see the hate for that, but it is obvious - Citroen/DS doesn't care. At the end of the day most will turn their eyes on this car or will respect it for being that different lad from the class. Citroen cares for itself. At the begining of the party Astras, Golfs, 1s, A3s will sweat to dominate the field. But all of them will go home early with the ugly-to-average girls. Citroen/DS stays until the end to grab and fuck the beautiful chicks in the acoustic and "claustrophobic" rear seats. And chicks adore it. This is why Citroen spirit is adored. Remember - the original DS was not accepted hugely outside of France at the time as well. Any fucks given for that? Hell no. Citroen did their own thing. It's the same story today. Merci beaucoup, Citroen/DS - you don't care about the rest once more. Finally.
I have driven Peugeots and Fiats since 1974 and my first Citroen was a ZX Volcane in 1994. After the ZX I have had an AX, Berlingo, XM and now a DS4 with watch-strapped seats. Love this brand and personally I would prefer the Citroen name in it. After 4 plus years I still enjoy my DS4 especially on the long cruises. No issues except that it consumes oil (1 litre per 10,000 kms) if I hit the high notes consistently. Odo reads 120,000 kms.
Same here, bro. 1 year later - 40000kms under the bonnet. Flat out enjoyment and average consumption of 5.8l/100 throughout the whole process. Can stand behind every damn word in what I said an year ago.
Fairly certain Citroen do want to be appreciated - they’re not making cars for free for the love of it. The problem is if you’re making premium cars where the back windows don’t even go down then that isn’t ‘quirky’, it’s just annoying. I own a Citroen C3 which I massively regret buying because of it’s ‘quirky’ lack of any storage and dreadful driving characteristics. I will not buy another.
I used to own the C4 vtr petrol 1.6 - now got a 12 plate Ds4 airdream. I do like citroen and think they offer all round value for money as well as great looks. They stand out from the crowd and they are proud to do so. When the original c4 vtr was launched it set the trend. They are trend setters not followers. The only other brand I admire for design and trend setting is audi as everyone is copying there look
As a Hyundai driver I never thought I'd say this but I'm actually considering buying the first model DS4. It's just a great looking car with a lot of value for your money, especially when you buy a used one. Also you rarely see it on the road so you will have a quite unique vehicle.
I love my DS4, smooth, responsive, delight to drive. And I love it's typically French idiosyncrasies. Its a big two finger salute to to the German cars.
+gentle285 for 30k I would rather buy a 2nd hand S-class. If they want to sell cars they need to give good value options in the middle/small sector. For those who prefer ride instead of handling. Think of the old CS cars... they were as comfortable as top end mercs and bentleys.
+Jon Londrezos You say: " Make a comfortable, quiet & practical car with the magic-carpet feel. Call it whatever you want. I will buy it." Then gentle285 says they already make that, the C5. Then you say you won't buy it. Make up your mind.
+Jack Londonen I was referring to a small class, not the C5 class. In the C5 class the comfortable options are plenty. In the small class there is just the Golf. Makes sense?
@@JonLondrezos the C4 is quiet and definitely more comfortable than the Golf. But i hear you. there should be more comfortable options in the Golf class. Double wishbone suspension and air sprung. Citroen TA, DS, CX, XM or C6 were more premium than any other car in their segment. Making premium cars is no any problem for DS. I cant wait C6 successor
g00dfeeling Finally someone who likes the C6, I was always a big fan if the car, a little something different from the usual crop of luxury cars that's actually pretty good ⌒.⌒
+g00dfeeling Soon. We'll see something like the C6 soon. I just wish that citroe- DS would engineer a hydro-pneumatic suspension for their range. The DS5 at least. In the Citroen C5, it performs perfectly for comfort and levelness. It seems like a betrayal in either the DS' or Citroen's name to sacrifice comfort over "handling". Not if more there was a soft suspension on offer. Anyway, I have been in a Citroen DS4 on a trip in Belgium. The back was hurtful. My Prius is far larger in the back - and front. The boot was square - which helped, and that's all that had going for it. The seats were very nice though and in no way did the feeling of quality was ruined in the DS4. The AC and heater were powerful. And I would understand for some that for some people like me, the back was a cocoon of darkness. I prefer the cathedral or greenhouse impression. But for other people, that's just what they want. They want to be surrounded by dark plastic and leather. So they can see their phones without glare. Given how bold Citroen was in introducing the DS sub-brand with the DS3 first in the glut of the economic crisis, fair play to them in selling more than a few several hundred thousand of these examples.
If DS is going to be a brand, surely it has to echo the winning values of the Citroen DS car. That and the amazing SM were innovative and stand-out stylish. This car, and the others are so-called premium but just not 'amazing' enough. They need to be electric gas turbine hybrids with thought control and five wheel drive or something.
metro2002 the things i know... :D Renault and Peugeot/Citroen and now DS are very different in reliability, PSA have the dark year whit models like 307 or 407 every *07 to be right, but even those are quite reliable not the best cars to live, i have a 407 had a 406 before and in some aspects the 407 loses, its more cramped inside, uses more fuel its to heavy however much more refined ride. rui518 I would not switch from renault to peugeot, but that's just me. I would also avoid any french car from around '97 until '04-'05.All three brands made terrible cars that time. Newish renaults seem to be fine.My mate owns a 2012 clio diesel absolutely nothing to report so far, except that the clutch pedal became squeaky in the first 2000 kilometers (also very french hahaha)
Seen my first one up close yesterday, it blew me away, it looks awesome and sooo different I was loking for a practical estate but now I'm desperate to own one !!

I don't know why they decided to seperate "DS" and "Citroen". DS is also an identity of Citroen, all the important car that evolved Citroen over the years are cars with "DS" elements like CX, BX, SM, GS, XM, and C6. If they remove that "DS" essence from Citroen, all you pretty much left, is 2CV, which did not evolve for 50 years. They are literally choking themselves
Cars from the DS line are the only good ones Citren make now... but I like the DS3 most. It looks best, the handling is best and there are no noticeable trade-offs.
I drive a lot of rental cars who offer these Citroëns. Their standard is the c3, this one is tge more premium choice. This ds4 drives a lot better, I like the steering wheel.
Well, not really. They did cut costs and dumped hydropneumatic for creating...a normal suspension with a soft setup called "Progressive hydraulic cushions" wich is not hydraulic at all.

I think it's a good thing to call them DS, also Suzuki can create a brand Alto Club. Did manufacturers admit by creating new brands that they are not prestigious and they are normally aiming to create cheap low quality mass production cars for the big profit?
Great review Matt, I just don't see how this car can be considered premium enough to be compared to a BMW 1er, Audi A3 etc ... It doesn't even feel premium enough to match a Ford Focus Titanium or a VW Golf highline... Besides it drives like crap and it looks horrendous. The rear window which doesn't open it's just priceless... hahaha
+Kees Zoutzeling Well until you get inside of one you really won't know how premium it looks and feels. It isn't like BMW's always have the best interiors, I've come across more shit ones than nice ones in my life.
+BombayBerke I owned a 1er F20 and the material quality(not the looks) is great, you get soft touch materials and good quality plastic everywhere. Now I own a mkvii GTI and it's also top notch(apart from the back side door, which is not soft touch). A friend of mine had a ds4 and it did not impress me at all , it's really cramped and I'm only 1.86m, specially in the rear. I felt in a mini and the ergonomics is awful. Just look at how poorly this car sells and how fast it depreciates, that reflects how good it is. Citroen should try to bring a performance hatchback like the Megane RS, or 308 GTI to the market instead of trying to be "premium", something it clearly isnt.
I've got one the 1.6thp 200bhp engine gets a bad rep online hasn't give me any major headaches like suggested it's PSA/BMW engine and it's the top spec it's so comfortable and I love it would never trade it for a German car as mine is unique the petrol model is rare
Citröen was like a premium car brand of France with some of their cars like DS, SM, each... But in time Citröen became to a Peugeot. So they are trying to reise again with DS badge. I think it is a clever move for them. But they are not premium as their German and Swedish rivals. So they have to work harder...
You can find better wines and bread in so many places than in France and people is much nicer elsewhere. French stuff is all about la Belle Epoque refried marketing. But shhh... It's a secret.
brtmn Thank you for pointing that out. When I come to think of it, I actually agree... Still, I believe there are frenchmen that are more respecting than those I´ve met on Champs Elysees...
The back windows are such a minimal problem as everyone uses air-con these days anyway? It's pretty obvious that 'Matt' clearly hates anything that's not BMW, Audi or VW. All 3 car manufactures that know their buyers are paying for that 'named' brand, so don't give two hoots about improving. I like the DS range and hope Citroen continue.
Take them to the doctors and get some medication surely? Air does come into the back when the passenger and drivers windows are down, like most 3 door vehicles. Which by the way, don't have opening windows
To name it DS 4 as a brand it should be a bit more sporty looking then will fit better in the market for new brands. Maybe in France or Italy this small cars design are appreciated, it depends for what market it suppose to be. DS 4 without a big stand point (difference) it will confuse the clients more.
I'm sure people had their doubts when Toyota introduced Lexus or when Nissan created Infinity. Different dog, same trick. Is it a good idea? Time will tell. It really depends on the cars. If anything, I think they've done it too late - it would've worked better if they introduced the DS line as a separate brand from the get go. Now it just screams rebranding and that's not what you're after when trying to go premium. As for the rear windows... At first, I was like "what?! that is stupid..." But than I realized that with air conditioning, you rarely open windows... at all. Especially on the back, where kids sit, and kids are great at getting sick from drafts. So... maybe it's not such a dumb idea after all?
Well, Citroën didn't make the choice, PSA did. I think they made the right choice. Adding a few so called premium models to the range of a mainstream brand like Citroën and Peugeot won't work. Especially Citroën's image is not premium anymore. Almost no potential car buyer still remembers the glory days of the Citroën DS. DS does however face a two great challenges: First, they have to bring new, fresh and top notch technology cars soon. Second, the entire costumer experience from the dealership, over to the CRM from the headquarters up to their stuff on the internet and social media have to be on the level as well. They really need to get out of the comfort zone for this baby.
Hi Mat...once again you refer to the mpg of this vehicle being well down on the manufacturer's claim...you make the same comment in almost every review you do. Isn't it time some of the ways manufacturers' obtain those figures was exposed? ...perhaps a special episode?...using ultra skinny tires...removing side mirrors...taping closed all seams and the radiator...doing the "test" on a downhill run or billiard table like road...putting a "special" undertray " to reduce wind resistance...etc After the VW diesel scandal surely ALL claims, including those referring to mpg should be investigated...I for one would certainly look forward to such an episode or at the very least your opinion on the matter and perhaps taking a stand on the issue...cheers : )
Surely if your new to market with a "up-market" spin off brand, you would look at your competitors and see what they did well and then add that your product. You would see where your competitors fall short by conducting market research and make your car had those things out of the gate. It would seem at some point during a meeting someone should have been told to shut up and sit down, but instead the rest of the people in that meeting nodded and thought it was a good idea.
ugh dodge pulled this move already , this is a citroen DS4 to me, like the dodge ram is the dodge ram, one thing that has been bugging me is "(badge) says/has done" like vauxhall/opel. Vauxhall just produces the astra, truth is Opel calls the shots in europe. i wish we would adopt the opel nameplate and get rid of that confusion.
Glad to have you back Matt, that Mustang guy scared us with his... erm... approach. How cute it is that you omitted to mention HIGH LOAD LIP, rear door as melee weapon, cup holders, glove box, centre armrest, cubby holes... Just be honest next time and say: The car sucks, don't buy it. It's neither a practical car for regular guys, nor it's hot hatch, nor can compete with a3, 1 series or v30 in style or image. It's wishy washy, wanna be premium car.
They must have done some researches before they decide to change or create the new brand name, personally though...I think it's the matter of time for the public to get use to it.
Splitting the brand means splitting the loyalty. They should have just upgraded the existing Citroen brand. But Citroen has never done anything conventionally. Remember their DS 19 and 21, and even more amazing their inclusion of a Maserati engine on one model.
To name a car DS and not being offensive to her own history, citroen has to make a car that has the best ride quality, be innovated in everything, has space and practicality and could be desirable even 50 years from now. And they just make weird hatches that will be forgotten or are not desirable even now and they make a whole new brand out of this?
wow, Citroen silliness at its best!!! I don't mind the premium branding but those rear doors and poor visibility is crazy... too much chateauneuf du pape perhaps :)
it is a shame on a car this size that the rear windows do not go down. the rebranding to the DS brand is a good idea, however this will take time to separate more from the citroen models and feel like a brand in its own right. with this car you feel that they still are trying to find their footing in developing their own identity. it does show. but just give them time.
I have a 1.6 diesel one and it's good on fuel and quite fast but been 6dt1 and 120 kilo plus I only wish it was a bit bigger physically,I was also insulted at paying £223 for a stop start battery ,to me it's a good idea that's flawed and anyone buying one get it mapped or you'll get bothered with adblue warnings which to be honest the car doesn't need ,think long and hard before buying one is my advice ,I certainly wouldn't ever own another
I think it's too early to say if it's a good or bad thing! But if they really want to create a new brand they should have made new cars not just a facelift of the old ones since they still share parts with Citroen c models.
They have now. The current DS line up has no connection at all to the Citroen brand. The current DS4 platform is also used for the Opel/Vauxhall Astra and Peugeot 308
I liked it more when it was a Citroen. They're rebranding, but they're keeping the cars from Citroen range. Now we have Citroen DS4 and DS4, which are essentially the same - and both not very good. I think the DS brand will be a failure in the european market. The competition from Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo is just better.
That Denon speaker in the boot sucks. They have it for years now, they really should come up with a better solution like every other manufacturer on the market.
+Martin Kirk no, not double clutch... its a clasic transversal torque converter AT with Quick Shift technology and for that matter, far, far away from robotized manual transmission (caled ETG) you can find in Cactus, C3&Co...

I want to buy one, 2013, what are the most common issues?
o dear not very good there but another question is what is DS going to with the others in the range?
Citröen was like a premium car brand of France with some of their cars like DS, SM, each... But in time Citröen became to a Peugeot. So they are trying to reise again with DS badge. I think it is a clever move for them. But they are not premium as their German and Swedish rivals. So they have to work harder...
yey Mat is back!!!!
I'm not so concerned with the lack of rear opening-windows... than with DS being decades behind about security: no ACC, no automatic braking...
I'll still buy my wines and breads in France, but cars can be found elsewhere...
You can find better wines and bread in so many places than in France and people is much nicer elsewhere. French stuff is all about la Belle Epoque refried marketing. But shhh... It's a secret.
+Thierry77144 Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Chile...
brtmn Thank you for pointing that out. When I come to think of it, I actually agree... Still, I believe there are frenchmen that are more respecting than those I´ve met on Champs Elysees...
+Phil Jones
Parisiens are friendly if you speak french.
This isn't a Citroen car.
This is DS.
Bacon lettuce burger This is No Rear Windows
The back windows are such a minimal problem as everyone uses air-con these days anyway? It's pretty obvious that 'Matt' clearly hates anything that's not BMW, Audi or VW. All 3 car manufactures that know their buyers are paying for that 'named' brand, so don't give two hoots about improving. I like the DS range and hope Citroen continue.
Porsche Kingdom what happens if you have travel sick children?
Take them to the doctors and get some medication surely? Air does come into the back when the passenger and drivers windows are down, like most 3 door vehicles. Which by the way, don't have opening windows
To name it DS 4 as a brand it should be a bit more sporty looking then will fit better in the market for new brands. Maybe in France or Italy this small cars design are appreciated, it depends for what market it suppose to be. DS 4 without a big stand point (difference) it will confuse the clients more.
The real DS line will arrive soon with specific cars different of basic citroen.
And indeed it did. 👍
In my opinion their idea of splitting the brands is reasonably fear, if only DS was more desirable and more accurate in building their cars
+Piotr Podgórski something tells me you like the sound of your own voice
I read this comment aloud three times and I had the time of my life doing it. Your point?
Piotr Podgórski you're trying too hard.
Isn't it time some of the ways manufacturers' obtain those figures was exposed? ...perhaps a special episode?...using ultra skinny tires...removing side mirrors...taping closed all seams and the radiator...doing the "test" on a downhill run or billiard table like road...putting a "special" undertray " to reduce wind resistance...etc
After the VW diesel scandal surely ALL claims, including those referring to mpg should be investigated...I for one would certainly look forward to such an episode or at the very least your opinion on the matter and perhaps taking a stand on the issue...cheers : )
Would you mind if I would like to ask for a name of a soundtrack of that song in the title
Its a car to love and to use, not to sell.
What is the price?
Like the music in the title. Could you tell me the name of the music please?
They must have done some researches before they decide to change or create the new brand name, personally though...I think it's the matter of time for the public to get use to it.
What is the song in the title? Sorry for asking for that. But,I like it.
The rear windows don't open? What where they thinking lol
Can you lower the back windows now?
You can in the mk2 DS4.
yeay matt is back! :))
Splitting the brand means splitting the loyalty. They should have just upgraded the existing Citroen brand. But Citroen has never done anything conventionally. Remember their DS 19 and 21, and even more amazing their inclusion of a Maserati engine on one model.
Looks like a nice car.
james may will be proud
So why didn't they give it a rear pop out Windows better than nothing. You would be roasting in the back in hot weather till the air con came on
To name a car DS and not being offensive to her own history, citroen has to make a car that has the best ride quality, be innovated in everything, has space and practicality and could be desirable even 50 years from now.
I have a 1.6 diesel one and it's good on fuel and quite fast but been 6dt1 and 120 kilo plus I only wish it was a bit bigger physically,I was also insulted at paying £223 for a stop start battery ,to me it's a good idea that's flawed and anyone buying one get it mapped or you'll get bothered with adblue warnings which to be honest the car doesn't need ,think long and hard before buying one is my advice ,I certainly wouldn't ever own another
They have great idea with this DS brand.
I don't know why Mat is bitching about it.
Citroen apparently didn't get the memo about the world having too many car brands...
You just cannot improve your car by changing brand. What Citroen needs to do is to improve the quality of their cars.
DS sells really well in Europe, and China. In Britain, not so well, but that's purely down to badge snobbery.
That Denon speaker in the boot sucks. They have it for years now, they really should come up with a better solution like every other manufacturer on the market.
Matt is great!
yes to the d s name but no to fixed rear Windows
The bmw 1 series is lower quality in comparison to the ds4, and its a far nicer car to sit and drive in.
'The gearbox isn't as good as the one in the BMW 1 Series.' Gee I wonder why....
My boy mat
Having fixed rear windows in any 4 door car, let alone a supposedly "premium" car, is inexcusable in this day and age. Wow.
the best DS of the range is DS5, the DS3 DS4 dont justify the money.
Should call the brand Citron DS.
Actually this is not based on the C4 but it's a C3 body Like the Cactus
jam63112 so it’s just a c3 cactus with a posh body
I wonder if the automatic gearbox is just as horrible as the C3 ?
+Martin Kirk It's the same gearbox, so, yes.
+gentle285 no, C3 does not have automatic gearbox... it has robotized manual gearbox! the difference is immense...
+Martin Kirk no, DS4 has a propper 6 speed automatic gearbox made by Japanese Aisin corporation
double clutch electronic ?
+Martin Kirk no, not double clutch... its a clasic transversal torque converter AT with Quick Shift technology and for that matter, far, far away from robotized manual transmission (caled ETG) you can find in Cactus, C3&Co...
I'm wondering how many people actually open rear windows... As far as I remember I only did it once, purely by mistake.
