I feel very privileged to say I have sailed on both the original Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary back in 1956. My mom was English and married my dad. a Canadian soldier and moved to Ontario Canada. My mom took myself and brother back to England for a 3 month stay. I was 4 when we made the journey by sea and sadly I don’t remember anything from that time on the ships. This is a wonderful video and I feel very lucky to say I’ve been on both ships. Very sad to think the Queen Elizabeth burned and sank.

I'm a huge maritime history fan and ship fanatic who has visited and stayed on Queen Mary many times in Long Beach... My eyes tear up every single time that I see the Queen Elizabeth burning in Hong Kong Harbor; it especially pisses me off that it was arson... F__king pathetic!
Why do we always give our heritage away, this country is disgusting, the Queen Mary should still be in this country not long beach California it's the same with the Queen Elizabeth we gave that away too, makes me sick.

At 13 years old my Mum and I travelled to England on the Elizabeth and I will never forget it. A beautiful ship with wonderful officers and staff. When we arrived in Southampton my Uncle who was Master at Arms came on the ship and took me for a tour of all the off limits spaces…..simply amazing. when i was age 6 in 1961, my family stayed on holiday (vacation to western Brits) at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight (an island off coast of south England). one morning my Dad said 'quick, quick..come here you'll never see this again in your lifetime. i still remember the sight to this very day...looking out at the English Channel sea was something i will never forget. the Queen Mary going one way and the Queen Elizabeth passing her the other way. one ship had come out of Southampton while the other was heading into Southampton. what a sight as they passed and we heard the ships salute each other!
My father sailed on both the Mary and Lizzy during the war bringing the Gi’s over to the UK, he had many stories as to those voyages and with so many yanks on board most had never seen the sea let alone sailed on it and you can understand that with thousands of sea sick men conditions were not always pleasant. His favourite was the QE and growing up in Southampton I was fortunate to have been on board both when they where in port. He also was devastated when she was lost to fire and commented at the time how he could feel the fire burning the decks and cabins he was so accustomed to. He left Cunard in 1955 as he could often see the Jets flying over and knew time was limited, time to become shore based.
This was a fantastic presentation - the best I’ve ever seen on the Queen Elizabeth. You’ve done a wonderful job on this video. Those of us who love ships still mourn Elizabeth’s sad fate.
Alex, I thoroughy enjoyed this fitting tribute to the Queen Elizabeth. Indeed, I have always held her in the same esteem as do I the Queen Mary. The best ship launching I've seen on film is that of RMS Queen Elizabeth. There is a breathtaking sense of the sheer enormity of the vessel, and watching her slide down the ways, with drag chains kicking up dust, the largest moving object ever built at that time... It's positively dizzying. Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, delivers a lovely and moving speech, then has to hastily finish the christening when the massive hull starts to move a bit earlier than expected. The film is available on YT, and I highly recommend it to all who've yet to see it. 🚢Fair winds and following seas to all!

Your presentations are always so interesting compelling and your final thoughts tend to make we well up a bit and give me goose bumps. Especially with all the delightful experiences that are just part of airline travel today. Crying babies, karens, limited luggage, airline food, arbitrary TSA special surprise searches, rude travelers, the mad dash for an open lavatory, sweet smell of jet exhaust, and on and on.

This was wonderful, been a fan of these two ships since I was a kid in short pants. I remember the late Queen launching QE2...(footage of which is available here on YT) it was such an event...the anticipation of the ship picking up speed as it travelled down the slipway and then entering it's natural habitat. A pity new ships don't have this spectacle anymore. I love your videos...we need to keep the memory of these beautiful artifacts alive. Thank You
Today's ships are ugly boxes set atop a barge. They look top heavy and not very graceful despite the sharp bows. Did I just describe a container ship? I think both

Wow! Superbly done documentary, Alex. The QM | QE were remarkably lucky and the impact & career of them was peak legendary. Now I get why QM is often regarded as top among the liners. The QE is undoubtedly one of the finest looking ocean liners which also has the best looking funnels according to me. It is the liner which rarely gets any hate but is overshadowed in the community.

i am old enough to remember both these magnificent ships sailing along the Solent between the Isle of Wight and the mainland going in and out of Southampton, the beauty and grace of these ships is unsurpassed modern ships even dare i say it the newish Queen Mary2 with its nod to the lines of the old liners cannot match them , on a foggy morning to hear there ships horns booming across the water from the shore in Lee on the Solent would send shivers down my spine .
Great presentation, videos like this help preserve her legacy! and I totally agree with your statement at 28:20, there seems to be a growing love for the QE, there is a guy making a massive lego model of her for example, I would recommend checking it out if love the Elizabeth!
I never really cared for the Lizzy, always overshadowed by the Queen Mary. But the Elizabeth has grown on me, to the point I now prefer her over her sister, fantastic ship! Do you have any more details on that model you mentioned? thanks
I wish I had visited the Queen Mary when I visited California last month. I love the Art Deco designs. An Unsolved Mysteries show and a Poirot episode were filmed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It's said the Queen Mary has ghosts. That's on my bucket list to visit this ship and get some In and Out Burger while I'm there.
All these old Liners carried a grace that todays Condo crates lack. 365* Promenades, a Sheer, Stately Decor, one on one service, real food service, the gentle roll. Totally timeless era now lost.
Alex, this definitely one of your best productions to date! You told the story of the RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH in the best way possible. I was brought to tears as you read aloud, the letter sent from the secretary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother to CY Tung on the loss of the ship. It is only natural that many of us have our "favorite" between both Queens... and I will admit that QUEEN MARY will always be my favorite... but that certainly does not mean that I have any less appreciation or respect for the history and beauty of QE. I only wish I had had the chance to experience QE in person. She was lost on January 9th, 1972... and I was born on November 23rd... just a few months too late! 😀
My Granny`s younger brother George Guy Morris was a Cunard Commodore.Can vividly remember him describe docking in New York without the benefit of tugs because of a strike or racing the SS United States.The guy had bags of charisma and a parrot with a nasty vocabulary.
I do love RMS Queen Elizabeth, but I’m still tied to RMS Queen Mary. Though, I am just as fascinated by her history as I am with Queen Mary’s. If the QE had been a successful floating hotel or if she hadn’t caught fire while being converted into the Seawise University, she probably would’ve made it into the present day. I’m glad QE is still loved and not forgotten. She may be gone, but she’s forever living in our hearts and still sailing in the oceans of our memories. Stellar work, Alex. Can’t wait to see what ocean liner content you have planned next.
I was on the QE in 1968 during Eastertime when I was 11. My parents took me on what was supposedly her final voyage. It was wonderful to be sailing on her. Met very nice people at our large dining table. Got on the tender to go ashore in Nassau, Bahamas. I wore a striped sleeveless striped dress and straw hat for Easter and got picked to pose in a flamingo show while there. The ship's food was great, lots to do on board, even for a kid back then. I made sure to hit the swimming pool at least once. Sad to see how she went down later on.
The sad thing is that Queen Elizabeth did not live to this day she was a wonderful ship and deserved the same faith as her sister Queen Mary i both a very rare book done when Queen Elizabeth was made with rare pictures she was in deed wonderful thank you for posting this documentary.

Excellent video. Well researched and presented. Some liners are only forgotten by people who don't have a passion for these ships. As an ocean liner fan I read and watch as much as possible of the amazing ships. The QE was a beautiful ship and I greatly enjoyed your video. You are truly an "Ocean Liner" fan.

I was also fortunate enough to spend the night on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. This presentation was very well illustrated. Thank You Again.
My mother travelled to New York and back with my grandparents on the QE in 1965. They took their Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III with them too, hoisted onto the ship and offloaded in New York. They had the same suite Richard Burton had just vacated on the previous crossing and mother struck up a friendship during the outbound crossing with the actor Tab Hunter. the trip remained with her the rest of her life. It really was a different era.
Absolutely amazing video Alex. The work you put in to this is outstanding. It’s like for a short moment you brought her back to life and I could feel her presence. All of that history and all of the work that was but in to building her is so sad to be lost to time but she lives in anyone who takes the time to look her up and do some research on her. i do have one of the 5000 Parker pens made from the brass from the bridge of the RMS Queen Elizabeth. It was a great ship & I saw it on fire when I was young. I am glad that I now own a piece of it!

Thank you! Yes I remember when the new owners took over the building in Torrance, CA, they weren't even sure what the artifacts were. Me and my colleagues were so proud when they contacted QMI Restore the Queen to ask about the letters and their history. My friend Steve, and myself had prepared an email that explained the history of the ship and how the artifacts got to that building. Suddenly the new owners were very proud of their treasure and expressed their desire to preserve the artifacts for future visitors. They're really wonderful people.

Excellent Job on this documentary. It is a shame what happened to the QE but she will never be forgotten. I just built an airfix Queen Elizabeth to go with my Revell Queen Mary.
I lived in Hong Kong and had a keen interest in this ship. The wreck was not entirely removed. Much of the keel and boilers are there next to Container Terminal 9. It is still marked on sae charts of the area as “foul” meaning don’t try to anchor there. There is a memorial to the ship at the Aberdeen Boat or Yacht club because some parts were recovered by a dredger including the fire warning chart which was made of bronze I believe. It’s visible in one of the shots in this video when Queen Elizabeth was visiting the bridge.
Wow that replacement looks like a foreshadowing of what happened in 1983.. especially cause two vessels similar to that profile saved Cunard! The Saga Sisters turned Cunard from a low budget cruise line with the QE2 to a luxury brand again! Great work as always Alex!
After this, I think now is a good time to try and get back to watching you more often. Echoing what others have said, this was probably the best-done presentation on the history of the Queen Elizabeth that I have ever seen, and that's saying something, since I've also seen Big Old Boats video on her which was equally incredible. Even now I still learned more tidbits about this magnificent liner than before, including the fire. I don't remember if I ever heard that there were 5 separate fires which started, but as soon as you mentioned that specifically, my mind went from _'there's a chance it was arson'_ to _'it probably was arson.'_ 5 separate fires in 5 separate areas can't be an accident. It's a darn shame that she's no longer with us today.
I was privileged to have done a five day Atlantic crossing on the QE from New York to Southampton via Cherbourg in 1964. One of my beautiful memories….💃🕺dancing in the piano bar until the early hours of the morning and then watching the sunrise from a deck ❤
Hi Alex, as you know I have two very nice scratchbuilt models of the Queen Mary and Elisabeth. They are in the same scale and were built by the same hand with the same technique. They are relatively accurate and not fancy. But it is difficult for me to have a preference on a particular model. I love them both and cannot be separated. 😍
I attended Dulwich College Preparatory School from 1946-1949. One day we had a speech by the father of one of my fellow pupils telling us what it was like to be the captain of the Queen Elizabeth I still remember him describing how it was to buy enough food to feed 5000 people for 2 weeks.
Bravo, Alex! VERY well done, and informative! I talked with some of QE and QM's designers when they were on QM in 1993, and it was explained to me that QE could never "quite" match QM's speed, due to the added mass on the later ship. The propulsive power of QE was almost identical, and she had more to push. QE's propeller blades were lengthened to give more surface area (which I had never heard before) but QM would always be lighter and therefore slightly (and unimportantly) faster. QE is such a beautiful and fascinating ship to those of us who know and love "our" Queen. She is familiar, but also different. How I wish I could have known her! She is the only Cunard Queen I haven't stepped aboard...and I never will. It is heartbreaking. Thanks for this wonderful documentary! PS if that bank doesn't want those letters and the anchor (which I have visited), I know a very good place in Long Beach where they would be welcome!
Lol thank you! Actually Steve and I were the ones that told the new bank building owners about the QE artifacts, they had requested information. They were really proud to be the new owners and expressed a great interest in their restoration (which is currently in the planning stages). As part of our positions at QMI Restore the Queen at the time, we did offer for QMI to move the artifacts to Queen Mary, but the owners wanted to keep them in Torrance.
15:29 ....and that photo is of the entrance into Sydney's harbour. There were submarine nets in place by that stage. The Queens were called the 'Grey Ghosts' and my grandfather told me of seeing both of them in Sydney a few times. The famous ''Rats of Tobruk'' legend began with a trip one of the Queens.
I sailed on QE2 three times and Captain Warwick often expressed his admiration for the first Queen Elizabeth. I am fortunate enough to have sailed on QE3 from Singapore to Dubai.
In the late 1950's I crossed the Atlantic with my parents from New York to Southampton. I was 18 months at the time. I have a picture of me at the Childrens Teatime in the first-class dining room.

If _only_ she had stayed in Port Everglades, how differently history would’ve played out! She was robbed of an amazing future she could’ve had, and we would have had both Queens gracing either side of the US seaboard. Even though it’s just a man made ship, it’s still so heartbreaking and makes you yearn for what could have been. I also like to imagine what it would be like if both the Lusitania and Mauretania had been saved.
Port Everglades was just as much a dead end for her as Hong Kong was. In Florida, she couldn't fully open because she was deemed a fire hazard, the company that operated her didn't have the money to redo the electrical system, and no other companies wanted to purchase a fire hazard. Cunard had regained control of the ship, but if it wasn't for Mr. Tung, she would have ended up being sold for scrap. Not to mention, the tropical climate of Florida was rapidly deteriorating the ship, both inside and out.

They were sisters that helped each other and both pulled their weights... the only difference was ultimately circumstances and politics.

My mother came to America on the Queen Elizabeth on her first voyage back in service. My mother never forgot that voyage, she passed at 92 years old.

i am old enough to remember both these magnificent ships sailing along the Solent between the Isle of Wight and the mainland going in and out of Southampton, the beauty and grace of these ships is unsurpassed modern ships even dare i say it the newish Queen Mary2 with its nod to the lines of the old liners cannot match them , on a foggy morning to hear there ships horns booming across the water from the shore in Lee on the Solent would send shivers down my spine .

Great presentation, videos like this help preserve her legacy! and I totally agree with your statement at 28:20, there seems to be a growing love for the QE, there is a guy making a massive lego model of her for example, I would recommend checking it out if love the Elizabeth!
I never really cared for the Lizzy, always overshadowed by the Queen Mary. But the Elizabeth has grown on me, to the point I now prefer her over her sister, fantastic ship! Do you have any more details on that model you mentioned? thanks

I wish I had visited the Queen Mary when I visited California last month. I love the Art Deco designs. An Unsolved Mysteries show and a Poirot episode were filmed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It's said the Queen Mary has ghosts. That's on my bucket list to visit this ship and get some In and Out Burger while I'm there.

Alex, this definitely one of your best productions to date! You told the story of the RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH in the best way possible. I was brought to tears as you read aloud, the letter sent from the secretary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother to CY Tung on the loss of the ship. It is only natural that many of us have our "favorite" between both Queens... and I will admit that QUEEN MARY will always be my favorite... but that certainly does not mean that I have any less appreciation or respect for the history and beauty of QE. I only wish I had had the chance to experience QE in person. She was lost on January 9th, 1972... and I was born on November 23rd... just a few months too late! 😀

My Granny`s younger brother George Guy Morris was a Cunard Commodore.Can vividly remember him describe docking in New York without the benefit of tugs because of a strike or racing the SS United States.The guy had bags of charisma and a parrot with a nasty vocabulary.
I do love RMS Queen Elizabeth, but I’m still tied to RMS Queen Mary. Though, I am just as fascinated by her history as I am with Queen Mary’s. If the QE had been a successful floating hotel or if she hadn’t caught fire while being converted into the Seawise University, she probably would’ve made it into the present day. I’m glad QE is still loved and not forgotten. She may be gone, but she’s forever living in our hearts and still sailing in the oceans of our memories. Stellar work, Alex. Can’t wait to see what ocean liner content you have planned next.

I was on the QE in 1968 during Eastertime when I was 11. My parents took me on what was supposedly her final voyage. It was wonderful to be sailing on her. Met very nice people at our large dining table. Got on the tender to go ashore in Nassau, Bahamas. I wore a striped sleeveless striped dress and straw hat for Easter and got picked to pose in a flamingo show while there. The ship's food was great, lots to do on board, even for a kid back then. I made sure to hit the swimming pool at least once. Sad to see how she went down later on.

The sad thing is that Queen Elizabeth did not live to this day she was a wonderful ship and deserved the same faith as her sister Queen Mary i both a very rare book done when Queen Elizabeth was made with rare pictures she was in deed wonderful thank you for posting this documentary.

My mother travelled to New York and back with my grandparents on the QE in 1965. They took their Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III with them too, hoisted onto the ship and offloaded in New York. They had the same suite Richard Burton had just vacated on the previous crossing and mother struck up a friendship during the outbound crossing with the actor Tab Hunter. the trip remained with her the rest of her life. It really was a different era.
Absolutely amazing video Alex. The work you put in to this is outstanding. It’s like for a short moment you brought her back to life and I could feel her presence. All of that history and all of the work that was but in to building her is so sad to be lost to time but she lives in anyone who takes the time to look her up and do some research on her. She was majestic and elegant in her time and I wish we could visit her like I did the Queen Mary. Keep up your amazing work. It has not gone unnoticed. Cheers from Canada.

i do have one of the 5000 Parker pens made from the brass from the bridge of the RMS Queen Elizabeth. It was a great ship & I saw it on fire when I was young. I am glad that I now own a piece of it!

Thank you! Yes I remember when the new owners took over the building in Torrance, CA, they weren't even sure what the artifacts were. Me and my colleagues were so proud when they contacted QMI Restore the Queen to ask about the letters and their history. My friend Steve, and myself had prepared an email that explained the history of the ship and how the artifacts got to that building. Suddenly the new owners were very proud of their treasure and expressed their desire to preserve the artifacts for future visitors. They're really wonderful people.

I lived in Hong Kong and had a keen interest in this ship. The wreck was not entirely removed. Much of the keel and boilers are there next to Container Terminal 9. It is still marked on sae charts of the area as “foul” meaning don’t try to anchor there. There is a memorial to the ship at the Aberdeen Boat or Yacht club because some parts were recovered by a dredger including the fire warning chart which was made of bronze I believe. It’s visible in one of the shots in this video when Queen Elizabeth was visiting the bridge.

Wow that replacement looks like a foreshadowing of what happened in 1983.. especially cause two vessels similar to that profile saved Cunard! The Saga Sisters turned Cunard from a low budget cruise line with the QE2 to a luxury brand again! Great work as always Alex!

Thanks for this great overview of these two great ships. I remember visiting the Queen Mary in the early fifties, a day out to be remembered.
After this, I think now is a good time to try and get back to watching you more often. Echoing what others have said, this was probably the best-done presentation on the history of the Queen Elizabeth that I have ever seen, and that's saying something, since I've also seen Big Old Boats video on her which was equally incredible. Even now I still learned more tidbits about this magnificent liner than before, including the fire. I don't remember if I ever heard that there were 5 separate fires which started, but as soon as you mentioned that specifically, my mind went from _'there's a chance it was arson'_ to _'it probably was arson.'_ 5 separate fires in 5 separate areas can't be an accident. It's a darn shame that she's no longer with us today.
I was privileged to have done a five day Atlantic crossing on the QE from New York to Southampton via Cherbourg in 1964. One of my beautiful memories….💃🕺dancing in the piano bar until the early hours of the morning and then watching the sunrise from a deck ❤

Hi Alex, as you know I have two very nice scratchbuilt models of the Queen Mary and Elisabeth. They are in the same scale and were built by the same hand with the same technique. They are relatively accurate and not fancy. But it is difficult for me to have a preference on a particular model. I love them both and cannot be separated. 😍

I attended Dulwich College Preparatory School from 1946-1949. One day we had a speech by the father of one of my fellow pupils telling us what it was like to be the captain of the Queen Elizabeth
I still remember him describing how it was to buy enough food to feed 5000 people for 2 weeks.
I sailed three times on this ship,(QE1) including her last voyage to New York. Had my first ever taste of champagne on her at 8 years old. :-)
Bravo, Alex! VERY well done, and informative! I talked with some of QE and QM's designers when they were on QM in 1993, and it was explained to me that QE could never "quite" match QM's speed, due to the added mass on the later ship. The propulsive power of QE was almost identical, and she had more to push. QE's propeller blades were lengthened to give more surface area (which I had never heard before) but QM would always be lighter and therefore slightly (and unimportantly) faster. QE is such a beautiful and fascinating ship to those of us who know and love "our" Queen. She is familiar, but also different. How I wish I could have known her! She is the only Cunard Queen I haven't stepped aboard...and I never will. It is heartbreaking. Thanks for this wonderful documentary! PS if that bank doesn't want those letters and the anchor (which I have visited), I know a very good place in Long Beach where they would be welcome!

Actually Steve and I were the ones that told the new bank building owners about the QE artifacts, they had requested information. They were really proud to be the new owners and expressed a great interest in their restoration (which is currently in the planning stages).
As part of our positions at QMI Restore the Queen at the time, we did offer for QMI to move the artifacts to Queen Mary, but the owners wanted to keep them in Torrance.
15:29 ....and that photo is of the entrance into Sydney's harbour. There were submarine nets in place by that stage. The Queens were called the 'Grey Ghosts' and my grandfather told me of seeing both of them in Sydney a few times. The famous ''Rats of Tobruk'' legend began with a trip one of the Queens.
I sailed on QE2 three times and Captain Warwick often expressed his admiration for the first Queen Elizabeth. I am fortunate enough to have sailed on QE3 from Singapore to Dubai.

In the late 1950's I crossed the Atlantic with my parents from New York to Southampton. I was 18 months at the time. I have a picture of me at the Childrens Teatime in the first-class dining room.

If _only_ she had stayed in Port Everglades, how differently history would’ve played out! She was robbed of an amazing future she could’ve had, and we would have had both Queens gracing either side of the US seaboard. Even though it’s just a man made ship, it’s still so heartbreaking and makes you yearn for what could have been. I also like to imagine what it would be like if both the Lusitania and Mauretania had been saved.
Port Everglades was just as much a dead end for her as Hong Kong was. In Florida, she couldn't fully open because she was deemed a fire hazard, the company that operated her didn't have the money to redo the electrical system, and no other companies wanted to purchase a fire hazard. Cunard had regained control of the ship, but if it wasn't for Mr. Tung, she would have ended up being sold for scrap. Not to mention, the tropical climate of Florida was rapidly deteriorating the ship, both inside and out.
