    Isn’t the big deal about ARRI cameras the colors from the sensor and it’s processing, not the fact that it captures RAW like plenty can?

Given what modern cameras can do and post-processing software Magic Lantern for me just wasn't/isn't worth the headache. For those interested in the EOS M do keep in mind the lenses make a huge difference in the results you can get.

    The Canon wins, when you consider the performance from something so cheap & compact.
    You would definitely expect image quality & features on something that costs $66k, to be superior.. but another thing is that the $66k doesn’t include the thousands more in “accessories”.. such as a monitor for seeing what you are shooting (cos you can’t be expecting them to include that, for ONLY $66k).

    How does the "upgraded" Eos M square off against the more modern competitors in a similar price range? i.e. if I have $ 300-400 to invest in a camera with video in mind, am I better off just getting an Eos M or an used recent camera (the usual names that come around in this range)?
    Also, wouldn't it be better to install Lantern on an Eos 5d mk ii/iii which seems to be a better camera overall? Thanks!

    • @8lec_R
      @8lec_R Год назад +2

      You have no camera that can shoot raw video until you get to 1300 bucks. The bmpcc4k.
      If you need raw video then there's nothing for cheap unless you want to count the original bmpcc, but that has a small sensor and even smaller battery (and some other issues).
      If you are lucky you may be able to get a gh4 for ~400 but those are kinda rare.
      I can't comment on the 5d since I've never used that
      The issue with this price range is there's very few good cameras below 700 dollars. Raw video on the EOS M is so killer (as it allows you to significantly change the colour and WB) that it beats out everything that doesn't have at least 13 bits of dynamic range, and a 10 bit codec. Which means you're looking at cameras well above 700 bucks.
      But that's just my personal opinion

    • @SRFreneekitty
      @SRFreneekitty Год назад

      @@8lec_R how long can it record raw?

    • @8lec_R
      @8lec_R Год назад +3

      @@SRFreneekitty it depends on the mode. If shooting at the default resolution 1736×1158 you can shoot as long as you have space and juice (storage and battery)
      The 5k anamorphic at full resolution is not very stable at for long recordings because the data rate is too high. The EOS M cannot handle anything above 65MBps (the card reader and CPU get overwhelmed and recording stops) without issues. Sometimes you'll be able to record for hours. Other times the recording will stop after a few seconds. Obviously there's a difference, if you shoot at 67MBps then the likelihoods of recording stopping is quite low. Above 71MBps you're very likely to be only able to shoot static shots or risk the recording stopping after the buffer is full.
      So yea for most modes you need to reduce bit depth from 14 bit to 10 or 12. And reduce the resolution if you wanna shoot for long

    i know this is now a year old, but since then the crop mood version of magic lantern has come out, and a whole lot of the 'buginess' of Magic Lantern has been resolved. Personally, I now love my two eos m cameras with ML on them. But the main point here is like comparing apples to oranges, I paid 100 bucks for my cameras. Some of us just can't afford high end stuff, even if it's used, but no matter what camera you use, a lot of computing power and costs go into the editing side, and lenses also. Also, the eos m is an aps-c , not a super 35 sensor as stated.

    The main bonus of the 14bit ML compared to ARRI is that the EOS M can capture real blacks very similar to celluloid. That is what really makes the difference and also the unmached colors that the guys managed to pull off with the MLVApp. Even the newest ARRI 35 cannot capture the blacks like the EOS M which is really a pitty. I used ML on 5DM3 years ago, and honestly the image was really good, but it was a bit buggy, unreliable, problem with dropping frames while recording to SD cards. Using other software to compile the CDNG. It was a pain so I just moved to black magic cameras.
    Miss the full frame sometimes, but if I was looking for budget full frame, with raw output, I’d probably consider the Sigma FP.
    In the end I think that Canon M, isn’t bad for someone that wants something cheap to play around with a bit, but for people that want to do more than that, the workflow will probably become a problem. Unless Magic lantern has improved that work flow aspect in the last 3 years, I haven’t kept up with it.

    • @robert18productions
      @robert18productions Год назад +3

      LOG is a different type of gamma curve intended to capture as much dynamic range as possible compared to the standard (stills) picture profile. It is baked into the footage. RAW on the other hand, rather than a baked in image, is just the data from the sensor. This allows for a greater degree of post production editing, like the ability to change the white balance in post. The best way to think about RAW video is RAW photos vs JPGs. They are very similar concepts. The only thing that RAW and LOG share in common are that they are both used for the same purpose to get as much dynamic range and as much freedom in post production as possible.

      The developers are not making a living at creating hacked firmware overlays for any camera. So it's a matter of availability of the cameras to people doing this as a hobby or labor of love. Without a profit motive, or an incoming stream of cash or sacrificial hardware, they can't possibly buy every camera on the market you might want to use. Reverse engineering all the internals of these cameras takes skill and time that not many people have. This kind of thing is completely against the terms of service for using most cameras, and the manufacturers don't license or provide a developers kit to encourage this sort of thing. Some cameras have more complex internals than others. The relative simplicity of Canon's ASIC, and high availability is why ML seems to have builds for several Canon cameras and few for others. So if you are good at writing machine level code for undocumented ASICs I am sure the magic lantern team would be delighted to have fresh blood write overlays for many more cameras. If you can't do that, then maybe consider financial support for the magic lantern project, or donate your camera to them for analysis.

    2.5k looks so much better on the EOS-M. The sharpness makes the EOS-M look bad in this video.

      The Arri is superior in every way in terms of image quality, but he either doesn't know how to use the ML and eos M or deliberately took bad shots to make the difference seem even more drastic. The new ML Crop Mood gives very good footage and is much more stable and reliable in operation.

    Dude ... why eos M??? 5dmk2 or 3 is much better at that. And costs also 200. Maybe a little more for mk3... eos M is a bad camera to begin with. 5d2 or 3 have were actualy at least profesional cameras that produce nice image. That would be a much better comparisson.
    Still. It is interesting to see the comparison :D

    It's not really honest to show the Canon EOS M with the ARRI logo on it in the miniature. I get the point of the video, but again, is not really honest to suggest you will show a compact ARRI camera here

    I went down the Eos M rabbit hole. Did the ML hack and got a bunch of standard and old film lenses.
    My conclusion,
    This camera with the ML hack is terrible (terrible is an understatement)
    1. The rolling shutter is so slow that doing any camera movement is a non starter (So tripod or super steady hands only)
    2. Buggy (NEVER TAKE THIS TO A PAID SHOOT)
    3. In most modes you would be interested in the viewfinder is unusable
    4. The video quality is terrible
    5. Any iso over 200 is noisy (Over 500 is unusable)
    (Just becouse it says 5K does not mean it is.)
    Bottom line - Only get this to shoot short 1-3min clips for you to experiment with and get your feet wet using Raw video so later you can get something like a used Black magic production or cinema camera which is a $500 purchase.
    Sure it is cheap but if you value your time pass on this.
    - Rent a better camera to get your feet wet working with Raw cinema video) You will resell the eos M so fast it will be like a rental anyway.
