It’s amazing how Kirk is 54 here and already lived a full life. He then almost doubled his age here. It’s incredible. Like that saying you only live once. With Kirk he sure did live twice.

I love these classic interviews with these legends, the likes of which we'll never see again. Kirk is funny, humble, honest, sincere and mesmerizing all at once. A true legend. If anything let's this interview down, I have to say is Dick himself, he tries to be funny but it comes across as sarcastic. In the Richard Burton interview he is a lot more sincere, and that's my favourite interview. We're so lucky that we can watch these time capsules over and over again, and relive a by gone era.

Dick Cavett is 5'6". He is up to something when he is asking the great Kirk Douglas about his height because the audience has had a chance to see them both standing earlier in the show, and while Douglas is taller, he is not that much taller. Anyway, it is a very enjoyable watch. Dick Cavett is not unknown in the UK, but mostly by those who know their US cultural history well. Russell Harty, in UK, perhaps comes closest to him as similarly articulate, but Cavett is better. Such an interesting period the late 60s early 70s: one golden age in cinema coming to an end, another (Scorcese, Altman etc) just about to begin.
