    Hi Alec. Hope your doing well in these trying times. I miss the regular output of your Tec tips and reviews, or better put " opinions" of various items or techniques on diving. As a veteran diver I realize you have a lot of knowledge to share with us and your shared opinion, "and I'm certain I speak for the majority of your viewers" respect your outlook. So thanks for doing what you can as far as getting these videos out there for us. Trippel Thumbs up to you.

    Excellent review. I have always wondered about them. They appear to be a much-cheaper-priced Chinese knockoff. I own two Spare Airs. I mostly use them while on my boat for checking my boat anchor to be sure it will hold or to unsnag it when I am not planning a scuba dive. I consider them a scuba "toy" because they don't hold more than 5 to 8-minute's worth of air at 4 to 6-feet underwater.

      You hit the purpose of these right on the head. I wanted to educate divers that these exist and have a limited scope. Some divers think they are primary scuba tanks, NOT. If you can't stand up your going too deep.

    Hello Alex!
    Not related question if you please. How do you think is it good idea to buy thin wetsuit (Lycra) to wear it under rent neoprene? Or neoprene wetsuit must be close to your skin? May I overheat with 2 wetsuits on?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  4 года назад +3

      A rash guard under a wetsuit is a good idea. Pulling a wetsuit on is much easier and you don't loose the warmth as the rash guard (lycra) is very thin. It should not cause overheating as the warmth from a rash guard is very little. Give it a try and don't forget the nylon socks to make pulling full height boots (5 to 7mm) much easer too.

    Guys relax a little bit, Alec made a separate videos describing that this little scuba unit isn’t safe for an out-of-air situation. It’s just for a little fan. Also several guys mentioned that you fill it from your tank. Obviously you only do that if you are not going to go diving with your normal gear but want to have some fan on the shore, otherwise you ask the dive center to fill it for you. Spare Air and similar devices never took-off in diving because they’re simply too small to make a safe ascent in an emergency. However, it is still better than nothing if you ever find yourself in one of those bad situations and your dive buddy is nowhere to be found...

    I've bought this item (Dedepu 1L), and used it in the swimming pool (1.5m) twice. It lasted me almost up to 10 min. The feeling is still wired to me as I'm new to scuba. I could fill it with the manual pump to 3000PSI, it took (1500 cycles)🤔, yet it works, took me 3 sessions over 2hrs.
    My concern is whether the air that comes out of the manual pump through this fitting is safe, or kind of unhealthy? How often should I change the filters? Is there special oil I should use to lube the pump?
    The pump comes well oiled, is that oil safe to breath?
    I'm still testing the set, and improving my usage. Once I find out anything interesting, I'll be telling you here, thanks.
    One more thing, I've emptied the tank totally while swimming. I herd you saying that's wrong, so should I do anything to counter effect that?

    I see this being good for free divers as a panic button

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  3 года назад

      I'm no expert but the free divers I see carry nothing. But a buddy should have an emergency air device just in case.

    • @urbaniv
      @urbaniv 2 года назад +1

      That wouldn't work for us. If you run out of air you black out without any warning. So you can use the "panic button" That happens only close to the surface and than we float up our buddy turns us around everything is good.
      If you actually panic down deep and you'd carry that you suddenly breath compressed air. That means you have to ascend like you scuba divers do. We know nothing about that and would most likely damage our lungs.
      And even if you know how to ascend it's not much air anyway.
      Carrying that as free diver would be very dangerous

    • @cracka5431
      @cracka5431 2 года назад

      @@urbaniv honestly it wouldn't be dangerous with some basic knowledge. And could be useful for safety

    • @urbaniv
      @urbaniv 2 года назад

      @@cracka5431 not really. Especially because freedivers don't run out of air down below. That just never happens. You black out shortly below the surface (in the last 10 meters) or after you break through the surface. Never below. You don't run out of air like in scuba diving. If you run out of air you just do from one second to the other without any warning. So no this bottle is useless and would only do harm because you'd start panicking and think you have air so you let out your last air. And than down below you breath in new air at this specific pressure. Etc

    • @cracka5431
      @cracka5431 2 года назад +1

      @@urbaniv I've been freediving for almost 10 years. So I have some experience. Shallow water blackout is cause by a lack of oxygen to the brain due to the pressure difference as you near the surface from a deep dive which draws oxygen from your blood.
      I've saved one of my mates lives because he pushed his limits on a deep dive. Shallow water black out never occurs unless you've gone beyond your ability in deep water. By having a few breaths before ascending you would eliminate shallow water black out.

  • @stefanroverts963

    You call it a sort of spare air, however it is not and only for shallow waters.

    • @aevans692
      @aevans692 4 года назад

      "Spare air" , is a brand name, and make small systems like this , and has almost become a generic term for such small systems as they were the only ones making them ... 🤦🏻‍♂️ this unit is pretty much identical as the one made by spare air and at a fraction of the cost , I have been looking at them recently ..

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  4 года назад +1

      It is a clone of the the famous SpareAir (40 years old now), used by many divers and others for fun, shallow dives. If used like SpareAir as a redundant air supply, its max depth is around 60' to safely surface slowly in an Out Of Air emergency. Like any toy or scuba gear, read the instructions and follow them. Thanks for watching Stefan.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  4 года назад +1

      As these are not actually scuba diving tanks, they don't require the same annual VIS and hydro test. If used a lot, maybe not a bad idea to get it visually checked every few years. As for service, other than an tank valve o-ring, nothing really you can do to these sealed units unless they actually stop working.

  • @timgosling6189
    @timgosling6189 4 года назад +1

    Experienced Scuba divers surely do not need this; you can only fill it from your Scuba cylinder, you're therefore not altering the amount of gas you take underwater, and a reserve is what you set on your dive computer. If you need an independent reserve you'll have a stage or a pony with a proper reg. For unqualified, including children's use, it will give a few minutes fun at shallow depth but I would not be happy seeing it used at more than say 10 feet. Breath holding from just 30 feet can cause serious lung injury. By the way Alec, is it a demand reg mouthpiece? It looked like you were pressing the purge to breath.

      I'm just doing a review here as requested!
      For the record, I'm also not a fan of pony bottles either, although I've used them on occasion.
      I AM a fan of planning your dive carefully including air supply and watching your air pressure throughout the dive.

      What about divers like myself Tim?
      I work for the government as a Diver, if they can get the job done with a single diver, they will. Obviously I plan each dive meticulously, even moreso when I'm alone, but what if something goes wrong with my gear when I am in a quarry 25m (82 feet) down? It hasn't yet, nor have I ever finished a dive on 0 bar, but it could happen tomorrow.
      One of those may only hold a few breaths at that depth, but that means my body will not be starved of air during an urgent ascent. I can see it's benefits for an emergency backup, albeit with severe limitations.

    • @timgosling6189
      @timgosling6189 4 года назад

      @@diverdaniel5025 I'm sure that as a professional you would never dive without redundancy in all critical parts of your rig, including having a separate bailout bottle and regs. But would you go to Walmart to buy them, given that when/if you actually need to use that redundancy you will be under stress and will want it to work as well as if not better than your primary?
