    Being a musician is bother a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it can help you appreciate music that you listen to more, but on the other hand you realize just how many songs are almost exactly the same. When I started getting more into metal and was learning Iron Maiden songs I started to realize just how many songs use the same chord progression

    • @toro5280
      @toro5280 2 года назад +5

      There's also the Dm, Bb, C, Dm progression (based more or less on the andalusian cadence Dm, C, Bb, A) "Mr. Crowley" is basically Dm, Bb, Dm, Bb, C, Dm, C, Bb, A. Metallica's "The call of Ktulu" starts with Dm, Bb, C, Dm (picked) - same as "Man of sorrows" (strummed). Etc. I rather see it as a blessing than a curse, makes it easier to learn songs.

    • @bassrocks4419
      @bassrocks4419 2 года назад +3

      @@toro5280 when you look at it that way then yeah. I also forgot to mention in my first comment that I’m also a song writer (I mainly write metal songs), and while I do have times where I feel really inspired and write something interesting, I sometimes find it hard to write riffs when so much has been done already. Some chord progressions sound cool when other bands play them, but when I come up with something that has a similar chord progression is just sounds stale and boring, and so I’ll usually just end up scrapping the idea

    • @suppamannnn
      @suppamannnn 2 года назад +6

      every music genre has "standards". songs can be different even if they share the same chord progression, and the maiden catalog is actually a perfect example. It's like saying that raggae songs are all the same because they all use the same kind of rhythmic patterns, or that blues songs are all the same because they are all based on the 12 bar structure

    • @Gaff.
      @Gaff. 2 года назад +2

      Most genres do something like this. Part of the problem with metal is in many cases the chord progression 'is' the song, and it doesn't help that it's all power chords. For a lot of subgenres of metal, a large portion of those songs don't look very interesting on paper, and what makes them enjoyable to people that like them has a lot to do with the passion in or quality of the performance, and in many cases something about 'the sound', whether it be painstakingly selected guitar tones, or something about the production. This could maybe relate to why some of your stuff you're throwing away sounds stale to you even if they sound good when other bands play them. How are you playing these things? Are you playing them loud? Are the faces you're making threatening enough?
      With a band like Maiden, it's a little different as they do often have stuff like lead guitar melodies over the top, so the same chord progression can sound very different. Some of the most widely performed and enjoyed classical music for example uses 90% I and V chords. Granted, you can voice those in interesting ways when you're playing full chords instead of power chords, but a lot of it still comes down to the melodic elements.
      (also, you can just actually play full chords; would be nice if more bands did that)

    - Gallop
    - The same drum beat in every song
    - Guitar harmonies that basically mimic the verse
    - About War, Religion, Hell, books, History, or other forms of media
    - Repeat parts over and over and over until you want to slam your head into a wall
    - At least one “ohhh” in it
    - Repeat one word or phrase over and over in the chorus
    - An acoustic or mellow section somewhere
    - Three or more guitar solos
    - Keyboards being way too high in the mix
    - Be somewhere between 7 minutes and 1,000 years long

    Love Maiden since 1990 and since I play some songs I must agree... But recently I learnt Aces high on the guitar and Rime of the ancient mariner on the bass and they are fucking masterpieces with simple chords progressions. How the progression is built, how Bruce is the game changer there...
    If you play music you know there's quite some truth here. If you don't, you would not imagine, since there are so many aspects...
    Greatest band ever

    Ive been a maiden fan for over 4 centuries and its taken a while to get to the 4 chords of which you speak. Steve was a gobby teenager back then , who was only interested in E..... took the passing of his grandparents before he would even consider C.....been a long slog but worth it.

    Way better than so many bands trying to use zillions of chords just for the sake of music knowlegde and delivering boring 40 minutes songs than a maiden E D C classic (and a ocasional G) with many different melodies and catchy vocal lines, for me that itself its a challenge and they always succeed in doing so. Best heavy metal band of all times.... PERIOD!
