Are Chef Yann's Hand-Made Pizzas at The Gillygate Bar the BEST in York?

- Nikki wanders into a popular York City Centre bar that has just launched their own pizzeria backed by accomplished Chef Yann Gente who has worked at top York restaurant, Meltons.
I was blown over at the quality and flavours packed into the two pizzas I enjoyed. Yann sources his ingredients from the major UK importer of genuine Italian ingredients.
The Gillygate Pub is a great place to drop in for a superb Neapolitan-style pizza that is miles ahead of other pizzas I have tasted in the past 10 years. The bar is welcoming and also has a number of evening events. It is well worth a visit and everyone I met there was quite lively in a friendly sort of way and being a single older woman on her own, I was made to feel welcome and felt very safe indeed.
The customers were intrigued by the camera and me talking into it and wanted to know all about my channel and RUclips, so you will see one or two comical interruptions.
In all, I paid £5 for my two half pints of beer and £12 for the Salmone pizza.
Would I go back to the Gillygate to try other items off their menu? I sure will and if you fancy, I can film it again. Next time, I might go into the dog-friendly side bar I went in first of all in my video - it might have be quieter for filming hahaha.
The Gillygate Bar also has bookable rooms at reasonable prices and the guests I met in the pub said they were very smart and well-priced, so if you are visiting York, I have put a link below to their booking site. They are less than a mile from York Minster. If I go back, I might ask to see the rooms and report back on those too bearing in mind I ran an award winning B&B in York myself for 9 years.

I fear it will be sometime before we get monetised, so if you enjoy my videos and would like to help support this channel, even as a one-of, it will enable me to widen my food and equipment range for improved content. So, it would be great if you might think to Buy me a Coffee and I will love you forever!
Many thanks in advance.

I am sad to report that in early January 2025, Jann Gente decided to return to France with his girlfriend and so for now, the Gillygate Bar currently are not selling pizzas. I will call in sometime in January and discover what new exciting food offer that thry have in store for 2025. I will keep you posted.
Incredible video. Never change Nikki, amazing sense of humour, you are so loved.
You're the best!
Merry Christmas beautiful Nikki. I hope Santa brings you everything on your wishlist. 😊
Thank you! You too! My past undiagnosed ADHD has always meant Christmas has been an overload challenge and these days, I tend to withdraw a little after I share the 2 days prior to the 25th with my daughter. I totally enjoyed the 25th on my own, strangely going through some of my hard drives to release some extra storage. It is amazing how much space each of these videos takes up on my system.
Nikki, you handled the folks trying to be your co stars very well and the pizza looked fabulous- congratz on another great review
It was indeed an exceedingly good pizza and I will be popping in to sample Chef Yann's Festive Version. He has told me the ingredients and it is as close to genuine Neapolitan pizza as possible with all bar one ingredient coming from Italy.
I had Davinci Resolve on Full Voice Isolation throughout the video and I the level of editing was challenging indeed but everyone was great to talk to if a little animated - clue :I can also get animated with my ADHD at times too! Maybe my being there generated more fun but I imagine the pub would make for a wonderful Christmas Eve afternoon/early evening drinkalong-thon (if that is a word). Indeed, I am looking forward to going back to the Gillygate without my camera since they have some great live music sessions there.
fantastic! Those pizzas looked amazing!
They were. You saw that I took 2 of the slices home and had them for my supper. Delicious even cold.
What a bangin review Nikki. Those pizzas 🍕 looked delicious. You actually fell on your feet there with the pizza being dropped. It ment you could sample BOTH recommendation’s. Kev was gas. Very friendly pub that. You all seemed to have a ball. You’ll definitely have to review that Sunday roast bap for £7! Wow that’s cheap. Great review pet. 👍
Thank you Philip. I always seem to evoke friendship in people I meet along the way and the lovely people in the bar were keen to know more about how and why I set up the channel and wanted to play some part in the video.
It is odd that apart from Danny at RateMyTakeaway, none of the other UK meal reviewers ever seem to end up engaging with their fellow diners or drinkers and I am wondering if there is something I am lacking, other than a burly minder, or have got that make my presence such a magnet for conversation whether I ask for it or not.
I might be checking out the 'Bap Butcher' from Haxby tomorrow.
Loved the pub and banter.
Pizza and Beer looked awesome.
Lovely staff.
9.5/10 highly recommended.
I've knocked 0.5 off as I'd have liked the review to be longer.
Very pleased I have found your channel as I think is great!.
Thank you Nigel. Believe it or not, I was in The Gillygate for over 90 minutes but the lively banter was decidedly fruity in parts which made for a very enjoyable and entertaining experience but the language might have got me in trouble with the YT Police. I did however leave some of the best bits in the video. I watched the video on RUclips earlier and I could not stop laughing at the stories being retold my some of the customers in the bar.
I only knocked 0.5 off the review score for the pizza because the Chef, Yann has only be at The Gillygate for a few weeks and he hasn't got round to putting the pizzas on wooden boards or plates. It doesn't affect the richness of the pizzas and is only a decorative thing really.
Yann has some festive pizzas in store, so if you all fancy me going back there before Christmas to check those out, I shall.
Great review very friendly folk seemed like a lovely pub and pizza looked lovely
Very friendly and lively and great fun to talk to. I could imagine having a great time on Christmas Eve at The Gillygate.
Withdrawal symptoms were kicking in not having a Nikki's Nosh video to watch for 4 whole days. 😢
Nikki, great review as always. Those Pizza's looked great. Incidentally, pizza is my all-time favourite food. Lively but friendly pub, you dealt with the banter very well whilst doing your review.
There are a couple of places I plan to visit on the back of your reviews, this will definitely be one of them.
Good review as always 👍 Cheers mi dear ❤
Well, if you get over to York, you can come with me to The Gillygate and hold my camera or perhaps my coat if I end up in an impromptu arm wrestling match hahahaha.
Give me a shout if you need help with filming.

The best pizza I ever had was a smoked trout pizza from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Those pizzas looked delicious. Really enjoyed this very lively review. Donna
It was indeed lively and apologies if any of the fruity language dodged my very detailed edit. It is a great pub though, me visiting it for the first time, but those pizzas were incredible - probably the best I have ever tasted in my entire 70 years of eating.
@ it was the best review and no apologies needed. It made my morning as I was watching it around 8:00 am here in Texas. Donna
@@DLBass-op2ib its below freezing in the UK so I could do with a dose of your weather right now
@ we had a cold front come in so our temperature is currently 42 degrees with a high today of 75 degrees.
@@DLBass-op2ib Crikey, you have big variations in temperature over a day (5.5C to 24C) . We are getting a cold snap here in the UK with some areas experiencing their first snow of the winter. Night-time temperatures in York have been hitting -6C (21F) and I suspect Scotland has been lower than that.
❤Well done you. Enjoyed this one 😊
Thank you! Cheers! - I note there is new firmware out on the DJI Neo by the way, Trevor.
@ Thank you. They will be constantly doing updates for a while and then ignore it when version 2 comes out LOL
@@flywithmetrevor Indeed. That is what has happened with my DJI Mic1s.
@@NikkisNosh It’s hard to keep up with all the latest tech lol
No such thing as a bad pizza according to my belly! Cheers from California. 😊
Well, I have had some terrible pizzas here in York , so bad I ended up in Accident & Emergency with one of them. hahaha. It was about 6 years ago and I won't ever get a pizza from them again of course. Welcome to the channel, fv. I hope you enjoy my typically British slant on things.
Theakston bitter really nice drink I've not tried the other theakston pizza 🍕 looks nice
When I was a student in the early 70s, we used to go out to the Elvington Arms, in Elvington or Sutton upon Derwent. In those days run by a very old lady but I imagine she was younger than I am now haha. She had a small barrel on the counter behind the bar and if you ordered Theakston's Old Peculier she would turn the tap on the front of the barrel and it would almost drip drip out. It took ages to pour and when ready we would shout and we would get up to get it, one glass at a time! But heck it was lovely.
Just had your video recommended to me and I’m very pleased I decided to watch as this is great! Excellent, informative review and I really like your pleasant, personable style. I only live in Acomb so to have a channel reviewing places so close to me is very handy! I’ve subbed and hope you get lots more subscribers, as based on this you deserve to 😊
Awesome, thank you! You are very kind. So, could you suggest any places in Acomb that I can go to please?
@ The Old Greengrocer on Front Street is definitely worth a visit - I’ve always been impressed with the food there. Worth booking ahead though as it gets busy!
@mattjamesmusicyork and what about Ruby's please?
@ Ruby’s is great too - been for breakfast many times and always enjoyed it. Lovely staff there too and a real sense of community. It’s quite small so I’d recommend getting there for opening, as it fills up quickly!
I now want Pizza lol 😂
Me too. Imagine what it is like watching that video when you are editing it. I get very hungry but atm Old Mother Nikki Hubbard's cupboard is bare. I might have to go do another video later today.
Was it smoked salmon? smoked goes very well on pizza. That one looked good but think i'd want it a bit crispier
Yes, it was smoked salmon. When I paid Yann after I had stopped filming he apologised for the thinner than usual dough. Apparently his pizzas have been so popular that he ran out of his 48hr fermented dough and so I had 24 hour fermented dough. It was still delicious but apparently he has just brought out his festive pizza and so I might be popping in next week to give it a go and will film it of course. Just you mentioning it though had made me hungry lol
Have you noticed I seem unable to spell Neapolitan ? Mind you, I could count on one hand how many times I have had to write that word in my entire life.
During the edit, I had two challenges:
1: Not to bore you and edit out my ADHD ramblings
2: Ensure the fruity language was excised - I think I succeeded even one time something slipped through in the background.
The bar was so lively and the room so warm, you could see my face was getting redder and redder and so I was a bit too hot and bothered to speak the words which were so obvious in my time at The Gillygate - that the food deserved a great rating and the bar deserved an unofficial rating too. I don't think I am competent to allocate a score to a pub, but in future if I do pop into a pub, I shall try to give a quick run-down of the positive points in its favour and whether I would recommend it aka would I go back there.
@@NikkisNosh great idea nowte wrong with telling us if it’s worth poping in for a pint.. and u did well with ur challenges according to my son I hav ADHD aswell infact me him and my wife hav it mildly, as he as looked into cuz he was diagnosed with that and autism, wat great parents we r as we didn’t realise till he had moved out and his partner got him checked over,, anyway enough of me talking about my life, i will be sure to watch any vids u do for us,,, ur happy look on life puts a smile on my face thanx Nikki
