  • HOW TO GRAFT AN AVOCADO TREE
    **Chapters**
    0:00 - Intro, The things you need
    2:31 - The scion preparation
    4:04 - Lets make a wedge graft
    5:12 - The root stock preparation
    6:09 - The connection
    In this episode i demonstrate how easy it is to graft a piece of a known variety (scion) onto a seedling avocado tree( rootstock).
    Most rootstocks are simply seedling trees that are around a year old, although modern practices have developed more complex ways of developing rootstock that are vigorous, more tolerant of poor soil types and more disease resistant.
    The benefits of Grafted trees is that they produce fruit sooner than seedlings, as the scion is genetically the same age as the tree the scion came from (mother tree). Also, the fruit is identical to that mother tree.
    So from one mother tree you can produce many identical trees through grafting techniques.
    There are many benefits of grafting, and anyone can do it. With a little practice you will become a champion grafter in no time.
    So dont throw away those seeds. Plant them, grow them on and create your own supply of rootstock to practice your grafting skills
    Enjoy.

    I did my first graft 3 days ago (August 10), a cold-tolernt Mexican type avocado, "Stewart", which I am growing in Yoakum, Texas, climate zone 9A, and it's approaching it's first year in the ground (2 more months) It has fresh growth, so I got some, about as you've shown, kept it cool a couple of hours as we drove back to Austin, where I have the seedlings on the back patio. I used a fresh #10 blade scalpel to make a careful V, about 3 cm long, into the "Lula" seedling (best rootstock for Texas, by broad consensus, but not cold tolerant much below freezing, being a West-Indian/Guatemalan hybrid). The diameter was the same between scion and seedling, so the whole cambium lined right up, essentially perfectly. I Buddy-Taped it with Japanese label Buddy Tape (cheaper online). I was careful not to touch any cut surface with my (contaminated) fingers, and to rinse the scalpel in tap water after cleaning, then pack it away in a baggie.
    Nothing is dead yet, here inside the sliding glass door to the back. I'm hopeful.
    The odds on this are not so good, I read.

    Because of my inexperience, I overwatered my avocado tree and it died ( or so I thought) from root rot. Months after I stopped watering it I realized that it was actually alive and had started growing up from the very bottom, since the rest of the tree (graft included) is dried. The new branch is about a foot below the grafting. Do I need to graft it again?

I want to graft it to hopefully produce fruit for me indoors, and I understand this cuts the time way down for producing fruit. But where should I get my grafts from? More seeds that I sprout? Hi, very informative. I have a problem grafting Avo's. I have no issues grafting any other type of fruit tree and have about a 90% success rate. I have now tried about 30 avo grafts with a 100% failure rate. not only are my scions failing but, but it is affecting the root stock by killing off the main stem, forcing the young rootstock to bud lower down. What am I doing wrong do you think? thanks Robert in NZ

    • @eatyourgarden
      @eatyourgarden  5 лет назад +1

      Cheers, ok a few things. the scion has to have buds that are swollen. make sure both root stock and scion are active when grafting. DONT over water a newly grafted plant. Spend time to align atleast one side when making the graft. the cambium layer has to meet, if not this will result in the most failures. so scion and rootstook should be as close to the same diameter. Wrap the graft tight. Just keep going with it dont give up

      @@eatyourgarden Hi from Zanzibar I do have the same problem as Robert above. The extra thing with me is I have been noticing a lot of moisture collected itself in the plastic tube covering the scions after the procedure. Still the scions rot. I use tree shed for nursery.

    • @richardmang2558
      @richardmang2558 3 года назад +1

      Yes, the grocery store avocados all give a seed you can use . If you want a very popular seed that is used for root stock then use Zutano avocado seeds. Zutanos grow vigorously and have a high success rate for grafting onto. Even if your graft/scion dies save the rootstock since it will send up another shoot that you will be able to graft onto again.

    What's the reason of grafting avocado tree? I have 4 avocado trees planted from seeds. One was 10, 8 6, & 3 yo. No fruits and or flowers coming out from all of them planted on 20 gallon pots. Any idea why and or what's wrong with my plants?

      theyre seed grown, they can take up to 15years to bear fruit

    The easiest thing I do for cutting while grafting is a quick n simple wax dip to the tip

    My Notes - Summary
    Grafting the avocado - before:
    1. Make sure the buds are swelling - if yes, take a cutting.
    2. Keep in a moist bag if you’re not gonna graft immediately.
    Graft onto a small avocado or other small plant/root stock
    You’ll also Need:
    1. Secateurs or Use a utility knife
    2. Grafting tape - important
    (Like industrial strength cling wrap)
    Process:
    1. On the cutting: Remove the leaves
    (Keep the buds)
    2. to seal in moisture: LOOSLY Wrap the cutting (all except the tip of the base) in grafting tape.
    3. Make cut about an inch long (+-2.5cm)
    (Do it in one slice; Do it on both sides)
    4. Chop off the top of your rooted avo (or other root stock plant)
    5. Cut a wedge in the top of your root stock plant
    (Same length as your grafting piece. )
    6. Tape them up together nice and tightly!
    (NB: keep all air and moisture out.)
    After 3 weeks:
    graft should start taking.
    7. Slowly remove the tape after the three weeks.
    8. Add a label onto your plant,
    name it & Write the date.
    Thank you!

    What's the purpose of grafting this on to a young avocado tree?

    • @juancontreras9725
      @juancontreras9725 3 года назад

      A tree from seed will take 8-15 years to bear fruit. The scion is from a tree that has already fruited. So you'd get fruit in about 3-5 years hope that helps

      @@juancontreras9725 yes it does help. If you are first time grower, what are the ways that you could get your hands on scion from fruited tree? I live in Australia.
