Love watching your videos. 20:37 this is actually real. You don’t realize it’s not good to drive with the back window down until you have a couple of kids back there complaining about being light headed and woozy. Carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke.
I loved this video! That little square to unlock your shifter is in case your battery dies and you have to get towed. They won’t shift from park without power! Thanks for reading the entire manual for us!
'S - mode': Call it a shot in the dark, but I'd say that likely stands for 'Shift Mode' 😉😇. Great video, Chloe. My Tacoma manual sits on the coffee table even now, waiting patiently to realize its full potential. It is my Everest. Seriously, though - your video has solved some perplexities and spurred me to buckle down and read the manual.
"Standard", "Shift", "Sport", and "Sequential" are all good ideas, but Chloe is correct in that Toyota officially just calles it "S-mode" (at least in their manual up through 2022).
I've owned my 2019 now for a while and "re-flashing" the ECU to make the trans shift at better points is highly recommended and works great. I was leery of doing that, but it is a huge benefit and it is safe to do. You can also alter the alternator rate of charge for an AGM battery if you install one, a beneficial upgrade as well.
I bought my Tacoma in July and I heard that humming for the first time in my work shop. I was going nuts trying to figure out where it was coming from😂 I’m glad I know now! Unfortunately I had to have it towed already back to the dealership and the tow truck driver told me what that little slot was for in front of the shifter and showed me this little square thing the dealership put on the key ring to fit the slot. Incase it gets stuck in park. So that was cool to learn. Then another guy showed me the back seat head rest tilt forward incase you want to see out your back windows better without taking them all the way out. He also showed a upgrade he did by putting gas struts for the hood. Then he learned you can take that bar all the in and out if you don’t like the rattling from it. This video has made me want to look through my manual a little better as well🤙🏼
I learned from another channel (The Car Care Nut) that the 'humming' is due to the evap control system check. The check will occur five or more hours after engine shutdown, and only when the fuel tank is more than 1/4 and less than 3/4 full.
Thank you for your professional and informative videos. I have really enjoyed and learned a lot from you. However this is something I think you are missing on a hidden feature of the Tacoma. Which is an umbrella holder. There is a hole where the back seat meets. It is a prefect place to hold a long umbrella for some of us that lives in rainy areas instead of keeping the umbrella on the floor of my truck and in the way of passengers. Try it.
And when folding the seat down remove and store in the underside of the bottom seat. You will see holes for it. Its a pain to do and since I don't take passengers I just removed them.
Great info! I just got my truck last Monday & love it! This is my first Toyota truck so I have a LOT to learn LOL! I got about halfway through that big book and had to stop 🤪 I will keep at it this week. I don’t have the smart key trim but still - lotsa good stuff to know - Thanks! (new sub).
The back window thing is ages old. It’s really a problem on SUV’s and back in the day station wagons. At the rear of the vehicle when you are moving it creates a vacuum. This in turn ‘can’ suck in exhaust fumes. Exhaust at the rear in an suv is worse at this but it is a very real thing in certain vehicles. Toyota is just playing it safe to keep you from passing out while driving and breathing CO2 :)
I only recently discovered your page from doing about 5 weeks of research into the 2023 Tacoma line. After 19 years & 300,000 miles on my 2004 4.7L V8 Tundra Double Cab LTD, TRD, All Weather Package, the frame rot was so bad that my local mechanic wouldn't put it up on his lift anymore for fear that it would break & fall off, which already happened to him once, requiring him to replace his damaged lift. I communicated with four dealerships in two States, looking for a SR, 2.7L 4 cylinder, 6' bed, 4×4 utility version as a replacement for the Tundra. At 73, I decided that I would go from all the "bells & whistles" to NO "bells & whistles", after watching many RUclips channels rave over this model. Even a couple of career Master Diagnostics Technicians like "The Car Care Nut" who has been a Toyota Tech for over 30 years, touted that little 4 cylinder engine as being the most reliable & longest lasting engine & the only engine that Toyota still offers with a totally cast iron engine block. There is testimony of at least one that ran over 1,000,000 miles with proper maintenance. I brought mine home May 25 & have over 1,600 miles on it already. I'm 19 years behind the technology, so I've also spent many hours reading the four manuals that came with the truck. I'm totally happy with the truck so far. That little engine only spins at 1,900 rpm's at 70 mph, whereas the Tundra spun 2,300 at 70 mph. How do they do that? lol
Just brought home my SR with the 2.7l like yours. Gotta say it's my favorite vehicle I've ever driven so far. That "little" 4 pot is noisy but puts out a bit of pep for what it is. I'm glad to hear of someone else who shares in the pain of finding one in the 4x4 configuration. I searched for the past 8 months trying to find one here in the PNW. Finally had to drive to Oregon to buy one. Apparently everyone here in Washington wants to spend 50k for a midsized truck. Rant over. 🤣🤣🤣
Just wanted to say thanks for all of your content. I have watched every one of your videos and they were influential in my purchase; I now have a 2022 Tacoma Trail Edition. You saved me a lot of time and money! Therefore, I am calling you "Chloe Cool", though I am sure that's already been said. Thanks again!!!
All my cars have been used. I never needed an owners manual until my current 2013 vehicle. Found a number of things that weren't obvious. More important for every vehicle I have bought service manuals. If you do things yourself it's a great investment! I like the old paper books but many are now available on CD/DVD and download.
Been using a key around my neck for 50 years. Just make sure you rinse off well all the time. They are $90 dollars now. Good video. Here is one I couldn't find.....when lights are on auto and the headlights are on turn off the truck and they stay on for about 45 seconds, I couldn't find the program to shorten or lengthen the timer. Mybe the the TRD Pro has that feature but the 22 TRD Offroad doesn't.
Adaptive cruise control drives me nuts. Regardless of following distance. So I just hold the button when turning it on to use regular old fashioned cruise control…
Dang girl, I just jumped straight to the maintenance schedule section. I'm also a short Asian girl with a Tacoma TRD 2021. It's perfect for small people that are not 200+ lbs or 6ft tall. My partner is 6ft and she said it's too small for her.
Hi Chloe, I absolutely love that you make these vidoes to help us. I'm curious if you found anywhere in the manual where they recommend how often to change the oil. Every dealership in the Seattle Market has a different option and I want to know what Toyota says? Any info is greatly appreciated.
More: the trans "hunts", often covering several gears, both up and down, incessantly. You can go to S, select, as into manually select gears, and go to a lower gear and stay there, depending on conditions, grade, load, etc. Then go back to D, again depending on if/how conditions have changed. You can also have the rear drives re-geared so the engine always is spinning at higher RPM, going from 3.909 to 4.56, 4.88 or even 5.29 gearing, depending on load, your inclination, larger tires, etc. This will help keep your trans from hunting so much and engaging the PWR/ETC will also help. But you must push the PWR/ETC EVERY time you start up your vehicle.
The 2016-2017 3rd gen turn signal can be altered up to 7 blinks, and the seat belt chime can be turned off. A Toyota dealer must program these options. If they act like they don't know what you're talking about, show them in your owners manual.
I have a request. Can you make a video on how and when to use the Mult-Terrain Treck Systme? I own a 2021 TRD 4x4 Offroad Tacoma and still and am not certain on how to use it. Thanks. I enjoy your content very much, can’t wait for more. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Love the shift pattern. I use D to 4 if I'm on the highway and have to slow down fast. Or in traffic that's like a caterpillar (frequent slowing down) this minimizes my braking.
Hi - another thing you may not know … you don’t need the compass on your watch wristband … you can use the watch itself as a compass. Just point the hour hand at the sun - half way between the hour hand and the 12 noon position (not 12 midnight) is due south.
Great video! I have had my Taco for over 3 years, knew about most of those, but didn't know about the key fob being able to turn off!! Great info I will probably use that now!
To stop the incessant chime when you open the door and need to keep it open, push the spring loaded button in, that is in the door jam, where the door goes home, and the chime will stop.
I didn't know about the transmission shift lock. Thank you. Any ideas on the 120 volt bed outlet quit working. Is there a fuse in the inverter under the right arm rest?
I know why that label: "Capped Bottles Only" was molded into the center console! One Saturday, I spent hours removing the center console on a Mazda sedan and cleaning up the console and the auto-trans. linkage underneath. Somebody had spilled a soft drink and it entered the slot where the trans.lever protrudes through the console!! The works were so gummed up, it was very difficult to move the trans. lever forwards or backwards!
If only you had made short reading 📖 sessions out loud ! I’m sure everyone and I would have loved to listen to you;! That is still my to do list ✅ I have had my off road 23 for a year now! Well all most January. Right now if I want to know or how to do something I just look 👀 at one of your 😎 cool videos thank you so much for them;!!
Ive come up with a technique for interstate driving between cities. Set the following distance to max when you're not near the car in front. Then make it shorter so it doesn't slow down before you're ready to pass.
Thanks for doing what most of us neglect, or are reluctant to doing. While I already knew most of this stuff just by tinkering around with my truck when I first got it, I was disappointed to learn that ECT PWR didn't mean Extra Cool Transformer which would turn your truck into a slick Autobot transformer.

Driving with the back sliding window opened will cause debris and/or exhaust from entering the cab due to the reduced pressure and eddy currents behind the cab.
I don’t have the attention span to read that much so I’m glad you did it for me! Lol Maybe we need a Christmas Chloe story time video where you just read the manual to us! 😆
I read the manual - and the biggest thing I remember from it is that I can change picture on the splash screen so my family shows up when I turn the truck on. Quick question for you - I'm working on installing a switch for my red light bar (I'm a volunteer firefighter) and a couple for my siren. Do you have a source for switches?
Another neat trick with the key fob: Press the LOCK button three times - on the third press, hold the button down until the lights on the vehicle flash. The engine will start shortly thereafter. The engine will shut off automatically after twenty minutes, or when you open the door, or press UNLOCK on the fob. You may need to experiment with the rate of the three presses, and this will not work for older model vehicles. This can be useful to cool or warm your interior - the settings for these functions will remain in the state you left them last you drove.
@@kyleritchie50 that remote connect app, I find it rather sluggish. It is nice however to be warned you forgot to lock your doors and be able to address it from the app.
Hell no! I don’t have the patient to read. I purchased a 2023 Tacoma a month ago and I was only interested in the break in period of the engine, so I only read that part 😬. I’ve been playing with all those buttons to see what they do.
Now my mind is blown about the back window. Keep closed while driving. Open window when not driving ? Why have a back window that opens and closes but not while moving. Makes perfectly good sense to me 😢 Btw fantastic videos. Thanx a million !
The recirculate switch helps you warm up the vehicle faster BUT remember you are also increasing the humidity so your windows will fog. So once things are warm stop recirculating and clear up your windows.
The preset radar setting is too far. I was happy to learn the button on the steering wheel allows you to switch between distances while cruise control is engaged.
Not many people actually read manuals. 20 years in the DoD for Avionics has trained me to be that way with literally everything lol. Engineers don't write these things for nothing. Good things.
"S" mode does NOT act like select shift, however it limits the top final gear to a degree. For example your in hilly country and the dreaded automatic hunting. I'll select 4 or 5 and never allow it to drop into 6th because it always down shifts into 5th or 4th at an 0.1 degree incline! You can down shift it if it's within certain permaiters, however long story short it's not like select a shift, rather a useful feature when you don't want the automatic to constantly changing gears. I have to say being a new 3rd Gen Tacoma owner, this transmission should have only stuck to 5, 6th gear is useless unless your pushing 80+ to keep the rpms above 2.5k. If your just cruising FLAT back roads at 55-70, 6th gear is only at like 1.3k rpm and with littery any increase of throttle it down shifts! If I didn't have to share the truck I would have serusouly considered a manual. They are readily available in my area nobody wants them, all the autos where reserved within a 200 mile radius. However there were probably 10-20 manuals on lots ready for sale
Thanks for reading the manual so I don't have to

Now my mind is blown about the back window. Keep closed while driving. Open window when not driving ? Why have a back window that opens and closes but not while moving. Makes perfectly good sense to me 😢 Btw fantastic videos. Thanx a million !
Hey there...wondering what radio/screen you have in your truck? That doesn't look anything like the OEM one. Thanks kindly!
Capped bottles only is there due to the inverter being underneath
Make a video for everything you learn from the Manuel
more info on the key fob case, please
I believe the "S" in S-mode stands for "Standard" shifting as opposed to automatic.
New Tacoma owner. What is the storage space in the bed next to the power outlet supposed to be used for?
Storage of things that fit in the space. Bungies, rags etc.
ThNks for reading it for us.
The recirculate switch helps you warm up the vehicle faster BUT remember you are also increasing the humidity so your windows will fog. So once things are warm stop recirculating and clear up your windows.
Turn on the AC with the heat set will quickly dry up the humidity and clear the windows plus keeping the interior clean (windows too)
Chloe reading the entire manual and creating this video is why she is the hero we Tacoma owners need but don't deserve
Chloe makes awesome videos. She should make a surfing video because I would like to learn about that too 😉
As always, thank you for everything. Also, who the heck puts groceries behind the back seat?
Great video. Thanks. I never read my '19 manual. Now I do not have to!
Can you do a video on which led lights are best and easy to connect..
Standard … young Jedi.
Glad you did this I can’t read
OK, I"ll do it. Homework for the holidays.
The preset radar setting is too far. I was happy to learn the button on the steering wheel allows you to switch between distances while cruise control is engaged.
Good job. Thanks Chloe
Finally getting wheels, tires and my lift. So excited to get my baby off road
Not many people actually read manuals. 20 years in the DoD for Avionics has trained me to be that way with literally everything lol. Engineers don't write these things for nothing. Good things.
chloe isnt the manual hero we deserve, but the manual hero we need
I’ve noticed this “Check Charging System” error when the key is flipped to ignition and not running, is this normal?
