    Shibuya-kei is a genre of music that emerged in Tokyo, Japan during the 90's, and has gotten forgotten in recent years. I just wanted to show some love to a genre that is underappreciated.

    Shibuya-key is more like a music wave instead a genre itself. It can include different music genres and that’s why we can hear bossa nova, hip hop, pop, electronic and many other genres through bands and groups.
    Good video, keep it up!

      Kinda reminds me of the "Minneapolis Sound" inspired by Prince. It's less of a set in stone genre and more of a movement of funky music that all happens to come from one place :D
      I feel like musical scenes like that are starting to die off in the age of the internet, for better or worse... The last genre I can think of that was specific to the place it was coming from was mid-west emo of all things!

    I'm surprised you haven't mentioned FISHMANS they got pretty popular in the 90's in japan until their frontman Saito passed away. Coaltar of the Deepers is another missed one, they mainly do shoegaze and metal but they've got alot of shibuya-kei tracks as well. I suggest listening to Newave album by COTD if you like shibuya-kei.

    I'm from Indonesia. I really love Shibuya-kei genre, especially the jazzy, bossa-nova vibes like those of Serani Poji, Cymbals, and the early Capsule (Yasutaka Nakata)'s works. And nowadays, there is TWEEDEES. Yes, it's sadly very underrated. But I guess we should be proud to know such hidden gems.

      Indonesian here as well. First discovered Shibuya-kei through Clazziquai Project. Yes I know they're South Korean, but at a time they worked with a lot of Shibuya-kei musicians like Yasutaka Nakata, FPM, Daishi Dance, etc. That is where my Shibuya-kei rabbit hole began. I then discovered more like Pizzicato Five, Cornelius, ROUND TABLE, vividblaze, Hideki Kaji, Original Love, TWEEDEES, and many more.
      Shibuya-kei may cross path with city pop, but it has a different tone and feel. City pop made you think of summery beach and glamorous night life while blazing through the highway. Shibuya-kei made you think of strolling the city in the afternoon, wearing a casual and dandy clothes, and hanging out at a chic cafe. It made you feel like you're in the better part of Paris. If you've heard "Amai Koibito", you'll knew that feel.

    • @_URBAN_GROVE
      @_URBAN_GROVE  2 месяца назад

      Not really (I think), vaporwave is a genre that began in the 2010's, and it's known for its use of samples from the 80's and 90's. Shibuya-kei started in the 90's, and samples weren't really commonly used. On top of that, Shibuya-kei is quite self-contained in Japan, while vaporwave is a much more western genre. There are times they do sound similar though 👍

      @_URBAN_GROVE  7 месяцев назад +5

      It's similar to City Pop in the sense that it's a Japanese music genre that was heavily influenced by Western sounds, but a phrase I like to use to describe it is "City Pop's Younger Sibling". City pop was more 70's and 80's, while Shibuya-kei is more 90's. They for sure have some crossover though

    • @mariuspoppFM
      @mariuspoppFM 7 месяцев назад

      Sibling or child

    • @_URBAN_GROVE
      @_URBAN_GROVE  7 месяцев назад +4

      I definitely lean towards younger sibling. To me, a child (or successor) of a genre has to have very clear connection and points between the two, similar to how rock succeeded the blues. City pop and Shibuya-kei have a connection and influence, but nowhere near close enough to call it the child --I think.
      It ultimately doesn't really matter though. Child or sibling, Shibuya-kei is just really dope 👍
