  • Dilla spent years in captivity and her trauma is most likely the reason why she could not bond with her baby Delilah. Luckily, Dilla now started a new chapter in life as she was released together with two other orangutans on a sanctuary island last week.

What would happen to the baby if it was born in the wild? She would just leave it?

That's a good question, and I'm hoping that the answer is that they sterilized her so that this cannot happen away from the sanctuary at Nyaru Menteng.

@@larkmacgregor3143 unfortunately, as you see towards the end of this video that they released Dilla to a pre release island. Howrver, she regressed there and wasn't utilizing any of the survival skills she learned at jungle school. They ended up taking her back to the sanctuary and she is now considered a "non-releasable" orangutan. Meaning the obvious, where she will stay at the sanctuary for the rest of her natural life. I believe the severe trauma she experienced prior and not having her mother affected her tremendously where it has prohibited her growth and progression as an orangutan and rejecting her own baby. The sanctuary does implant a birth control device in every female orangutan and remains on even when they are at a pre release island. However, there is the .01% as no birth control is 100% effective or the device itself has fallen out or malfunctioned. So due to the aforementioned there has been some rare instances where an orangutan gets pregnant, like Dilla.

@@shuntley23 Thank you for the update - much appreciated. I feared that Dilla would spend the rest of her days on a pre-release island, and not knowing whether or not she could be prevented from getting pregnant again, abandon another infant - this time without the fail-safe of the caregivers and vets. I am saddened to hear that she's in worse condition than that, and will have to spend the rest of her long life caged. That really is heartbreaking. Perhaps they might try a pre-release island again some day when she is older. Any update on baby Delilah?

@@shuntley23 You seem very informed on these Orangutans. Do you happen to know what ever happened to Budi? I think I saw that he was on one of the pre release islands some time ago and that's the last I heard. Any new info would be very welcome. Thanks!
