    Shishido Baiken is the name of a Japanese swordsman believed to have been active in the early years of the Edo period (1603-1868).
    Legend has it that Baiken was a skilled practitioner of the kusarigama (a metal chain attached to a kama and a weight, also known as the chain and sickle), and around the year 1607 he fought a duel the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi in which he was killed.

    according to the historical records, this was the first time that musashi wielded dual swords, a technique that would become his signature style.

      Actually, there is no reliable historical records to prove that Shishido Baiken even existed. He might as well be a fully fictional character from Eiji Yoshikawa's book.

      @Santiago Ayala: I think that in this fight Musashi crossed his swords to encourage his enemy to try to trap them with his chain so that Musashi could disable one of his opponent's weapons and then close in to finish the fight at close quarters by any means necessary. You can tell that this was a duel because on a battlefield he would have reduced the effectiveness of the chain by staying in the restricting shelter of the tall standing bamboo or of any other standing hedges or tree trunks.

    Jeez, the way Baiken fought was incredible! Especially at 1:37 when Baiken was able to effortlessly parry Musashi's heavy attacks at close range. He was at the disadvantage yet still had Musashi on the back foot. It really conveys what a formidable opponent Baiken was.

      " kusarigama " is a traditional Japanese weapon that consists of a kama on a kusari-fundo - a type of metal chain (kusari) with a heavy iron weight (fundo) at the end. The "kusarigama" is said to have been developed during the Muromachi period. The art of handling the kusarigama is called kusarigamajutsu.

    Each of his duels contributed to wonderful instruction in his book. Tactics are tactics, but the outcome was to make a cut to your enemy. And cut him good lol. To balance the weight of a wielded Katana is hard enough, he surpassed this by introducing his waki and using both simultaneously. I have enormous respect for this warrior swordsman. It’s great comparing philosophy between him and Tsunetomo, because he never swung his sword in hostility but still attained the heights of Samurai wisdom.

    2:00 is actually really interesting. The most effective chain and sickle weapons I've seen have the chain attached to the top of the sickle. This makes it much easier to pull as you now have a handle instead of having to one arm it and also make sure you don't poke yourself with your own sickle! If Shishido had a better kusarigama it would have the chain on top. I have to admit though that the chain coming out from the bottom looks very cool for the stance he takes. Probably the reason why they did it like that.

    • @Hachizukatenzo
      @Hachizukatenzo 2 года назад +3

      I'd say both work alright. When the chain is linked into the top of the kama, you have a better lever and effect on the chain. At the bottom, you can use both kusari and kama separately much easier. It's like having a weapon in both hand. The main principle of the kusarigama is that the weight at the end of the chain is for attacking from distance and the kama to party and attack when the enemy manages to get closer. It's much easier when the kama and kusari can move independently from each other.

    • @jellophant9716

      Musashi never threw his sword He drew it unsheafed so the chain entangled the sheaf . He the usheafed it and cut his opponent down.

    Musashi : high stance dual sword, sometimes switch to mid stance to defend and dodge, then switch to barehanded moves when disarmed and use ninja counter in one kill
    Shishido : keep switching high stance to mid stance resulting lost of ki and focus but manage to disarm musashi's sword

    1:07 - all he had to do, was to come in and stab the chain guy.
    Another gimmick at 1:40 - instead of withdrawing sword and stabbing, all he had to do, was to slide it down towards the legs.

    In the book the battle is much shorter although described pretty long!
    After an initial testing for the other's weakness this happens:
    Baiken tangles his chain on Musashi's long sword he soon realises in horror he must let go of the Katana! Then as soon as he notices Baiken's short sword he makes a delighted face expression and yells "NOW I UNDERSTAND THE KUSARIGAMA!" And he immediately lets go of the Katana. Then in a split second - while rushing towards Baiken he draw-throws his own Wakizashi towards Baiken, who barely manages to dodge it, slightly throwing him off-balance. Musashi arrives in a blink of an eye, punching hard on Baiken's hand trying to reach for his own Wakizashi, still seathed, and instead Musashi draws it, also cutting Baiken in a single move.
    All this in a few swift moments!
    I'm not a writer so sorry for the lousy job - but this fight always amused me. How Musashi could realise and adapt to new situations was phenomenal!
    Also, the fight was a part of a larger brawl, where Musashi and Gonnosuke were walking along and got ambushed by Baiken, Gion Toji (wielding a musket) and a few other thugs in the fog.
    In fact the book is a lot different from this series. While both are excellent I still prefer the book. No actor can possibly play Musashi, Kojiro or Baiken perfectly. These men were just too good fighters. Their entire life was about fighting and they practiced it every single day - so it's an impossible to expect any actor to accurately impersonate them. But Yoshikawa Eiji's outstanding writing can let an insight into their world.
    A few fun facts from the book:
    - Musashi (after becoming Miyamoto Musashi) became much smoother, often smiling at his enemies in battle, without any sign of tension. Scary
    - Kojiro was far from the gentleman displayed in the series. He was a cold unhuman childish killing machine. Killing any time he found joy in it. And he often did.
    - Toji was just a scoundrel, didn't take part in the big fight where Musashi faced off the entire Yoshioka school. He never lost his arm but became a bandit and used a musket against Musashi. Got killed by Gonnosuke
    - Gonnosuke never asks Musashi to let him win. He fights his hardest and while he manages to punch Musashi with his staff (when his mother notices an opening and yells) he also gets wounded badly.
    - Matahachi's mother is much more evil and obsessed to kill Otsu

    • @tigerpilz1
      @tigerpilz1 3 года назад +2

      not really
      1. Enemy could run to Musashi and would have enough loose chain to catch his feet or something. a usually tactic with this weapon.
      or
      2. Enemy still got a Kama and the second sword. Both for close range fighting.
      or
      3. every fight is differant. you can win 1.000 fights against the same enemy. 1001 you still can lose.
      have a ncie day :)

    You know, fighting against a Kusarigama if you had a shield and sword would be easier. But I understand that different cultures rule and this and that. I think the Shield would give you an advantage of defense because with just a Katana, you are open to most of the attacks and would need to rely on your agility to evade the attacks. Let's be glad the samurai didn't have to face off against it's European medieval counter-part knights.

    • @amarenkhbat
      @amarenkhbat 6 лет назад +1

      brianthao102 if you try to block kusarigama then it'll just twist and hit you in the back.

    • @brianthao102
      @brianthao102 6 лет назад +2

      Amar Munkhjargal it would be challenging to do so since you'd need to get behind my shield. You're just trying to make an opening and strike. In reality, this weapon relies on range to do so. Sword and shield would mean good defense with good offense capabilities. You only have distance as a protection. Shorten my distance, then pummeling you senseless and stabbing you at the same time? So, there's not much you could do when my shield gives me an edge to combat at close range and defense from your chain. Aside from that, if I had a spear, you'd be even more screwed because I got my range with my spear and my close combat with my sword.

    • @amarenkhbat
      @amarenkhbat 6 лет назад

      No need to get behind you. I can just hit you from above. Whether you block it or not the chains will hit the shield but the weight will twist and hit you in the back. Unless you bring big-ass roman shield or sth. Also, I got only chain and sickles and you got a bigass shield so there's no way you gonna get close to me.

      Let me remind you, under all that heavy equipement. You are a sitting duck. Just take a look at how the mongol rip through the western world. Knight heavy armor tactic got outclass by hit and run tactic. It not practical to wear full body armor while traveling like a vagabond.
      In your case, you keep saying shield and sword is best combo. Do you understand a real duel taking terrain into the calculation. The medieval knight shield are quite heavy, hard to wield in narrow terrain such as forest, indoor. holding a shield can be considered a disadvantage.
      If you are using the scenario above as an example.

      If I remember correctly, Musashi had actually used his wakizashi to kill Shishido. It was an unorthodox move, as the wakizashi was mostly used as a parrying sidearm at the time. This gave rise to Muashi's distinct twin-bladed style of swordsmanship which he became famous for.
      Of course I could be wrong, it's been about 15 years since I read the book.
