The amount of knowledge one would need to possess to understand how this works is incredible enough. The care, precision, and skill it would take to make this piece is beyond my comprehension. John B was truly a remarkable man.
Didn't it take him 20 years to deliver this final product? It's incredible. The amount of precise work and love gone into such a beautiful gift for someone. It makes me happy that someone would go to this length just to give to someone else.
Absolutely incredible. It breaks my heart knowing this world will never get to show John B the love and respect he deserved. I know he was an atheist but I pray so often that god accepted John B
Don't feel too bad. The part about using a compass to align with magnetic north is dead wrong. The compass is not needed and if it's used the time will be wrong. It's a mistake.
@@Kube_Dog Please explain the correct method? It must be aligned with true north? And how much error does magnetic north cause in time keeping at this level? Interested to know.
0:43 Fatal flaw: a sundial needs to be aligned with CELESTIAL north, not magnetic north. There's enough difference that aligning to magnetic north will throw off the time. The compass is cute, but incorrect.
If you listened to the podcast, you'd know that it was custom made for the owners home location. This would take into consideration the variation from magnetic north. Over time (terrible pun) that variation would change and of course if you moved it wouldn't be accurate either. Describing this device as "cute" says more about your personal shortcomings than any the device might have.
The moment I heard this described in S Town I was dying to see it for my own eyes. Thanks for posting this! RIP John B.
Same here my friend.
This is probably the most thoughtful gift of all time.

I got to see this in person at the National Watch and Clock Museum in Pennsylvania a couple months ago. I was amazed by the work John did.
The podcast was great. I love listening to these types of podcasts then looking up photos and videos afterwards.
I had to see for myself, I'm amazed ...
What a fantastic piece! It's absolutely beautiful.
Amazing work. John b was an amazing talent and mind and human. Sucks to see how it all turned out after his death. RIP
Absolutely amazing. This whole story of John is incredible.
thanks for sharing! what a treasure!
Amazing piece of work!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
What a talented character
This is amazing.
How could you hand make something with such beauty and perfection?
That’s what I was wondering. …..
Incredible. So sad, imagine what John B. Could have contributed to this world if he stuck around.
Great video
Yeah, the lighting and audio were awesome.
Absolutely incredible. It breaks my heart knowing this world will never get to show John B the love and respect he deserved. I know he was an atheist but I pray so often that god accepted John B
i hope he is taking care of it. first the compass wasn't balancing then he dropped it slightly... that thing is a treasure! take care of it!
Right now, somewhere some one might be sitting alone tinkering, making a thing of beauty for you. Just like it was with this sundial.
Wow! It's even more impressive than I thought it would be. Honestly, before watching this, I was afraid that the podcasts had overhyped his work.
There re really lots of characters like him down south. Holed up geniuses
Seeing this makes my self-esteem plummet... Knowing I'll never ever achieve anything.

You just achieved something, friend.

now there's two
Unbelievable
The compass wasn’t balanced because he should have leveled it before he used the compass 😂

You're such a downer.

It wasnt incorrect, his explanation is incorrect. I knew the guy who made it. He wouldn't make that mistake.
I'm going to assume that John B was very aware of what you are saying. He either edited his design for a "muggle's" use or Tom misspoke.
Oli Davey,, my husband did. They grew up together.
so boring
You? Yes, you are.
dop3ship Then go watch TMZ or Pewdiepie or whatever else you pollute your brain with.
The troll is realll
I would bet that one day -far in the future-you won’t think so.
This is art, math, and science rolled into one. It's great.
