I like how with the Luis Gonzalez homer in game 1 and the Matt Williams homer in game 2 the Yankees outfielders barely even moved because they knew it was gone off the bat. Both of those home run balls were crushed!

I am a Diamondbacks fan. I’ll never forget the sinking feeling when Soriano hit that homer in game 7. I knew Rivera was coming in for the 6-out save. Luckily the Diamondbacks came back and won it.

This was the most bittersweet and romantic World Series for New Yorkers, but what the Yankees did on those fateful three nights in the Bronx were totally worth it. For three nights, the city's spirit came back following 9/11.

In the games played in Phoenix in this series, I like how when a Diamondbacks player hit a homer the fireworks they set off coincided with how many runs scored. For instance, on the Matt Williams 3-run homer in game 2 there were 3 blasts of fireworks set off. After Craig Counsell’s solo shot in game 1, they set off the fireworks once.

The World Series that will forever be remembered as the Series that helped heal America - and the world for that matter - following 9/11. Obviously the world was shattered following the events on 9/11 and even as the World Series got underway we all were still feeling the aftermath of the tragedy( no matter where you were in the world, 9/11 had such a terrible and traumatic effect on all of us )more than a month later. You just don't recover so quickly after an event like that. But in a way, thank goodness the Yankees & D-Backs thrilled the hell out of us for those couple of weeks in later-October & early-November. The D-Backs looked like they would blow the doors off the Yankees at the outset( I picked the D-Backs over the Yankees in 6 games before it started )but when the Yankees won those 3 dramatic games all at home it almost seemed like 'Mystique & Aura' would again guide the Yanks to another championship. Then the D-Backs clobbered the Yanks in Game 6 & in a way that was a good thing because by the 6th inning we all knew this was headed for Game 7, an epic conclusion to the Series. And the Emmy Awards that year also got pushed back due to 9/11 and America's response to the terrorist attacks so it wound up being Game 7 & The Emmys on the same night in a 'ratings battle' on TV. D-Backs scored 1st, Yanks took back the lead late, looked for sure like another Yankees championship especially with Rivera on the mound in the 9th aka 'Mr. Automatic'. I said to myself before the bottom of the 9th 'Man, if the D-Backs can just get a couple guys on base, they've got a shot!' And sure enough....they rallied & won in perhaps the most exciting fashion possible. :-) Can you believe it's almost been 20 years since this Series....and fans still remember it as one of the BEST World Series ever. Granted, the D-Backs outhit and outscored the Yankees by a ton yet those 'pesky' Yankees & their championship pedigree still made a Series out of it. And the D-Backs were an 'expansion' team but had a lineup loaded with veteran players who'd been around and came up short on other teams, but in '01 they came together and captured a World Series classic for the ages. :-)

I'm still a fan of the DBacks and can honestly say that I was as shocked as ya'll that they made the WS again last year. They have a solid offense and defense, but the bullpen is bull pucky. Being in a division with the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants is daunting, I hope they surprise me again this year.

It was all part of that Yankee aura that existed up until Rivera blew the save...it would have the most unlikely title the Yankees had ever won and that includes 1996. Imho the managers of this WS are unfairly criticized for some of their decisions in the series.
A lot of people treat Brenly's decisions with Kim as complete idiocy; since Kim is mostly remembered for these blown saves it seems obvious in retrospect. But heading into the WS, Kim was BY FAR the DBacks' best reliever, and the rest of the bullpen was a dumpster fire. Plus, Kim had been a starter in Korea and was more than capable of high pitch counts. Brenly's decisions to bring in Kim and leave him in for long stretches makes sense when you realize how little faith Brenly deservedly had in anyone else.
Torre is often second-guessed for bringing the infield in against Gonzo. Again, this is a Monday Morning QB take. Unless Torre had a crystal ball, it made much more sense to play the infield in and stop the winning run at all costs, especially given Rivera's ability to induce weak ground balls.

One of the best World Series ever. Mostly because the Yankees lost. And also the way they lost with Rivera on the mound blowing it in the bottom corner of the 9th. In the end, all the stars on both teams were taking PEDs, so none of it really matters. But at least you get to see the Yankees lose on the biggest stage.
