I've been gaming since the NES 80s so I've been around. In '21 I suffered a stroke and don't have use of my right hand right now. But because of the versatility of the Switch's joycons design, I am still able to game to an extent 🙏🙏🙏 I have to crown the Switch joycons as the king, because they have made gaming possible for me again. All it took was a small 3D printed adaptive connector for the 2 joycons to be usable with one hand. Thanks Nintendo!

    • @badwrongfun5541

I have nerve damage in my wrists, and I gotta agree there. Being able to hold the joycons separated and far apart helps relieve some strain. I do have the same kind of 3d printed adapter and it lets me still play when one of my wrists is in too much pain for me to be able to use that hand properly. It's a god send.

I was really impressed with Returnal on PS5 where you need to hold one of the triggers half-way down for a function and press it all the way for a different function. The game locks the trigger at 50% and it takes a bit of work to press it all the way. Blew my mind.

Dualshock 4 is easily my favorite. That could change whenever I finally get a PS5, but definitely DS4 for now. Took the DS2/3 and greatly improved it. Another small reason I prefer PS controllers over others is the analog stick placement. Like, I agree the switch pro controller is great but I hate the stick placement. Feels unnatural to me and for whatever reason it's harder to switch to the d-pad with that placement. Plus, from an aesthetic pov I love the symmetry by having them side by side.

Past that is the Wiimote and Nunchuck. It's lacking some buttons but the consistency of the fps controls sets it above normal twinstick controllers.
After that is the latest Playstation controller tied with the Switch Pro controller. Depending only on how the game I'm playing requires the D Pad. Do I use the DPad for most things or the analog stick? Both handle that question differently.

Very different controllers but the way they have impacted me and my life. SNES is my favourite for nostalgia and what it means to me for my childhood. A Link to the Past is the perfect game and impacted me so much that it will never be replaced. Switch Pro is such a perfect controller in all aspects that I would be surprised if it is ever replaced. My choice for the best controller I've used will definitely go to the Switch Pro Controller. Love everything about it; the weight, the feel, everything. My big regret is that I didn't buy the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 version of it when it was for sale. Also really looking forward for Dualsense, which I'll soon be getting for my pc. I had been contemplating on getting it for a while, and now that they've brought out all those cool colors for it, I'm sold. Going for the Nova Pink color on that one. Also an honorable mention; not that it's my favorite one, but I really like the original Xbox controller. Sure it doesn't quite hold put to the newer designs, but it sure left a great impression on me when it came out. Holding it for the first time in my then 11 year old hands and playing Halo felt like I was actually holding something real, like a gun or something. Good video, looking forward to the next one!

My sweet spot in the Playstation timeline was the PS3. I always felt the PS4 was trying to push forward out of my hands, and the triggers gave me no barrier to push against like the frame of the PS1, PS2 and PS3 did. I love the PS5's controller, the new angle solves the PS4's problem, and the analog grips are the best ever put into design. My problem is the controller is just about 10% too large for me to reach all the optional buttons quickly, its not as effortless to navigate the face as the PS1-4 design. Also the PS logo cutout should've just been a damn button.

  • @eliack95

My favorite controller will always be the N64 one. I haven't touched one in forEVER, but any time I see one it triggers those magical feelings of nostalgia, it was the first console in my life that I have significant memories of playing (right next to the OG Gameboy). Other controllers that elicit that same feeling are the Dualshock 1 and the SNES controllers. I also love the concave contours of the top two buttons on the SNES controller, I always imagined they were those Smarties candies.
My favorite controller to use is the Switch Pro Controller. Never held anything so comfortable. And to me, I think the most iconic controller, at least for the modern gaming age, is the Xbox 360 controller, just because of what a big deal Xbox Live was, and how often they were used and recommended for PC games on Windows. I only just retired my last one a few weeks ago after I got the newer Xbox Series X controller.
My least favorite controller are the damned Joy-Cons. If they aren't broken within a few months of buying them, you're probably already disappointed in how the cool features that add to the cost aren't even used in most games.

I’ve gotta say, I have a soft spot for the N64 controller. My reasoning is that if you look at the now-standard controller design (dpad, sticks, triggers/bumpers, 4 face buttons) they can pretty much get the job done on any console - with the exception of the N64. There’s no way better way to play an N64 than with an N64 controller. Nobody likes using the right stick for C buttons!

It's not just that the N64 is the best controller for N64 games - it has a great multipurpose design for its time. Holding it from the left and right outside grips, it's a pretty darn good six button controller! Maybe not as good as the Saturn controller, but the form factor and button layout is still pretty good. And then of course you have the ability to use it as an analog controller for 3D games using the middle and right grips...which of course is the configuration the majority of games published on the platform actually used, even when they were sidescrollers. Once the DualShock controller was introduced and camera control in 3D games became more complex, the N64 controller became obsolete in the overall gaming market. But as a game controller for the mid-90s that lets you control both 2D and 3D games, it's quite well designed!

    • @SufferDYT
      @SufferDYT 2 года назад

@@ShadowEl Yeah this biggest problem with it was really that the software didnt support multiple grips for the most part. Having the middle grip that you can use with either hand depending on what the game needs is a brilliant idea. It just didn't get the support that it could have. 90% of the time you are holding it in the standard fashion with the middle and right grips, but on paper it's design should let you play say super mario with the dpad without losing any features. Not sure why more games didn't support this.

Great video John, as far as i know, that grey/brown Saturn controller is what the original Japanese consol game with. Sega USA had the idea for the black one with the weak left right triggers.

My favorite controller of all time as of now is the current iteration of the Xbox controller, released with the Series S and X models. To me, it is just the perfect all purpose video game controller. Do I wish it had gyro sensors, haptic feedback, and a freaking rechargeable battery? Yes, I absolutely do. But I love the form factor more than any other controller ever created, and that goes back to the Xbox 360 controller. From the 360 to the Xbone to the current Xbox Series, they have constantly made little tweaks and iterations (improved D-pad and triggers, better grips) to what is ultimately the controller form factor that has always just felt perfect and intuitive in my hands since the first time I picked it up to play Call of Duty 2 at a store kiosk in 2005.

I actually find the series x/s controller a HUGE improvement over the Xbox one controller ergonomically. Making that slight adjustment to the shape of the controller going towards the RB/LB buttons makes the controller so much more comfortable. It’s a wonderful controller, second only to the dualsense IMO. Sony and Microsoft knocked it out of the park with their controller designs this gen.

@@PullOutPapa I'm excited to try the DualSense after Johnny's high praise in this video. He got one thing right for sure, which is that the damn thing is ugly as sin. But if it's half as good as he says it is, I can't wait to literally get my hands on it.

The DC controller gets too much hate, i really really like it. The only thing that i think should have been different is that the triggers should have been a little higher up and the Saturn D-pad and a second analog stick would have been nice i guess, but they're not deal breakers, i have a real soft spot for it. wish it would have been around longer so we could have seen a second iteration.

I had a wireless controller for the NES. Camerica Supersonic. It's triangle shaped, there's are A+B buttons on both sides of the stick, so you can use the stick with either your right or left hand, and it uses IR for the wireless signal. It was pretty cool at the time, but required direct line of sight, so sometimes it would stop working in the middle of a game if something got in the way of that line of sight.

So many good controllers, but the one that I personally would choose to play every game with is the brand new Xbox controller with the new disc d-pad. That controller fits my hand perfectly, I love the clickyness of the buttons, sticks feel just right, and that Hybrid Dpad is a gamechanger, it is surprisingly my favourite dpad, and I thought I would hate it when I saw it.
More specifically, the 20th anniversary version of this controller has an incredible feel to it, and has the translucent look that reminds me of my 90s childhood with colourful iMacs and N65 controllers.

The new Xbox Series X controller might be my favorite of all time. While I prefer a mushy d-pad like the NES/SNES, the click and improved d-pad is excellent and precise. It's comfortable and everything feels good. I honestly don't care much for the PS5 controller. It feels a little too chunky and the glassy d-pad doesn't feel good to me at all - especially for fighting games. The haptic feedback is impressive but it does feel kinda gimmicky. For a standard, well rounded controller, the Series X controller does it for me.

It's not my #1, but I really love the smaller redesigned original Xbox controller because of the black and white buttons. In Jedi Academy I used to set one button as force push and the other as force pull and I absolutely loved how I could have multiple force powers set that way. I think it's a shame those buttons died off and never really came back. The Switch Pro controller has probably become my favorite now. It's just so comfortable and easy to play with for long periods. To this day though the SNES is still my preferred controller for 2D games.
