  • "Black Bart" was the alias of Charles Boles, a Civil War veteran and former gold miner who became a highwayman in the late 1800's. He robbed 28 stagecoaches in the states of California and Oregon. Boles was a throwback gentleman robber, similar to the ones in England and Ireland of the 1700's.. What made him infamous was the two poems he left during two of his holdups and his gentlemanly manners.
    His crime streak ended a few years after it began in the fall of 1883 when he was sentenced for his last robbery on November 3. Despite robbing Wells Fargo on many occasions, they chose to just charge him with his last crime. Boles was sent to San Quentin after being found guilty and spent over for years there of his original six year sentence. After being released he disappeared and became the stuff that legends are made of.
