My mom used to sing this to me and give me shot of whiskey when i was sick. The south is great.
Dang my mom would still make me clean and go to school and stuff she didn't care
I’m pretty sure this was made for the movie
I'm from and still live in Tennessee and we had moonshine stills. I know about the shot of liquor when sick.
@@HomeFry3000 they might’ve been born the time this movie came out
I'm from Australia but one place I really adore is the birthplace of Jazz, New Orleans.
“You and me and the devil makes three” god that chilling
it’s also crazy by looking at other comments, that apparently parents sang it to their children as a lullaby…Like huh?! with THOSE lyrics?!
“don’t worry little Timmy, you, me, and the devil? yeah there’s no other lovin little Timmy, ok now go to sleep good night 😊”
is what I imagine when I saw those comments underneath yours 😂
@@SarcasticSloth69 Its about a dad who lives alone with his child because the mother has left. It is the first sentence.
@@SarcasticSloth69 They were probably from Alabama.
I heard this song on Spotify and was mesmerized by it before I realized I'd be drowned by sirens in an instant
😆
We thought you was a toad
Turnt into a hornytoad
My dad would sing this to me when I was little, it was just him, me, and my big sister at the time. My mom locked us out of the house and we went back in through a window and locked her out. He’d sing this to me next to the calendar that I’d count down the days until they had court on. I never thought I’d find this song. I now live with my mom, sister, and step-dad and see my dad once a year. This song means everything to me now.
sorry to hear your mom got you, but hope you'll make an effort to reconnect later. He must be hurting not getting to see you
@@krisp1871 Thankfully I text him almost everyday and have a great relationship with him and my mother. They both mean everything to me.
Tell ur mom u need him in your like
There are many variations of this song, and this version only had a few of the many verses to the original song, but still a very good rendition. Y'all do realize this song is about a baby being left behind by it's Mama after she runs off as a prostitute, and the baby is found by the field owners but it's too late and the child ends up dying. The "come rest your bones on the alabaster stones and be my ever-loving babe" refers to the infants gravestone. (My family is partially from the Appalachias, and some used to say this was a true story, that back in the days young mother's would leave infants they could not afford to care for out in the fields for either the farm owners to find....or for GOD to take back home with Him.
Damn. That's messed up.
Wow that’s a story to remember
It could also mean the field owners (or as I heard it, an older enslaved person too weary to leave) poisoning the baby because they couldn't care for it. "Honey in the rock and the sugar don't stop/gonna bring a bottle to the baby" referred to poison (specifically morphine, depending on the story) being masked by all the sweetening added to the milk.
That’s fun. My parents used this song to sing me to sleep as a kid. Probably explains a lot about my personality now 🤷♀️
i thought this song was about a witch stealing a baby
My husband likes when I sing this song. I can't sing as hauntingly beautifully as these ladies of course.
Marissa Patterson- Lucky man! :P
so you sing to your husband that there’s no other lovin than you, him, and the devil? 😨
Go to sleep little babe
Go to sleep little babe
Your momma's gone away and your daddy's gonna stay
Didn't leave nobody but the baby
Go to sleep little babe
Go to sleep little babe
Everybody's gone in the cotton and the corn
Didn't leave nobody but the baby
You're a sweet little babe
You're a sweet little babe
Honey in the rock and the sugar don't stop
Gonna bring a bottle to the baby
Don't you weep pretty babe
Don't you weep pretty babe
She's long gone with her red shoes on
Gonna need another loving babe
Go to sleep little babe
Go to sleep little babe
You and me and the devil makes three
Don't need no other lovin' babe
Go to sleep little babe
Go to sleep little babe
Come lay bones on the alabaster stones
And be my everlovin baby
Oh I always though it was, “and your daddy’s gone to state”
@@austins5632 it is your daddy is gone to stay

You and Me and the Devil make three !!!
Such a haunting, lyrical rendition of this song. Somehow manages to be unnerving and beautiful at the same time, and really matched the scene it accompanied.
You,me, and the devil makes three
My mom used to sing this to me when I was a baby and this is the only song that would put me to sleep I love this song

He done R-U-N-T off Lol but really love this whole Soundtrack and movie !
R-U-N-N-O-F-T
I never understood why they had to spell it.
@@TheInkPitOx It is a Southern way of speaking . LOL But true and if you really listen to the OLD SOUTH dialect , it really sends the intelligence level way down the river , so to speak . The spelling is just a fun way to spell and hence , pronounce it . I runt off with my old man . ha ha
@@beckythomas5755 I suppose so. I've been reading Huckleberry Finn, which has a lot of 19th century Deep South dialect.
@@TheInkPitOx Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer are among my favorite books when I was growing up . The character Becky Thatcher made it all the more fun and interesting for me . What adventures ! Happy reading !
Bought the cd for the soundtrack at walmart....of all places

Why is there a second song playing in the background? It ruins the soundtrack.
ImaFukinHero it’s not a second song, it was in the movie and it’s a mouth harp. It was to add the effect that they were sirens. And this comment is not hostile at all I was just saying what I think it was.
Idiot. Just go fuck yourself. "'Second song"' my ass...
AWESOME!! GREAT MOVIE , GREAT SOUNDTRACK
