    Awesome video. I've watched it several times, jumping back and forth to make sure I understand everything. Thank you for re-posting!

    great video... Question; Cal MV in your Kestrel was 859 yards. your using 765-900 yards and decided on 800 for truing. Why not use a distance between 859-730? With respect to the 15% range.

    This doesn't true the muzzle velocity, it offsets the error in the ballistic calculation by artificially adjusting the muzzle velocity variable. Doing an MV cal means you've got sloppy input to the ballistic calculator. It means something is wrong somewhere, probably in the environmental variables such as temperature/humiditiy/altitude but also wind effects can be the cause. If MV cal is significantly different from measured MV I wouldn't trust it for more than that day. Recalculate when you have a lower wind environment or more precisely known conditions. Just handling the kestrel improperly can cause incorrect enviro readings forcing the mv cal to compensate. Take the time to have your enviro live reading be accurate and lock it while holding your breath or at least breathing away from the sensors.

    2:29 What about .22lr sub Sonic ammo? What range should I use the true my mv?

    My kestrel tells me my transonic range is 1,752 yards but My shooting range only goes out to 1,000 yards so I can’t do the recommended 85-95% range so I’m not sure what range to true my muzzle velocity at or if I should do it all since I’ll only be shooting from 100-1,000 yards? I used a magneto speed v3 chronograph to get my muzzle velocity. Do I still need to calibrate my muzzle velocity? If so at what range? Thank you for these videos they are a big help.

      Basically you can true at 1000 yards or whatever range you can shoot but you only need to do this if the results are not matching up with what the Kestrel is predicting. There may be no reason to true if you are getting good results. If you true at a shorter range, you may need to do it again if you get the chance to shoot out longer than 1000 yards.

    If your impact at 800 yards was at 5.88 why did you enter 6.3 into your drop?

    • @freelancer2011

      This confused the hell out of me for a while, too 😆 I slept on it and then viewed from another perspective. So, the Kestrel predicted 6.88 Mils. She called the hit at 7.46 Mils. So, 7.46 - 6.88 = 0.58 Mils (notice how it's written near the right hand side of the pic).
      Then, you take the original prediction and subtract 0.58 from it.
      6.88 - 0.58 = 6.30 Mils.

    Awesome video! Do I need to true MV if I've measured it with accurate chrono LabRadar ?

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  3 года назад

      You still might have to. Even though chronos are very accurate, truing takes into account other factors that might be affecting the bullet flight.

    Once again a great refresher. Following on with your answer below about no changes when changing altitude, temps etc, how does it change when re-checking MV later and the MV recorded on a Labradar is 40-50 ft/s less due to temperature variance on the power. So slower when cold, faster when hot. Will the 5700 elite simple fractor powder temps into its calculation. (thanks again for all your great videos)

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  3 года назад +3

      You can enter a MV Temp Slope, if you know what your powder temperatures changes are based on temperature. Go to Gun->MV->MV Temp Slope. Enter the amount of MV change per degree F or C. Then the Kestrel will calculate the powder changes across the entire temperature spectrum.

    Awesome video....my question....I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor out to about 950 yards at my local range. If I am not shooting past that distance and past the supersonic range, do I need to true the rifle at all? Thank you...hopefully not a silly question.

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  7 месяцев назад

      It depends. Are you hitting center at 950 yards? Then you don't need to do anything. If you are off high or low, then I would do a calibration.

    • @alexmook6786

      @lBallistics Great advice....I am hitting at 950 yards on a target that is about 3' x 3'...It is hard to see where I am hitting, but we have a strobe that lights up when the steel is hit. I am happy that I can at least hit the target that far out! I am inconsistent with my hits, maybe 2 out of 4 hits at that distance, and I dont know if it is technique, or just not having the rifle trued for consistency.

    @Kestrel Ballistics Great info, I am just wondering however ... will this change the point blank MV in different atmospherics ? i.e. if I change locations, elevation for a hunt/shoot ....
    and how will changing this MV change the 85-95% Velocity for the new location/atmospherics?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  3 года назад +5

      The answer is no. The trued MV occurs with the atmospherics accounted for and as you relocate the local atmospherics are again taken into account when calculating a new set of holds. The Kestrel will modify the MV based on what environmentals it measures for each calculation, thus no additional cal MV is necessary when traveling.

    Hi Kestrel team. My transonic zone is around 1,800m. Is it still practical to do truing at 1,500m (being 85%)? Have access to 900m F-class range with electronic targets. But that is 50% of transonic. Your guidance is appreciated. Tks

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  2 года назад +1

      If you cannot true out far enough, you can still true closer (if you need to). So if you find you are missing consistently at 900m, it is ok to do a CalMV at that distance. If you ever shoot out further, you may have to do it again though.

  • @andrewakins

    Do you true your MV once and done? Or do you do ever time you go to the range and shoot? Thinking it would be good to do before every match.

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  2 года назад

      If you do it at the suggested range (15% before transonic), you should only have to do it once

    hello this video is very educational thank you the muzzle velocity can be done at 400 meters or 600 meters how much is the accuracy.

    • @KestrelBallistics
      @KestrelBallistics  Год назад

      If you true the muzzle velocity at 400 meters, you still may have to do it again at 600 meters. It is best to do it at the furthest range you can while still in supersonic region.

      That is an Applied Ballistics function. For 4DOF, use the Axial Form Factor instead.

      No. As long as you are using the same profiles, nothing should change. However maybe check settings like yards/meters

    So wait, the Kestrel is saying to hold at 6.75Mils at 800yards... yet you say the Kestrel is saying to hold at 6.88 mils for 800. You take the shot and make .5 mils needed adjustments on the drop. I just want to make sure when i start Truing i am using the numbers in front of me. Good info
