About 15 years ago I visited Portsmouth historic dockyard where the real Victory is located. In one of the adjacent display rooms was a very large model of the Victory which I spoke to one of the attendants about. It’s a stunning piece of modelling, in fact it’s so precise that he said that when they wanted to correct or improve anything on the real ship they actually consulted this model it’s so accurate. He said that the modeller, who I think I recall him saying was an American, even created his own model ropewalks to ensure that all the sheets and rigging lines were made in the correct pattern. I don’t know which impressed me the most, the real Victory or 5hat model.
Hi Malcom, I’ve visited the Portsmouth historical dockyards on 3 occasions, most recently 5 years ago, to see the new Mary rose museum, I’m a scale modeller, and I’m building a 1/72 HMS Victory atm , and I’m always blown away by the skills of the model builder of that time period
This is based at Chatham Naval Dockyards i believe John? I took a shed load of pics of this beauty to aid me in my build ( when i get the space to build...). She is absolutely stunning ❤
That is a real piece of work, I see built for a film and took, amazingly just three months to construct. A fascinating collection of finely detailed sailing ships made mainly out of lamb/ mutton bone by French Napoleonic prisoners of war is held at the National Trust property of Arlington Court near Barnstaple, Devon. Well worth a visit and a viewing!
A nice detail about the current discovery of the original ''yellow''' hull painting: The model is accurate and `actual` here as well. Was it changed, when the old colour was found ?
I wish I new more about this spectacular build. How many hours, how many modelers, and what was the eventual build cost. Was everything hand made & scratch built? Truly phenomenal.
Hey john I had a quick question, how can I get my hands on the 1:72 scale hms victory 1:1 plans? I'm wanting to build one from scratch but still want some plans to go off of for measurements without buying an expensive kit. Thanks
They say you need to build a model pf the Victory at least 11 ft in length in order to get all the detail. I built my model of the Victory some 30 odd years ago and stands at 4 ft. but this one blows my mind
A great shame about the idiotic pink colour. It was stabbed at by sampling _selected_ specks of old paint, but took _no account_ of how the cheap paint used at the time changes over hundreds of years exposed to the elements and did zero research into that problem. No artist who portrayed the Victory near the time rendered it in this colour, and no written account of the time mentions this colour or anything close to it, but all speak of some form of dull yellow. - 'Ochre' / 'Sad yellow' and so on. The 'experts' got it wrong.
I’m going to need a bigger workshop
You don't need a workshop - you need a shipyard and a full work crew to build this model! WOW!!
Tolly agree Rick, definitely a ships crew needed

Amazing craftsmanship
Totally 💯 agree
Beautiful model. Thanks for posting John.
Your welcome

Yes I was at Chatham this weekend, beautiful day

I’ve seen a lot of the bone carving ships in different museums, works of art Stephen

Jeez unbelievable.
Amazing work.
Totally 💯
Absolutely stunning model, thanx 4 posting john
It’s a great day out at Chatham historical dockyards dee
Buitifull. For scale that is about the size of 2 full size vans and probably about 24ft tall. Hats off to the builders
Yes hats off, completed in only 3 months
Now I have to find that film and watch it. LOL
Yes I did the same russell
That really is amazing.
💯 Barry

Hi Ye I’ve been searching the internet for more construction information on the model, but its been very hard to find any reliable information
This model of hms victory was used for a movie in the late 40s to maybe late 50d
From the film. That Hamilton woman
Stunning tribute to a glorious ship.
It’s a beautiful model of victory
Fabulous!!
Couldn’t agree more

I’m sure you can order just the plans from caldercraft my friend
@@Johnbuildsiconic do I just email John Wright then? I've tried that and haven't gotten a reply
I’ve had the same problem, them not replying the emails, I think there’s a number you could try ringing
@@Johnbuildsiconic I haven't been able to find that, I'll have to look again
It’s a film prop, looks fantastic on film but does not bear close scrutiny.
I agree, Fantastic model, but it doesn’t have the same detail, like the 1/72 hms Victory I’m building
Amazing! Where is this model located?
Hi the model is located at Chatham historical dockyards, in Kent
@@Johnbuildsiconic Thank you sir!

I’m building the 1/72 HMS Victory, that’s about the biggest I’ve got room for atm
Imagine building that in your house then trying to get it out
Would have to take off the roof
Three months? I wonder who many were working on it? I guess Mr. Google will send me down the rabbit's hole on this one.
I’m sure with it being for a movie, it had a large production budget and team working on it, cost 5,600 in 1940, that would be over 300,000 today
Sweet baby Jesus, that's a big model
It really is, over 6 meters high
oh my lord thats huge I want 1
You will need a barn to display it 🤣
Does it float or can it be sailed 🤔.
Yes it flouted for the movie in 1941, and could fire a full broadside
Looks a great day out John
Was a fantastic day, and the sun was shining Robert
Great model ,have you seen the film John?
Maybe when I was younger Steve, but I’m going to watch it now I’ve seen the model
Only three months to construct?
Ye, they would have used a large production crew for the build
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks
That’s a great job
Magnificent
It really is travis
Well John, what's stopping you ?
Apart the need for a new house, not the model for the spare bedroom.
😂😂😂
I Would need an industrial unit at this scale
Scale envy, John???
Very much so Stephen
Were is that model located?
Chatham historical dockyards
what is scale or approximate scale ?
I’m finding it hard to get the scale information of this model
@@Johnbuildsiconic ok ty !!
The original HMS Victory length is 69 meters. This model length is as Plaquete says 7.6 meters. This means the scale is approximately 1 : 9 .
@@JohnLorac ok tyvm !!
did the Victory have Royals?
royals ??
@@Johnbuildsiconic the upper sails. As far as I know, Victory had only three sails on foremast and main mast.
@okowolf, get you now, no I don’t think victory had any royal sails
Шикарный вид !
Thank you

I totally agree with you, that’s why the model I’m building of hms Victory is finished in yellow ochre
Where is this housed?
Chatham historical dockyards
You could do it two days....airfix
Ye in airfix, wouldn’t have looked much different in 1941 🤣
Unfortunately there is no perception of size. The video needs someone standing behind it for a moment.
Just look at the thumbnail, that give it the perception of the size, it’s massive Graham
I HATE THE MUZAK. DRC'd.
