That one is incredible. She was so brave to sit there carrying on a fake conversation to give her husband time to escape. If at any point the guards had looked in and realised he was gone I'm sure she wouldn't have left the tower alive.
The upper classes tended to be executed by beheading the lesser classes by hanging. The drowning although allegedly one of the better ways to leave ones mortal coil would induce massive terror as you would see the end as it slowly encroached. That some escaped is incredible but as we know many did not. Brutal times. Many thanks for sharing.
I don't think you can consider being caught by the nightswatch on the roof as an escape. She escaped from her cell, but she didn't escape from the prison. Or from custody.
agreed and she really didnt even "escape" the cell her dude gave her the keys she walked right out and got immediately caught feels like they added this story because of the whole women can be bad ass too bullshit movement
And right in this documentary is the latest English method of execution: watch a historian go round and round in the tower, along with the cameraperson and the audio tech, churning your stomach, leading to vomiting, blackout, and eventual death.
I googled him. Apparently, John Bawd was imprisoned as well in a tiny cell called the Little Ease. It was a windowless cell that was designed to be so small you couldn't sit, stand or lay down in it and therefore have very 'little ease' of comfort.
I was there once as teenage .On vacation with my parents visiting the old country ,And found my big feet could fit some the stairs there .Since I found that people in medieval days had tiny feet ,But were strong and tough .Due the Armours as well weapons of the time .And I guess that makes for having tiny feet ,So could distant English cousin with feet there .But founded weird that Crown Jewels housed there ,Due all executions and death that was there once .
These stories are all so fascinating. Its ironic that the first ever prisoner was also the first to escape.
Great! A nice heartwarming story of the resourceful Winifred at the end. Nice one Matt! ⭐👍

Wow, that last story was amazing! Thank you!

That Pirate's Death execution is absolutely brutal.
Life back then was brutal. Thanks so much for sharing all this wonderful history.
Excellent video as always...👍👍
The Pirate's execution method is a bit brutal! 😲
A pirate's life can also be brutal.
Great stories.
I always love a Matt Lewis video, thank you! I was wondering why you say hung instead of hanged? I learned that you say hanged in reference to people
You are correct, he was wrong. Not very impressive for an historian.
@@resnonverba137the entire narration is absolutely terrible. He should stick to research
Meat and portraits are HUNG - people are HANGED.
I love hh tv docs. Brilliant as always.

Getting a bit seasick watching you walk around in a circle!
Wow! I just love this host! I wonder if he has any more videos?
Love your work HH 👍
Thanks 👍
Thanks.
Interesting
You didn't mention that Flambard's rope was too short and he dangled on the end until rescued by his men who were waiting at the wall.
Wow.
The British are so polite.
They even let prisoners throw lavish parties and order wine.
The guards drink with the prisoners.
12:34- STOP!
I'm getting dizzy.
fascinating stories , however I dont undersand why you cant stand still ,watching you walk round and around made me dizzy !
If I'm not mistaken priests have 7 holes 🤔

But what happened to Alice's guard?
I googled him. Apparently, John Bawd was imprisoned as well in a tiny cell called the Little Ease. It was a windowless cell that was designed to be so small you couldn't sit, stand or lay down in it and therefore have very 'little ease' of comfort.
Gangster Kings and Holy Wars.
Humanity at its worst.
Your first story two men escaped together but you only told us what happened to the other man.
I thought the presits excape happened in the 1300s.
The what?
The presits.
They came before the sits.
Then the sats overthrew the sits.
@@MrYfrank14 Of course!
An interesting upload. Alice didn't actually escape though, the attempt was thwarted. Also, people are hanged, not hung. They're not curtains.
Hung and hanged are both fine to describe the execution of a person by rope. Language changes and its not really worth taking a hard stand against it.
@@RealSaintB You are incorrect. Could do better.
@@resnonverba137 no, you are just pedantic and refuse to admit it's a character flaw.
So Alice didn't escape.
whoever did the camerawork needs to stay still!!! so annoying
Wasn't the tower painted white at one time?
You call that a tower? Try the Sears Tower, friend.
First
Sad fk 😂
