@darkdruidsvale thats actually the popular conversion guideline for American Tourists in Japan because we assume that they can't do math. "just remove the 2 0's at the end" it's actually pretty accurate because the cost of food in America on average is 30% higher than in Japan. So them technically being 30% off when converting price actually keeps it more accurate.
That's only because the economy and inflation is all fucked up right now. The exchange literally hasn't been this bad in Japan since the bubble popped in the 80s. It used to be 100-110 yen per dollar and now we are hitting 150.

Fun fact. That dessert you have is like the lowest normally priced when it comes to desserts in restaurants in Norway. @@cookiestrong8757 it's closer to 7, actually. it sounds low, but i presume the prices of products reflect that? i've never been to japan, so let me know if i'm wrong. i believe this creator is from the US and most of his audience is likely from the western world, so £6.50 for a dessert isn't that expensive.

For example, no one is commenting on the Indian street food videos saying "actually, that isn't expensive at all" because they understand that it is, relatively speaking. I know in my field at least (software engineer) people earn wayyyy less in Japan.
Good point. $8 for a parfait may over there may be nearly an hours worth of work for most young people after taxes are taken out, etc, which would be the equivalent for most young Americans spending $15 on a desert. Not completely outrageous, but definitely pricey.
@@xjmmjbnqfstjdijoj2044 You’re right.
