  • Vertical Pianism vs Horizontal Pianism (Wilhelm Kempff vs Alfred Cortot) in Bach's Adagio from the Concerto No.5 in F minor, BWV 1056 (in their own transcriptions).
One pianist here is bel canto and makes you cry to tears; the other one can't phrase properly and makes accents all over the place.....

Proof that being born in the 1800s doesn't make you a good pianist.

Je ne suis pas convaincu. L’effet dépend des transcriptions et du piano utilisé. D’autre part, Cortot exagère le rubato. Kempff est un très grand pianiste, surtout dans Beethoven.

Cortot is more chopinesque, Kempff is more classic stile. Both genius in yours interpretations.

Not the cage match I was expecting but interesting. Big difference in playing. Maybe it's Pleyel destroys Steinway?)

Surely the pleyel must have had an exquisite tone, but you can still tell that Kempf is just constantly banging on the keys. Pleyel or not, its always going to sound bad that way.
