Stranded in the Bolivian Desert: Overnight Bus from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni

  • Sharing with you my craziest travel story of traveling in Bolivia and Chile. We explored La Paz, doing a walking tour, riding the Teleferico gondolas, and visiting the Witches Market. Then we took an overnight bus to Uyuni to do a 3 day Salt Flats, Salar de Uyuni tour which was incredible! We opted to get dropped off at the Chilean border and stayed in San Pedro de Atacama for a few days. We booked a bus back to Uyuni but was faced with so many issues like visa border crossing, bus getting stuck in ditches on the dirt roads, protestors shutting down the roads, offroading, bus smelly toilet and flies infestation all with no food or water for 22 hours! Even though this was in 2018, I’m still traumatized and it took THIS long for me to share this story because I still can’t believe this happened… hope you enjoy!

Found this news reporting, which matched our dates: "Various gatherings are set to take place on Tuesday, March 20, throughout the country in support of Bolivia’s territorial claim over the Atacama corridor. The navy has called for “Blue Tide” (Marea Azul) demonstrations, the largest of which will take place in the city of La Paz. There, marchers will gather beginning at 15:00 (local time) at three points - the Estado Mayor, Plaza Abaroa, and Plaza Gualberto Villarroel - before converging on Plaza Francisco. Smaller demonstrations are to be anticipated in other departmental capitals, smaller cities, and border areas. An increased security presence and associated transportation disruptions are possible."

Wow that sounds a lot longer than a 3 hour tour! 😮

It was a 3 day tour! Started in Uyuni and we ended at the Chile border but you can get dropped off back at Uyuni as well.

Hey, I must have missed it. What tour did you take that gave you the option to go back to Uyuni or get dropped at the boarder. Would also be interested in what you paid. Thanks!

At that time, it was with Red Planet Expeditions for $210/pp (but this was in 2018!)
