- Here's a list of everything I learned from Montell. I took the time to think about it and write it down.
-Introduced me to Upwork (I first found out it exists from one of his videos).
-Told me about some of the tools I used to create a portfolio as well as the templates (unsplash, envato elements, some pointers about canva and photoshop).
-Told me about signwell which is a tool I use to create contracts (He talks about simpleinvoices.io but I already knew about it - didn't get that from him).
-Taught me how to properly format a cover letter (small things like spacing, formatting, keeping it short, having "Kind regards" (a professional close), stuff like that.).
-Taught me to look at other freelancer profiles to help write my own
-Taught me that I didn't need a website or a logo to start my business.
-Taught me that I should create a separate bank account for business purposes.

I doubt that Montel himself has made 40k on upwork before starting to teach it.... You could have personally come up with your own authentic course using your own words and delivery. Montel o any of the other people you learned stuff from doesn't own any sort of rights o authority over the softwares you learned from him, all you had to do was to use your own words

All people commenting should watch the video with the receipts. There is concrete evidence of Thomas taking his content, same exact format, almost word for word with no credit. This guy may genuinely get sued for all the money he made from selling his course based on what I see. And Thomas saying he was going to credit Montell, that should have never happened. You know where credit is due, say it from the jump, if you know you're bringing value why would it matter?
I knew that you were one of montell students when you made the video about the cover letter (How to write an upwork cover letter that stands out is the video title) because the cover letter template that you used in that video is the exact same template that Montell gave his students in his course. and the fact that you never gave him credit untill now is embarrassing. You should come back with a full apology video to get some of your credibility back.

Never heard of Montell before this. Watched both his videos and this one. Honestly, yea I get it, but nobody has copyright over knowledge. His whole argument is that "It's my system, these are my templates, my scripts, etc.", Montell did not invent envatoelements, using google drive, canva templates, those are all knowledge and systems. The course thing, sure you can argue it's unethical, but to say that one guy owns the system and ideas to a system is, despite whatever you want to believe, not how things work.
When you pay for these courses, you are paying for the knowledge. It's not like you can not figure out how to get those things without Montell or his course. So while it is unethical, if it's all just knowledge and no copyright, then there's no case. Just my thoughts.

Fair assessment, but he literally took his course and pretty much ripped the entire thing and rebranded it as his own. That's not knowledge. That's copying. Which is illegal and subject to litigation. I suggest you both look at Montell's most recent video responding to this video with even more solid evidence.

"The course thing" is Montel's complaint. Thomas didn't copy "knowledge." He copied templates and word for word instructions and dialog from a written course. That's not copying "knowledge" that's copying copyrighted materials, which is not "unethical".. it's theft. Also, you just admitted Thomas behaved in an unethical way. Why would you write more paragraphs in your comment defending Thomas' behavior than supporting the other side of his unethical actions (Montel)?
during the qna somebody asked him where he got his info. thomas said he got his knowledge from doing his own research. which is clearly not true. he got all his knowledge from montell. why would you believe anything he says

You’ll have an intellectual property law suit if you don’t refund people and take down your product / info … you copied AT word for word. There’s a history of people who lose in your shoes, regardless what your “side” of it feels like. Even still, you may be liable to pay restitution on any revenue you’ve generated from your course.

Never crediting him and then making a course for profit that has a lot of what he has created himself. From what he's saying, i mean if you think about it, you're barely over a year doing what you do and you made a course months ago? You took somebody's years of research and development, figured out the rest, and repackaged it withn a year as your own idea.

Good explanation, Thomas. This has happened so many times before and you made some missteps, specifically around presenting his same intellectual property in your course. But, all is not lost. Montell seems like a reasonable dude. What I suggest is before you say anything bad about him online, reach out, applogize, and see if the two of you can work it out privately. There's no need to go to war over a simple mistake that can be compensated easily between the two of you. Some years ago, a guy named Mr. X ripped off Jay Abraham. Jay was able to work out a deal with him that ended the drama without serious legal consequences. Mr. X was actually a genius student of Jay Abraham and had unique insights of his own, and I think Jay recognized that.

Thomas Im, you came off as authentic and I think that's why so many people found you, and you found success on YT. But....bro as I have seen your videos and NOT 1 time did you ever mention the name Montrell. You gave a whole song and dance about oh you researched this and that, but the whole time you were getting this knowledge from a course that Montrell created. Now he (Montrell) can't take credit for everything you learned that's true, but for you not to mention him or his name before this moment says the truth about what you were doing. You stole a creators course, not everything, but word for word you stole alot of those templates and concept. It takes a lifetime(months on yt) to build a reputation and only a second to ruin it... This video your talking in circles and that's were your wrong fess up let it go, make restitution to Montell change and remove his work, and move on with things. No, go watch the dude's video. I was all on Thomas's side until i did. There was no course for upwork like his. Thomas stole a ton of the exact things that guy did, added a couple extra, then repurposed it as entirely his own. He never gave any credit to the guy either. If you watch other guys in the online business, they give proper credit all the time to the guys they learned from. They also don't then, turn around and basically repackage their mentor's course as their own.

The only way i can see Montell going after you is unless you literally copied and pasted Montell Course in your paid course ( which he has not proved or looked at your course). Then that would be stealing. But if you made it your own way in your own words teaching what he thought you then your good. Cause thats what everyone does.
As for the cover letter he states that you stole his template like bro he didnt create it. When you did a video on it the template reminded of the famous Upwork guru Freelance to Win which i took his course around 2017 (before Montell made anything). That template has been around for ages. Nothing new.
Keep doing you. The way you teach is actuallu refreshing and after years of trying to be a freelancer your teaching style actually work for me. Plus you said it yourself. Your using your own examples in your videos and using your own words. Keep up the good work.
