    I learned my lesson in 1985; I bought a '83 Yamaha Seca Turbo/650....and had 5 days until starting a new job in Seattle- where I lived. So naturally I thought a trip to Tempe AZ would be fun. It was, but when I had salt stains all over my skin, with lips/nose, and knuckles bleeding, and barely able to scrawl an "X" when I checked into a motel....I knew I was toast. (Prior to checking in I passed a bank's reader board: 117F.)
    Getting to the hotel, put the sidestand down, got off the bike (barely)....and the asphalt ate my bike. The stand literally buried itself INTO the asphalt. As soon as I got to my room I staggered out again to find the ice machine. I made multiple trips, filling up the bathtub....and climbed in, desperately trying to reduce my core temp. A few hours later, feeling better, I called for a taxi cab- to go out for a dinner. I wound up in a hospital w/ a team of doctors all around me, IVs, etc. I had passed out in the taxi- and the driver thought I was an OD case, and took me direct to an ER. That saved my life. I had a severe case of heat stroke that forever afterwards affected my ability to handle high heat. It crept up on me ...and I literally baked myself on 12hr. riding days.
    I was held overnight, released the next morning. My doctor gave me a length of surgical tubing and an empty 2.5gal. plastic jug. "Fill it up w/ water; you need to drink
    even when you're not thirsty. Continually. You need to kill two of these, per day". And I did. I headed out of AZ westward into S. Cal/L.A.- and northbound on I-5 back to Seattle, with that jug bungee corded behind me, and the tubing up into my helmet. A Camelbak!!!! It worked.
    I still ride, but extremely hot days are avoided at all costs....because for me I just have less ability to handle it.

      That's something A LOT of people don't get. Once you've had heatstroke, you're FOREVER changed. It's rather like a sprain versus breaking the bone. The bone can heal back actually stronger than before you broke it (depends on the particulars of course) BUT the sprain is a ligament tear, and those never really get back to 100%...
      I've known quite a few people who were GREAT in the heat... handled it like champions 110% and pushed harder and went farther on less than anyone else in the group... Until they went too far... AND if ever it came to heat STROKE, they were f***ed for life... EVERY time. Heat Stress or Heat Exhaustion could be dealt with in a timely manner... Cold soaks, showers, hose down and drip dry, a skinny-dip in the friggin' lake... whatever... hydrate... eat a little something... AND those could be nursed back...
      It took a while for Heat Stress or Exhaustion... BUT they COULD recover again. Heat Strokes NEVER got back to 100%, at least, not in my experience and observation. It's scarier stuff than everyone seems to think. ;o)

      Icy bath = bad. Skin capillaries close down, trapping heat in your body. Put ice packs under arms and between legs where large blood vessels are close to your skin.

  • @untitleduser666
    @untitleduser666 2 года назад +15

    Staying hydrated allows your body to sweat, and sweat allows body heat to leave through your skin. Sweat also exploits evaporative cooling (like getting out of the pool on a breezy day). You can mimic this effect by wearing a damp shirt under your mesh gear or with a damp bandana around your neck. Hydration also helps protects you from heat related illnesses, which can be especially dangerous while riding a motorcycle.

    • @supersloth1667
      @supersloth1667 2 года назад

      I work outside so I have a shirt that does a similar thing to the cooling towels and evaporates quickly, it feels much cooler than wearing any other shirt under my jacked (since it's mesh and breathable). Even in 90+ heat it's great!

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 2 года назад +1

      1. While we talk "great guns" about staying hydrated, remember some salt and Vitamin C to actually METABOLIZE the water instead of letting it "run right through you"... Hyponatremia is a thing, and has killed already in recent years, including a number of Marines on a run, because they over hydrated and didn't pay enough attention to nutrition at the same time, primarily salt...
      2. Cooling Vests... These damn things are AWESOME, and can fit under the "dual season" jackets just fine once you take out the "winter liner"... It's also an option to get a half-size larger jacket to make room if your present one might prove too tight... I have one with "ice packs" in it, though they're not "water ice"... The stuff holds a chill for a LOT longer than regular ice... BUT they also make the kinds of vests that you soak down in cold water and wring out just enough not to drizzle everywhere (mess) and then wear as normal... under any vented jacket, they double the chill...
      3. Finally there are specifically "cooling rags" specifically designed to soak up a LOT of water and maintain their cooling effect through "evaporative cooling" for longer than any normal cloth. They're cheap, easily packed along for the ride, and again, you soak them down in cold water and wring out so not to drizzle everywhere (mess again)... Then fold/roll into a favorite place to apply... I like tucking them under my collar in my shirt and leaving just a fair corner sticking out over the back of my jacket when I use one...
      It really depends on your area, temperature zone, and personal comfort needs. You can hunt and shop as far as you want to take it... Along with a "regular break routine" to cool off and do anything but ride and sit in the sun, you should be able to handle a nearly indefinite road-trip. It IS worth suggesting that you devote an extra long break around any meal times. It can be difficult to create an awareness of exactly how hungry you are when you're overheating... SO taking the time to find a place even near a restaurant or whatever to just sit with a soda (or ice water) and chill could be INDISPENSABLE... Usually (just my experience) about a half hour in a cooled space with something to drink is enough to reconnoiter about eating properly, not over-indulging, but doing better than a burger and fries to hit the road "ASAP"... The better care you take of your body, the better it will perform for YOU. ;o)

    A tip I received from the old grizzled man who sold me my first bike, in the summer, in Phoenix. Take your hydration pack, fill it up about half way. Freeze that shiz, overnight. Make sure it lays flat, and in such a way that more water can be added to ensure it ends up full. Take that tasty iceberg, and shove it into the front of your jacket. It’ll help cool you off, and as the day progresses, the ice will melt, ensuring you always have cool water to sip on

    Rode my 2018 Super Tenere last September from Indianapolis out to Tucson to visit with my sister. I rode with a Hydration Backpack . Ran the tube up inside of my helmet. Just flipped the valve when I needed water. I wore full gear. It got up around 100-106 degrees in Utah and Arizona. Bottom line, the Hydration Pack saved my ass.

  • @supersloth1667

    I will say that having a shirt that has "cooling" technology by allowing the sweat to evaporate is essential. I work outside so I wear that type of material with long sleeves and it keeps me quite cool in the 90+degree heat under my mesh jacket. Particularly the shirt is the Arctic cool work shirt but I'm sure any similar made shirt would work.

    "i can''t affoard so i buy 3-season gear"
    Yea, about that...
    Buy the mesh stuff (that has the optimal protection...)
    Then supliment with a rain cover and wool stuff, Boom! all season gear considering that you most likely have everything not motorcycle related already! (excluding possibly the rain gear)

    broke 12K on the bike today [big grin]. it can get over 100 easily all summer here in north carolina [was 80 degrees today]. next helmet i buy will be a white one for summer. i already have a white mesh mc jacket. harley has a long distance 'hammock' seat at an exorbitant price with optional heating and cooling, and yes i am worth it lol. i have a little cooler that holds a six pack of soda. when i stop for gas i get a nice cold bottle of water, have a drink and pour the rest over my hot head and all over my upper body [mesh jacket and all]. it's like a wet tshirt contest without the shame lol. it sure feels good on a hot day. as it evaporates it cools me off. i freeze water inside a soda bottle and pack that [make sure it wont leak at the cap]. i have to drink a lot to keep my kidneys functional so it's normal for me to bring a lot of fluids with me. one caveat; the one time the heat got the best of me, my sweat dried as i rode and i didnt feel hot til i stopped and it was too late; dehydrated so bad that my blood pressure actually dropped and i nearly fainted when i got off the bike... i ended up in an ER. so be careful; dont think 'i'm ok because i'm not sweating.' i learned that one the hard way.

    over 105 degrees mesh dehydrates you faster than leather due to wind burn. wear moisture wicking shirts, and loosen the sleeves and occasionally unzip the chest a little. get that cooling effect.

    will say i agree with everything you've said, i ride 100 miles a day on a klr 650 for work and wear head to toe black gear and its been consistently over 100 this year in Oklahoma, and its honestly not bad because of mesh textile gear and most importantly, i always wear a camel bag, that paired with a modular helmet is one of the best simple duos i can recommend for motorcycle gear

    Tip one. Don’t ride a bike with lots of weather protection. My r1200rt is awesome when it’s cold or raining but it’s pretty brutal during the peak of summer lol

    Fly makes cooling vests that can go under your gear (if you choose to wear gear). I have one. It’s super nice. They run about $60 but you get them wet and they stay wet for 12 hours. If you’re looking online for one and can’t try it on before you buy, I’d recommend ordering one size smaller than what you usually wear for a t shirt, you want it to fit a bit tight on your body. I usually just wear the vest and some shorts when I ride. Call me a squid I guess if you want.

    The problem with summer heat and my Harley Davidson Ultra Ltd is the bike you are wearing probably gives you plenty of air flowing through. On my big touring bike I get virtually no air flow. Just like sitting at a traffic light. No air. Above is miserable with a mesh jacket. So to keep from going into the mad heat raged person you described I go without the jacket. 😎😎

    This summer it’s baking in TX and I’ve added cooling (wicking) sleeves under my summer riding jacking. Seems to help cooling but definitely holds some sweat in the pull on sleeve and not in my jacket sleeve. I was having to blow dry the inside of my jacket sleeves after every ride but now they stay dryer and I can rotate and wash the cooling sleeves much easier.

    Ride in Florida in July or August. I would like to have some level of protection but long pants and any kind of long sleeves and its a guarantee you will be heat exhausted before getting too far down the road. Cotton khakis and a light weight cotton shirt is almost too much. Good boots, and gloves are good any time but taking your helmet off to sweaty hair and oily hot face isn't fun. I understand out west it's dry and hot but in Florida riding to work would require a bath at the office once you got there. It's all different here. But great in the fall when riding gear works.

  • @LarryAllenTonar
    @LarryAllenTonar 2 года назад

    But ... you're riding in Tucson. Phoenix where Prudential's cotton fields transpire H2O to the max? Back east, I've had rides where I just got hotter (and wetter) the longer I rode. Ice & air conditioned rooms with a fan absorb more heat! You might want to mention where to put ice packs next to near-surface large blood vessels.

  • @PasteteDoeniel

    Amazing video. I didn't want to sacrifice protection but the heat this summer in unbearable on a bike. Ended up buying a mesh jacket and will try that out.
