This time-lapse speed drawing of Scarlett Johansson demonstrates the technique I used to create a kind of vintage photographic look to it.
I first sketched the outline of Scarlett Johansson's face, hair and arms. I then used the coloured pencil to very lightly block in the dark areas while leaving the lighter areas alone. This gave me an exact map of where I need to airbrush the dark areas, this can be seen at the beginning of the video.
Once I have mapped out the dark areas with the coloured pencil I then use my airbrush to go over the areas. The airbrush allows for a fine gradient from light to dark. The reason I use a combination of airbrush and pencil is because when the two are combined it creates some nice depth and richness to the colours. What happens is two or three different colours are layered on top of each other. It acts almost like a glaze in painting, light travels through the layers of coloured pencil and is reflected back off the airbrushed layer below.
And so after I have finished the undertone with the airbrush I then go over it again with coloured pencil, this is where you start to notice this depth and richness appear in the colour of the drawing.

Spark Sight Thank you :-) In this piece I used airbrush, Coloured Pencil and Coloured Pastel Pencil. Also an erasure for highlights. I don’t use blending or burnishing Pencils and I don’t use them paper blending stump things. They are really nasty, I use pencils for all my blending. Also less is more!

super! giper realism! but, i thought you will do work with pencil, if you choose aerograph - what Scarlett doin on the paper?
James Nightstalker I use both pencil and airbrush on photo quality printing paper. It brings the colour out well and makes the airbrush underpainting very smooth. I'm still experimenting with different papers

Love the your work!!! However, I notice that when you use the color pencil you seem to use the brushes to blend it are you using a solution to help blend the pigment? I've been practicing with color pencils for a bit therefore I'm trying to learn new techniques. Thanks.
Thank you : ) I'm not actually using the brush to blend anything I'm just using it to wipe away bits of the erasure from the picture. I like to keep the picture clean throughout the drawing. No solution is used for blending just applying thin layers of airbrush and coloured pencil works well in my opinion.

I'm used to Adobe so I just use that and yeah the music is copyright. The title of the music is in the description of the video
The problem with oversized portrait work is you give the people on average a puffy look - my tip use a mirror and look at your work from a good distance to check proportions - and if you are using a projector to transfer the image you can make corrections with the software that helps from making balloon faces.

Hey thanks, it took roughly 50 hours but it was spread out over about 3 weeks.
Hey I'm super new to airbrushing, and I just wanted to ask, what paint/ink are you using? Because I swear you were erasing it in the video. Around 3:25 top middle.
O_SS_421 - That’s correct I was using an erasure an electric erasure. I use watercolour paint for the airbrush. I use the airbrush to create the soft undertones ready for when I use coloured pencils. If the paint is diluted enough it can be erased for highlights. If the paint is airbrushed on too thick and strong you won’t be able to erase the paint. Hope that helps

I have to know. Are the colored pencils you are using contain wax? If so, what paint are you using so there is no incompatibility with the pencil?
ron celano I use Faber-Castell-Polychromos coloured pencils which are oil based. I use watercolour paint with the airbrush for the undertones. I try not to lay the paint on too thick or the paper will lose it’s tooth for the pencils.

what brand / kind of paper was used for this portrait?
Sketchcat I use Cotton Rag 310gsm paper. It’s actually large rolls of printing paper but I find it works really well for pencil and airbrush. You can get deep blacks and vibrant colours with it.
