This is the most comprehensive channel for kayak information hands down. I just bought a kayak weeks ago but I’m so intrigued by all the other kayaks out there cuz headwater makes it fun to learn about them
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Moken 12.5v2 was my first boat, I loved it but got tired of solo loading it into my roof rack since that's the only way I had to transport it.
Ended up upgrading to an Eddyline Sitka XT since it's a bit easier to transport. I do miss the stability of the moken on lazy days where I don't want to work as hard to stay upright
It’s nice to have a sit on top for kicking around. That’s one of the things I like about my Aquaglide Chelan. Light, easy and can just kick back and float.
Because of you I went w the Moken 12.5 v2. Have loved it. Just got it a couple weeks ago from your Alder Creek friends. They were great to work with.
I can testify to the Moken 12.5V2 👊 Easy paddle and nice fishing platform. The warranty is spot on and customer service is spot on. The Big Fish is a barge to paddle 🤪 . Traded mine for another Moken 😏. Thanks for the honest review Dan 😎
Thanks for the feedback. Glad your happy with the Moken.
I just added a bow mount trolling motor using the OneObjective Lure mounting plate on my Moken 12.5v2 and IMO it's the ultimate fishing kayak setup. I can cover water on big bodies of water with no worries or I can take it to the river for some skinny water adventures.
Great vid……choice is still hard. New to the concept but looking for estuary fishing so maybe the moken.
In Australia they are both around the 2000……makes me super jealous when I hear your prices. Thanks again, Greg
Last week I bought a Moken 12.5 V2 from Alder Creek in Oregon, based on your reviews earlier. I love it so far. Thank you for the help! I've already taken it on the Columbia 3 times. Can't wait to float the John Day like you guys did. :)
Right on! The guys at Alder Creek are fantastic!
I've started looking at Kayaks. The Hobie is very nice but a little pricey. You are showing me boats I can afford! Could you do a show on pedal drives? Or have you? I will check as well. Thank you! My only problem is finding the equivalent in Canada
I was super close to buying a moken 12.5 based on what I had seen on your channel. I ended up with a perception pescador pro 12, and the deciding factor was the weight because I'm gonna be by myself most of the time. Still really appreciate your reviews and info. I'll probably end up getting a 2nd boat down the line. Hopefully one aimed more toward paddling than fishing.
Thank you so much for adding a legroom piece to your reviews. I have a 37" inseam and find most kayaks lacking in legroom. Plus I only use the low seat position for the stability. As I am older (67 years old) I tend to look for boats under 90 pounds. I am a paddler that enjoys fishing. I don't think any of the three kayaks will do for me, but I will keep looking and checking out your reviews. One last thing, I do prefer NOT having a front hatch. I never use the in hull storage. Thanks for the reviews!!
You’d fit the big fish for sure
@@HeadwatersKayak I have looked at the Big Fish and liked it but found it too heavy and definitely not a paddler's kayak. But at least my legs fit in it. Still looking for a tough hard shell kayak that is may for long legged people. I only weigh 210 pounds so not concerned with weight capacity. Thanks for responding!!
P.S. Any chance on a review of sit on top kayaks for taller people?
@@josemirles4595 I'm 6'4 with a 34" inseam and just purchased a Jackson Bite Angler. The seat only has one height, about 7-8" off the deck, but can be adjust fore and aft. I think the advertised maximum legroom is a whopping 48"! Plus it comes in at under 80lbs. The Bite checked off a lot of boxes for me, and I've been happy with it so far. It doesn't have in-hull or console storage, but you mentioned that isn't important to you (it isn't to me either since I mostly fish stillwater or slow moving streams).
@@jeremydrouin9975 I will definitely have to look at that one. How does it paddle?
@@josemirles4595 Better than I expected for being 35" wide. However, my previous kayak was a 13ft inflatable, so I don't have much to compare it to. There are a couple of really thorough Jackson Bite paddling reviews on RUclips from experienced kayak fishermen who can provide better perspective. Good luck with your selection. I did a lot of online research beforehand and paid attention to kayaks that were short on legroom. I really liked the Crescent kayaks, but heard from several owners that legroom was lacking a bit. Plus, no dealers in my area, so I couldn't sit in one before purchasing.
Almost bought the Feelfree when I was getting onto kayaking. Your many videos helped me out A LOT! BUT I didn't want something that was being made over seas and being shipped across the oceans, especially during the onset of Covid when nothing was getting through. I did go with the Jackson Bite FD with the optional motor package, which they did away with in the first year they were offing them so now I not that happy with Jackson either...I have friends who are looking to get into Kayaking and I will be showing them these options. Thanks for your tutelage!
Love the vids, big thank you for taking the time to make them! Question, do you think a 10 year old would be able to handle the Moken in a river with almost no rapids? Looking for something that I’ll enjoy paddling too, if he’s not with me, but also realizing it’s probably a deal that requires two boats.
It would be a gigantic boat for a 10 year old the handle. He would be way better served with a Moken 10 light
Hey, I'm looking for a new fishing kayak and I have a budget of about $800. I started with a used Pelican sentinel 100x and I found the seat to be uncomfortable, I couldn't stand in it, and I disliked the design. I mostly fish lakes and ponds but have gone out on rivers before. I'm relatively small at 5'7 145 so I don't feel like in the biggest kayak in the world. I have found that I don't like having the latch between my legs and one thing I would like to have is built in cupholders cause of a condition that requires me to consistently remember to drink water. The three kayaks that I have viewed online that interest me are the Lifetime Yukon 116, Pelican Catch Mode 116, and a bit more expensive the Perception Sports Outlaw 11.5.
Would you recommend one of these over the other or go a completely different route all together?
Thanks to anyone who comments!
Hey Dan great review as ALWAYS! I've been waiting for your on water review of the Lifetime Yukon. You said a while ago you were going to do one. I like the Moken 12, but I can get the Yukon for 1/2 the price and I can get it local. I've been waiting to here your thoughts before I got it. I know it's probably nowhere near the quality of the Moken, but it will be my first kayak and I don't want to over spend. I will use it for mostly fishing. Thanks for the help.
I don’t have access to one at the moment, so that review will have to wait a bit
Hard to beat the wheel in the keel
Truth! 👌
Just sold my pelican catch 100. Want to upgrade. Would really like 1 that can be motorized later on. Looking at the pelican pwr, and or big fish 105. Outlaw I heard alot of ppl like. I don't like that it doesn't adjust foot rest. To power threw you're paddle strokes. Since u need you legs to engage ur core etc for a powerful stride. Other 1 I was looking at is the jackson bite. (Loveee the amount of space. Nice and wide) so I'm torn.. what else would you recommend. Altho none of these kayaks are light 😪😪😪 looking for a roof topper
Thought the Falcon 11 would've been in here, great video
It totally should be. I just haven’t been able to get my hands on one.
Completely irrelevant to this video, but I bought a CK1 today bc of your video on it lol. Still on the hunt for an LT too!
Thank you!!
Hi, would you recommend a Crescent Crew or Moken 12.5 for a larger person who want to fish occasionally but also wants a good paddling kayak? I am looking for something with an open bow so I can take my dog and him up front.
I know this is an older video. I just borrowed a kayak from a friend to go on a trip. Ow I’m hooked. I’m just curious is there a pedal system for the moken 12.5 that can be added on?
No but they have a Moken 12.5 with pedals now.
@@HeadwatersKayak yeah i did some more digging and found them. I appreciate you getting back to me. I really enjoy your content.
How is Stability between the moken 10 V2. Which i own and the moken 12.5?? I am wanting another moken and considering the 12.5. I love my moken 10 its plenty stable
Similar, the Moken 12.5 just paddles easier.
Have you had much experience with the vanhunk kayaks like the black bass 13? They seem to have alot of options for a really cheap price which makes me wonder about quality.
It’s just another Chinese knock off company. Not impressed whatsoever.
Can you safely do class 2 rapids with these? I fish some waters that are rocky and a little rough in places.... is class 3 out of the question?
Class 2 sure anything more and you need a more specific kayak
Thanks Dan! I just bought 2 Moken 12.5’s from Headwaters Adventure. Haven’t picked them up yet. What paddles do you recommend?
240cm and lighter is better.
@@HeadwatersKayak ,any certain brand? I hate to bother you. But, I love your videos and you know what your talking about😊
@@traciminer6750 get a bending branches angler classic plus. Adjusts 240-255. 240cm low seat position, 255 high.
@@TheGoochinator1 , thank you😊
Still consider the Nucanoe Flint to be worthwhile River Fishing option?
There are better kayaks out now for the $$
@@HeadwatersKayak anything around the 60-65lb mark, that paddles well and is fairly open, but fishable?
@@jboulderct I got a perception pescador pro 12 at 64lbs. The weight was the deciding factor for me as well. I was wanting a moken 12.5, but being by myself I decided to go with the lighter pescador.
what would you choose between the big fish and the moken? going to be doing alot of river fishing and camping in texas?
Moken is my favorite out of the three.
@@HeadwatersKayak thanks for the feedback! Any opinion on the perception outlaw 11.5?
Hey Dan! Got a change to chat with a few weeks ago at the Redding Shop. Always love the info this channel. In your opinion would the Lure or the moken be better to transition from cruising at Whiskeytown to Running down the Sac river? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for such a great channel!!!! 🤙
The Mokens Better Paddlin. The lure would work in either area but would just be slower in flat water
@@HeadwatersKayak OK! Thank you for the info Dan! Greatly Appreciated!!
You should do a review of some of the better pelican sit in kayaks
I’d love too.
Do you carry all three of these boats in your Lodi shop?
How would these 3 kayaks work to float the Boise river?
Dunno. I’ve never floated it.
I have a question for you. I am 6' 1" and and around 270ish. Between these three kayaks in this video and the Bonafide RS117. Which one of the four would you say is the most stable please? In the next few week's I want to buy my first kayak. I don't really care about pedal kayaks unless the price is right. Thank you.
117 is similar to the Seastream in stability.
@@HeadwatersKayakglad I came across this video and comment. I always ask for comparisons to the rs117 cuz it the only real kayak I have experience with. This is good. The seastream is one ive been lookong at. Especially the peddle version.
What's the the rule for percentage of capacity that paddler and equipment should be less than?
2/3 of total capacity is a general rule.
At 6ft, 265 lbs, the moken 12.5 would be ok I think?
I have had good luck with the Native Falcon 11. very good bang for your buck fishing kayak.
I agree it’s a solid little kayak for the $$
Have you ever reviewed the Riot Edge 11 kayak?
No
@@HeadwatersKayak would you like too?
Hard to find these kayaks in the mid atlantic.
Hmm strange.
I know this is off topic I have a big 120 and love it but can anyone tell me if the old town sportsmen 120 pdl is as stable as the big fish 120, I'm looking to get into a pdl and stability means the most to me more than anything else
I’m here at a show with Oldtown. I’ll check them out.
@@HeadwatersKayak Ok thanks a bunch
