    Such a weak rim indeed ! just one layer ? are you kidding ? and all the part are just glued together ???? you need to better think the lapping method in order to orientate the fiber with the direction of the stress (in a radial way). Then you have to add some reinforcement carbon rod/strip in it. And please, make it in one piece !!

      Seems to be a rim for the eco-marathon Shell (fuel consume car challenge) so the speed will not exceed 50 km/h with an extremly light car... I think there will not be many stress applied on the rims during the run. But I was a little disappointed too at the first time.

    You can just put the vacuum tape on your mold and lay vacuum plastic overtop, it uses less of it and is a bit easier to do, when gluing the parts together you could put a vacuum overtop for better weight distribution and better adhesion, also scuff the edges that will be touching each other as it adds significantly more surface area therefore a much tighter bond, i would heavily suggest adding a valve to your epoxy feed line, that way its easier to get the tube in without sucking a bunch of air, it also allows you to slow down the epoxy filling the mold, ive heard it helps with rigidity and air evacuation, finally why not add spokes? Seems like they would cut down on weight a bit

    Was needing a way to make wheels for a reverse trike project I'm working on, this might work. I need a wheel that is very off-set to one side so that i can get the steering knuckle up inside the wheel. Also considering using carbon fiber for the body and frame with front and rear mounted subframes.

      Hi Mark! I have made also wheels with that high off-set, and the knuckle is located directly above the tyre center line.

    Does cutting the CF sheets on applying decrease the overall strength of the part, as compared to using single sheets ? Are parts made this way reliable for practical purposes where strength is a concern, such as rims itself ?

    I like the vacuum infused resin trick, I haven't seen it before. I checked your website and noticed that it left dry spots, did you guys get it worked out or switch to the traditional resin application?
    I also saw that the wheel cracked at the epoxied seam, have you switched to a stronger epoxy? Or did you try overlapping the material instead of butting it together?

    • @RemmiTeam
      @RemmiTeam  7 лет назад +1

      The small dry spots were caused by the spray glue that did not dissolve into the resin as it should have. And the epoxied seam did indeed crack, this structure was later designed completely different due to these problems.

    Those seems are a massive weak point why didn't you over lap them with more fibre. even just a strip would have been better than a butt joint.

    • @RemmiTeam
      @RemmiTeam  8 лет назад +6

      +gus bisbal Do you mean the sidewalls? On the sides there is 3 layers of fabric which are laid on each other so that the seams are always in different place.

    • @leocurious9919
      @leocurious9919 8 лет назад +2

      +gus bisbal Exactly my thought. Why bother with carbon if u just have some glue holding everything together anyway?

    • @RemmiTeam
      @RemmiTeam  8 лет назад +7

      +Leo Curious the parts were glued together by epoxy glue. These glues are extremely strong and they are commonly used in composite industries to bond parts together. This for sure is not the weak point of the structure.

    • @thomaslarang5251
      @thomaslarang5251 8 лет назад +4

      I am pretty sure that Gus and Leo are right. Butt joints are a major weak point, and epoxy in itself is very brittle. You really need to join those seems with another layer of carbon fiber on top, or make it out of a single piece of CF.
      Do a simple test with two epoxy infused rectangular pieces of carbon fiber, and you will see that it will break at the butt-joint every time.

    can you please give me a brief about how much of the epoxy was used for design i.e. weight ?
    also i wanted to know what will happen if i put the carbon sheets in different orientations , will it effect the structure strength ? for example if i am taking a 3k twill weave sheet and putting the sheet at 0 degree orientation and the second layer at 45 degrees and next one at 90 degress ?
    and how to decide how much resin i have to apply on each layer ?

    • @2awesome292
      @2awesome292 7 лет назад

      Typically you use 60% carbon fibre to 40% resin but it can vary depending on application I suppose.

    • @RemmiTeam
      @RemmiTeam  7 лет назад +1

      When making parts with this technique(resin infusion) you usually achieve fiber/resin content of 60/40. You always have to make sure to wet all your fibers, but in general the less resin the stronger part. Carbon fiber is very strong along the direction of the fibers so if you have loadings from multiple direction you will need to orientate your fiber parallel to the force vector. This is just very general information and in real it's far more complicated.

    Hey, I'm curious about something. Is this CF-epoxy good for making aero-modelling parts? especially wing part. I know there's so many kind of CF out there. 1K, 2K, 3K, etc. But in this video, which ones you use to make that part?

    • @RemmiTeam
      @RemmiTeam  7 лет назад +1

      It is indeed excellent material for aero-modelling parts. There are so many techniques on how to make them and you should search for forums how people make them. On youtube I've seen many videos of making fuselages and wings. The 1K,2K.. number represents the number of fibers in one single tow of the actual cloth. You should be more interested of the weight of the fabric. One that I used was 200g/m^2.

    is that a bicycle rim?

    • @derickhostetler7318
      @derickhostetler7318 6 лет назад

      Sort of, it's for a prototype 1 seater car used in the shell eco marathon. At least I'm assuming that's what they are using it for since their car is right next to it the whole time and CF wheels would be a great improvement to normal aluminum ones. They are usually 3 wheeled and you need to keep them as light as possible

    • @-Sean_

      I think by degassing they meant pulling out the air bubbles.

    • @mlinecomposites1
      @mlinecomposites1 5 лет назад

      Rohan Jere and the reason for bonding the pieces together is easier than making the rim in one piece. This infusion layup system is one of the least expensive processes than prepreg setup. The rims could not be made in one piece, well they could, you just couldn’t get layup materials out of the inner part of the wheel upon completion

    • @djrowe007

    • @radihaydos95

      John Waldron, the rim is the part that holds the tire on.
      If you ever look at the construction of a bike wheel you'll notice they have 4 parts
      the hub
      the spokes
      the rim
      and the tyre (and tube, depending of tyre type)
      as they made the seat for the tyre, what they made is a rim
