In the Philippines, literally almost every singer is a powerhouse. Singing high and belting is the standard. If you're not a powerhouse, then people would not see you as a good vocalist. :(
Yes, they easily get impressed by that even though there are some noticeable flat notes. As long as you start belting your lungs out they'll consider you a good singer.
That’s how it is mostly in society. People have to really have an appreciation for music to get how beautiful softer and minimal voices really are. Anyone can scream or sing loud. It takes skill to sing soft and still communicate your message effectively.

Otherwise you’re fighting a losing uphill battle constantly trying to do something your body physically cannot handle. This is not even factoring in the fact that your voice changes with age. I think Ariana at the end also brings up a good point that could and should probably be made: No one has to be or I would even argue always is just 1 of those vocal types, mix and match, explore yourself and give yourself range as a performer. Remember to never limit yourself with these sort of guidelines because then you’re missing the point of the video entirely, he doesn’t want you to pick one of these and just go with it, but rather for you to be able to explore these vocal differences with more accuracy, no matter how many you associate yourself with. Great video all up, keep making content that feels genuine!
I find myself naturally in tune with singing softer similar to Billie. I can hit higher notes but I don't enjoy singing loudly or belting. I find singing softly gives me more control and I enjoy it much more. I always thought I needed to 'up' my level but this video shows that it's just my voice type. Thanks!
Same I used to feel this way to. I tried so hard for so long to be a powerhouse to the point of even straining my vocal chords each time I sang. It wasn’t up until I realised that I’m a soft singer. I found this out when I would sing songs to myself that I would think of - own lyrics/thoughts - that I could truly hear my own voice. If you ever listen to Brazilian bossa, that’s how I would categorise my voice
I tried to sing softly but I find that I sound 10x better when I project myself. being a powerhouse is so much work cuz then you'll always annoy people lmfao everyone really is talented in their own way and its cool that you can sing softly
that's opposite of me i love powerhouse before i even knew what powerhouse was listening to Bruno got me into singing and he's powerhouse!! and i was in awe with bey's vocals in single ladies that "oh oh oh" part and she's one of my vocal idols and she's powerhouse too like lmao 😂
This made me feel better about singing because people around me see being able to sing as having a powerhouse voice. I feel validated as someone who has a soft voice. Thank you 🥰
Of course. Don't let anyone or society dictate to you that you must have this huge crazy voice just to be a good singer. You can be the best with a soft, mild mannered vocal.
my problem is that my voice when speaking is fairly quiet and my personality is also mild and shy, but when singing my voice is very strong and powerful. and that sadly doesn’t really match my overall image.
Have you heard of Lawrence? Listen to a song of theirs called "Ain't about you" When I first heard the girls voice I was like whooooa she does not look like she sounds but when I kept listening to them I got used to it. People might get shocked at first but then they get used to it. So like... just sing 🤗
Jessica Sanchez ! She's a runner up in American Idol (idk what season lol). Her fellow contestants specifically said that she's very quiet and shy, but then goes her performing like a powerhouse in the show. Don't be down about it, use it to your advantage. The wow factor will definitely be off the roof 😉
@@shirleytatha8189 it did this to me when I first heard Perrie Edwards sing. She looks like she has the kind of very soft and high voice, but she actually has an extremely powerful and strong voice. You can use it to mind blow people with it!❤❤❤❤❤
I have a soft sweet singing voice. I used to think I couldn't sing because I didn't have powerful vocals like my cousin, but I later learned that we just have different styles. And that's okay! ^_^
I'm not good at singing. But sometimes i sing (when my parents isn't home), and i think i'm good at singing with soft voice, or high voice. I don't know why, but it just sounded better than when i sing with my normal kinda deep voice
Mariah is one of the most versatile singers of all time. The way she can flip from soft, but intricate runs to powerhouse belts and whistles to the lowest of lows is unbelievable. Not to mention her incredible songwriting and producing abilities... there's videos on RUclips of her songs stripped apart and you really get an idea of how many meaningful vocal layers she adds to her songs. Even her whistle register is used more so as an instrument rather than her just showing off. Everything has a purpose in her music.
You ever heard of Morissette Amon? She's a legit powerhouse but she can do these soft singing too. She's really versatile. Her cover of Mariah's Fly Like A Bird shows her soft and powerhouse style.
Some of my favorites. Powerhouse. Male. Steve Perry, Lou Gramm, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Klaus Meine, Mike Reno. Female: Adele, Celine, Lara Fabian, Whitney, Mariah, Morissette Amon. Great way to classify vocal quality! 😃
i come from a place where it's expected for everyone to have a powerhouse voice. this made me a bit more comfortable about not having it. i don't need a powerhouse voice to get my songs' messages through. sincerely, a minimal voice
Are you from any country in particular? Because I kind of have the same problem lol. In my country, people are known for belting and being powerhouses, but I’m just, not lol.
It’s hard for me to find my voice because, I feel like I’m able to sing in similar ranges from like: Beyoncè, Ariana to like deeper voices like Sza and H.E.R. It’s hard for me to find MY voice
That’s normal! I used to use Michael Jackson and sounded exactly like him in my first 2 albums. You WANT to use people as inspiration. That’s how it works. Find who you relate to the most vocally. Copy them. And then in time add your own style and own flare. it’s totally normal.
I can sing along to any genre but when I sing along to my own I have a hard time finding the melody/harmony. I feel like I’m stacked and I have range but I can’t really push it loud
Finding the melody is not the same as finding your range or voice. That has moreso to do with music theory as a melody is a series of notes in succession of each other. And a harmony is corresponding notes to another within a scale/chord.
Metal vocalist requires power. Aka: powerhouse. Just with grit. Also important to note these are not every type nor are they technically correct terms. They are how I refer to them asz
Thank you for posting this. I think I'll start singing in mininalist style because it suits my voice the best. I always wanted to do powerhouse or runs, but I'm not cut out for it. Never really knew about all these different tones until you pointed it out! Testing to see if you see this comment 1 year later 😂.
I’m a male, gotta a pretty deep voice and usually am relatively soft in my style, however my band and I recently discovered that my years of listening and practicing Muse songs led me to have a really well developed falsetto. It’s kinda become our thing now to go from these soft style lines down in the 2nd octave to really high pitched kinda powerhouse stuff up in the 5th/6th
I was about to say while I started to read your comment if you were hiding behind your voice . I used to do it but I was gon say try falsetto . I’m glad you’re here learning 💜
@@destinixshakur it’s weird reading my comment in hindsight, I had a surgery to remove a really bad blockage that was found in my nasal cavity, the doctors were shocked I could even breathe out of my nose at all. since then my voice has improved tremendously. Pretty much went from less then a 2 octave range when I write that to pushing 3 as of now. It was kind of a miracle that it improved my voice that much.
I'm definitely a powerhouse. My voice teacher has talked about me having a rly big strong voice and my biggest influences are Micheal Jackson and Bruno Mars(from listening to them all the time with my family lmao)
I’m the opposite, I’m female and I prefer singing lower than expected, but I am usually expected to sing like an octave higher than I like to. But, I’m also comfortable singing like A5, as well as F3
I'm a guy, and I really liked singing in falsetto, but when puberty hit me, I literally lost it and whenever I tried to do it, my voice cracks, and then turns into a shriek😂
I think mine is a bit of harry styles but without the rock and roll kind of sound. But last time I recorded myself I sounded HORRIBLE and I just don't know what to do
Came here from another video because it didn't give any audio examples *facepalm* I'm glad you gave specific examples to sing along with and find our style :)
To be fair it’s hard to give examples without getting a copyright claim and even though I still wasn’t able to escape getting claimed I felt it was far more important for people to hear what they should be listening for! 🤙🏾 thanks for giving me a watch
i used to be the soft voice but then i suddenly found that "chest voice" from me xd at first it sounded awful 'cause i couldnt control it at all but then i just practised and practised and now, after like a year or so, it actually sounds pretty good but sure i still have a lot to learn and improve
@@dany5622 yup...she does have a powerful voice in some of her songs not in context to higher notes but just feels powerful..btw i'm not a "Swiftie" But surely a fan. Im an Arianator actually..
No. It’s not. But thanks for your input. I make it very clear in both the video and the comment section as you can clearly see right above the comment you wrote NOT to categorize any people fit into many “categories”. None of the methods in this video are “bad habits”. Whatsoever. Singing softly, powerfully, with tasteful runs and riffs, or with stacked harmonies is not at all a bad habit. They are vocal expressions to implement in the song. As clearly communicated within the first few minutes of the video. Please watch again. Thanks.
Perfect. That’s how you start! All of us generally are inspired by another artists and so we mimic them to an extent. That’s totally fine. You only can learn your voice once you start to try new things, experiment with new sounds. So copy an artist you like, but then experiment with it and throw in your own flare. In time you will see what your voice truly is.
@@IAMLXGEND Thanks for the advice!! I really enjoyed this video, because I like how you appreciate different vocal styles. I took a couple voice classes but for me I didn't really like them because it was too focused on projection and being loud but even though I have a good range, I realize I'm definitely not suited for that kind of singing.
This was very helpful as I already try to mimic multiple styles for fun but to get a clear idea of the differences and make sense of what I can handle will be great.. plus I found a couple new artists lol
When you were talking about minimalistic voices I was thinking “jhene aikos music is like this” and 5 seconds later you listed her as the female example 😂😂😂 this video is awesome
I think I have a soft voice, since I'm a contralto. It's really hard singing, at school whenever our teacher partners us up, my voice is always covered up by my partner's voice. But it kinda have an advantage for me, since I can express my emotions easily.
@@random-ish7980 high notes don’t cause you to run out of air. Doing high note shouldn’t mean you push air out faster or harder you have to learn to control that air or you will damage your cords.
@@joanbaczek2575 ok but can you classify my voice type tho ? I know for a fact I have a soft voice and can go higher but only when I'm singing a note that I want to have a brighter tone but cant hold it for long I think I can also manipulate my pitch to some extent of where I can change my voice to a very smoky, soft, & girly texture what am I ?
For like singing a song while the artist is singing I blend in perfectly but if I sing by myself it's kinda crappy lol, reason being I tend to sing In my nose and I talk low so I'm not use to loud singing cause I like to sing when there are other sounds in the background. However, sometimes I can change how I sing in my nose but most times I sing in my nose. Majority of ppl who sing will find singing in your nose irritating but most times I dont mind. Btw you got any tips for my sing in my nose thing? Would really appreciate it😅
I’m not to sure but if you do sing through your nose you can try to hold you nose while singing, and try breathing with your diaphragm (this is what I did when I sing through my nose)
I think I either have a soft/minimal style. Can I have both? It’s not that I sing naturally soft, I can sing a bit loud I guess, but my voice always just sounds better softer. Plus, I’m an alto, and all my high notes are in falsetto. I also can’t belt, or do any riffs and runs, so, is it possible to be both?
I’m having trouble accepting my voice it’s very androgynous & jazzy! It’s very soft and chill but my vocal teacher told me that I have a good vibrato and pitch. I definitely needed this video! 😩
You’re welcome. Accept it! The moment you do, the moment you can really begin to use your strengths to your benefit and carve out a unique style of your own.
I’m a 16 year old male and I would say On a scale from 1-10, 10 being powerhouse and 1 being a softy. I’m a 7.5 maybe 8. I can hit hard notes, but not all notes and they could be a cleaner note

Finally someone who gets it.
Me too or maybe I’m just to shy to sing louder?
that's opposite of me i love powerhouse before i even knew what powerhouse was listening to Bruno got me into singing and he's powerhouse!! and i was in awe with bey's vocals in single ladies that "oh oh oh" part and she's one of my vocal idols and she's powerhouse too like lmao 😂
Saaaame!!
I'm a powerhouse BUT try to be a soft voice so it ends up sounding like a dying cat :,)

For me, it's the opposite XD

Soo mee😂
I'm more of a soft voice but I wanna be a powerhouse so baddd TwT
This made me feel better about singing because people around me see being able to sing as having a powerhouse voice. I feel validated as someone who has a soft voice. Thank you 🥰
Of course. Don't let anyone or society dictate to you that you must have this huge crazy voice just to be a good singer. You can be the best with a soft, mild mannered vocal.
my problem is that my voice when speaking is fairly quiet and my personality is also mild and shy, but when singing my voice is very strong and powerful. and that sadly doesn’t really match my overall image.
wow me too it sucks a bit lol
Exploit that. Use it to your advantage. Its a wow factor. People think you're shy, then boom. Big voice. It'll work in your favor.
Omg same so I'm here to find out what is rly my natural singing voice 😌
It’s probably because of how you want to sound than the way to talk.
I feel like Mariah Carey is a stunt vocalist who records with stacks and can be minimalist a lot on her rnb songs, love her
Mariah is one of the most versatile singers of all time.

Yes. Many artists can do multiple styles.

When references the “soft” singing type, it would’ve been more appropriate to put Lana Del Rey
You ever heard of Morissette Amon? She's a legit powerhouse but she can do these soft singing too. She's really versatile.
Her cover of Mariah's Fly Like A Bird shows her soft and powerhouse style.
She is good buh I think Beyonce was the perfect example

It’s hard for me to find my voice because, I feel like I’m able to sing in similar ranges from like: Beyoncè, Ariana to like deeper voices like Sza and H.E.R. It’s hard for me to find MY voice
That’s normal! I used to use Michael Jackson and sounded exactly like him in my first 2 albums. You WANT to use people as inspiration. That’s how it works. Find who you relate to the most vocally. Copy them. And then in time add your own style and own flare. it’s totally normal.

3. Powerhouse
4. Stunt voice
5. Stacking harmonies
6. CoD players
Apex would’ve been better on the list.
Being a metal vocalist and having a more agressive vocal style: oh, I'm none of these... right.
Metal vocalist requires power. Aka: powerhouse. Just with grit. Also important to note these are not every type nor are they technically correct terms. They are how I refer to them asz

That’s why it’s so important to keep practicing and pushing limits. You never know when or where your growth will happen.

Taylor swift is literally like the queen of minimalist voice..isn't she?

yes she is. but she also does powerhouse depends on the song, especially in some of her songs in rep album.. i'm a certified swiftie by the way.

Yup, I immediately thought of her when he mentioned using a minimalist vocal approach while being a storyteller.
I am struggling to even find my singing voice and what vocal group i fit in
Whatever feels natural and doesn’t require you to strain is where your singing voice is.
No. Thanks.
Sometimes I see singers singing with both types , it’s honestly amazing to see such versatility even though it’s quite rare .
I'm trying to get a unique voice, but I always end up literally copying Melanie Martinez cause I love her so muchh lmaooo
looool me too, she has a beautiful voice!
I really enjoyed this video, because I like how you appreciate different vocal styles. really me too like I can sing but Its when I try to go too high I run out of air completely, can you classify my voice category
@@random-ish7980 high notes don’t cause you to run out of air. Doing high note shouldn’t mean you push air out faster or harder you have to learn to control that air or you will damage your cords.
